iPad shipments to double in Q3 fiscal 2011, analyst says

In Apple’s earnings report released on Wednesday, the firm noted that it shipped 4.69 million iPad units during the second quarter — down from the 7.33 million it shipped the quarter prior. Apple’s chief operating officer, Tim Cook, has said that the iPad sales suffered due to backlogs but that the firm is pleased with manufacturing and expects to build “very large number of iPads” this quarter. Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst with Concorde Securities, attributed last quarter’s decline to Apple’s transition from the first generation iPad to the iPad 2 and thinks that iPad shipments will do a full 180 during the third quarter. Kuo estimates that shipments of the iPad 2 will “[jump] over 100% sequentially” in Q3 as Apple introduces the device to store shelves in 13 new countries. If you’re wondering which hue — black or white — has sold better, the answer is white. 60% to 65% of the sales for Apple’s second generation tablet were white iPad 2 units, Kuo said. More →

Apple's Q2 iPad 2 sales may fall short of estimates

Apple's Q2 iPad 2 sales may fall short of estimates

Analyst Horace Dediu on Tuesday uncovered figures Apple provided in a recent legal complaint against Samsung that may give us a preview of iOS device performance in the second quarter of Apple’s fiscal 2011. Within Apple’s filing, the company states, “As of March 2011, more than 108 million iPhones had been sold worldwide.” It goes on to say, “By March 2011, Apple had sold over 60 million [iPod touch] units,” and, “By March 2011, Apple sold over 19 million iPads.” Dediu uses these figures along with knowledge of Apple’s previously reported sales numbers to estimate that the company may have sold a minimum of 18.1 million iPhones, 4.5 million iPod touch units and 4.2 million iPads in its fiscal second quarter. While these numbers are anything but scientific, the iPhone and iPod touch figures are in line with analyst estimates. Apple’s iPad numbers, however, are extremely low compared to analyst estimates for the quarter, which range from 6 to 8 million iPads. Dediu notes that despite the potential miss on iPad sales, Apple is still poised to beat The Street’s EPS consensus. iPad 2 shipments total 2.4-2.6 million units so far, report claims

iPad 2 shipments total 2.4-2.6 million units so far, report claims

Apple’s suppliers have shipped between 2.4 million and 2.6 million iPad 2 tablets to date, a new report claims. Citing sources at touch panel suppliers in Taiwan, industry watcher DigiTimes states that shipments of Apple’s iPad 2 have outpaced the original iPad. Apple is reportedly expected to take delivery of between 4 million and 4.3 million iPad 2 units each month between April and June, totaling over 12 million units for the second quarter. The iPad 2 has seen tremendous demand in the U.S. and globally, having sold out in nearly every retail location that made the tablet available. Lines continue to form as new inventory arrives at retail locations abroad, and strong sales have kept stock low at U.S. retailers as well. Shipping estimates for online orders placed on Apple’s website improved to 2-3 weeks last month but that is where they have remained ever since, suggesting supply still hasn’t caught up with demand. Apple’s iPad 2 launched on March 11th in the U.S., and we said in our review that it pushed Apple’s already huge lead in the tablet space even further. More →

Apple revamps online ordering system to disguise iPad 2 shipment figures

Apple revamps online ordering system to disguise iPad 2 shipment figures

Apple may have revamped its online ordering system in an effort to prevent close-watchers from trying to figure out just how many iPad 2 units have shipped, according to sources speaking to AppleInsider. When the original iPad launched, users from Investor VIllage AAPL Sanity Board were able to figure out the number of iPad sales by comparing the order numbers. This year, however, orders are shipping with a randomly generated number. That means that you can’t look at order numbers to get a ballpark figure of how many iPad 2 units have shipped. That sounds like a logical move for Apple, which probably wants to keep sales figures close to the vest until it can announce an official number on its own. Oddly, though, Apple has not yet released any numbers in relation to how many iPad 2 tablets it has shipped. Analysts have estimated that Apple may have sold 1 million iPad 2s during its opening weekend, but we figure Apple would have made an announcement by now if that was fact. In any case, most retailers sold out of the device immediately, and as of yesterday there were still lines at the 5th Avenue Apple Store in NYC. So one thing is for clear: there’s certainly a large consumer demand. Enough for one Apple spokesperson to claim sales were “amazing.
