Apple’s grip on tablet market said to be loosening as Android shipments tripled in Q4

Apple sold more iPads in the fourth calendar quarter than it has ever sold before in a single three-month period, but the 15.4 million tablets it managed to move weren’t enough to keep Google from gaining ground. iPhone 4S and iPad 2 jailbreak installed almost a million in three days

On Friday, the Chronic Dev Team and iPhone Dev Team joined forces and released “Absinthe A5,” an untethered jailbreak solution for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. The two groups released the download figures on Monday and revealed that almost 1 million people jailbroke their devices during Absinthe’s first three days of availability. Using Cydia, the alternative App Store that comes with the exploit, the team was able to track the exact number of downloads. Specifically, the jailbreak was performed on 491,325 iPhone 4S handsets, 308,967 iPad 2 tablets and 152,940 iPad 2s that had been previously jailbroken on iOS 4. Apple reports record Q1 blowout, biggest quarter ever with 37 million iPhones, 15.4 million iPad sold

Following a rare miss in the fourth quarter, Apple on Tuesday reported record earnings in the fiscal first quarter that crushed expectations. Wall Street’s consensus pointed to earnings of $10.06 per share on revenue of $39 billion, and Apple came in way above expectations with revenue of $46.33 and earnings of $13.87 per share. Following the record-breaking launch of Apple’s iPhone 4S, a number of analysts were expecting iPhone shipments to come in at 40 million units or more for the December quarter. The numbers are now in, and Apple managed to move 37 million iPhone handsets, which includes the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and the free-on-contract iPhone 3G. IPad shipments totaled 15.4 tablets million last quarter, and Apple also managed to ship 15.4 million iPods and 5.2 million Mac computers. Apple shipped 17.1 million iPhones, 11.1 million iPads, 6.62 million iPods and 4.89 million Macs in the fiscal fourth quarter and 16.24 million iPhones, 7.33 million iPads, 4.13 million Macs and 19.45 million iPods in the first quarter of fiscal 2011. Tablet and e-book ownership nearly doubled during holiday season

Pew Research conducted a pre-holiday survey among people age 16 and older between November 16th and December 21st, and two additional surveys of adults age 18 and older in January. The data found that during the holiday gift giving season, sales of tablets and eBook readers nearly doubled from 10% to 19%. In the same time frame, the number of Americans owning at least one of these devices jumped from 18% to 29%. More than 33% of those living in households earning more than $75,000 a year own a tablet, with almost a third of those with college educations or higher owning the device. The eReader data revealed that more woman own the devices than men and those with both a high level of education and income showed the highest percentage of ownership. More →

But there was a catch: the initial release of the new jailbreak tool, dubbed Absinthe, was only available for Mac computers. Owners of Windows machines will be happy to learn that the new jailbreaker resulting from the combined efforts of the iPhone Dev Team, the Chronic Dev Team and pod2g is now available for Windows. Absinthe 0.2 can be downloaded directly from the Greenpois0n website and applying the jailbreak is simple enough. Untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 now available

Following news earlier on Friday that an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 was almost ready for public release, anew tool has been made available for download. The new build makes use of pod2g’s “corona” exploit and is the result of combined efforts from the iPhone Dev Team, the Chronic Dev team and iOS hacker pod2g. The tool that enables iOS devices with A5 processors to be jailbroken has been dubbed “Absinthe A5,” and users need to load the Greenpois0n website on their devices in order to trigger the jailbreak. Users having problems loading the site in Safari should simply go into Settings and enable VPN — after about a minute, the device will reboot and the jailbreak will be applied. iPhone 4S users running iOS 5.0 and iOS 5.0.1 and iPad 2 owners running iOS 5.0.1 can download Absinthe for OS X via the read link below to apply. The uncharacteristically long wait iPhone 4S and iPad 2 owners have been forced to endure before their devices can be jailbroken is almost over. In a blog post early Friday morning, the iPhone Dev Team stated that an untethered jailbreak solution for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 is almost ready for a public release. The iOS hackers wrote that it has taken the combined efforts of pod2g, the Chronic Dev Team and their own group to develop the new jailbreak, and that all technical hurdles have now been overcome. The teams are now working on making the solution as bug-free as possible ahead of general release. Once available, the new jailbreak tool dubbed “corona” will support iPhone 4S handsets running iOS 5.0 and iOS 5.0.1 as well as iPad 2 tablets running iOS 5.0.1. iPad sales may approach 50 million in 2012

With Apple currently readying its next-generation iPad 3 tablet, new estimates suggest the company could sell nearly 50 million iPads this year. In a note to investors on Wednesday morning, Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu suggested that calendar 2012 iPad sales could come in at approximately 48 million units, and he calls that a conservative estimate. ”We believe this significant refresh will likely help drive higher iPad sales and help further differentiate from arguably the only real competitor in the market, Amazon’s Kindle Fire, and not to mention the myriad of Android offerings out there,” Wu wrote. “We are currently modeling 48 million iPad shipments for calendar 2012.” Apple is reportedly planning to unveil the iPad 3 in February with a faster quad-core processor, a new 2,048 by 1,536-pixel HD display and 4G LTE support. Multiple reports have also suggested that Apple will continue to sell an iPad 2 model at a reduced price following the iPad 3 launch.

On Monday, iOS hacker pod2g posted a video of a jailbroken iPhone 4S on his blog. The device is running iOS 5.0.1 and is able to reboot without connecting to a computer, also known as an “untethered” jailbreak. The hack was done by Chronic Dev Team member DHowett, with Pod2g indicating a release is coming soon. Apple’s next-generation iPad 3 receives an early hands-on preview?

When Apple announced the iPhone 4S, users were upset that the device featured the same design as the iPhone 4. Unfortunately, it looks like Apple will continue this trend, with the upcoming iPad 3 resembling the iPad 2, according to iLounge who received hands-on time with what they are claiming is the unannounced device. “From the back, you could walk past this new iPad on display and have no idea that anything had changed,” said iLounge Editor-in-Chief Jeremy Horwitz. The iPad 3′s body is roughly 1mm thicker than its predecessor and the rear camera has become noticeably larger, resembling the iPhone 4S’s much-improved rear camera, sans LED flash. The front of the device featured no noticeable changes, although iLounge is reporting that the next-generation iPad will feature improved image and camera quality. Horwitz cautions that the device he played with seems to be around six months old, and if we know anything about Apple, it’s that their plans can change at the drop of a hat.  More →

What would the Consumers Electronics Show be without Apple rumors overshadowing most of the announcements? iLounge‘s Jeremy Horwitz has taken to Twitter to break down some of the leaked iPad 3 information he’s hearing. First off, it’s being reported that in addition to the rear camera on the iPad 3 being on par with the iPhone 4 or even iPhone 4S camera, the front-facing camera will support HD FaceTime video chats. Because of the Retina Display and new components, Horwitz reiterates an earlier report that parts of the iPad 3 will be around 1mm thicker to accommodate the new components. Finally, the iPad 3 should launch starting at $499 around March, and it will would push the iPad 2 down to $399, possibly even $299 if Apple decides to sell an 8GB unit. More →
