Apple will reportedly drop iPad 2 from lineup after iPad mini launch

The end is near for Apple’s (AAPL) second-generation 9.7-inch iPad 2, according Evercore Partners analyst Rob Cihra. In a note to investors, Cihra said he believes Apple will streamline its product lineup and phase out the iPad 2 to make way for the iPad mini. Since the release of the new iPad, Apple has continued to sell the non-Retina display iPad 2 at a lower $399 price. Cihra notes that Apple could sell around 7 million iPad mini tablets by the end of December and 26 million total iPads during the holiday season.

Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet exploded onto the scene late last year. Despite only being available for a month and a half in the holiday quarter, Amazon shipped nearly 4 million Kindle Fires in its launch quarter to take 14% of the global tablet market according to market research firm IHS iSuppli. While many touted the tablet as the iPad’s biggest competitor, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook insisted that Amazon’s tablet had absolutely no impact on iPad sales. Now, in the first quarter of 2012 it looks like the tablet that was once said to be Apple’s biggest tablet threat may have seen drastically reduced demand following Apple’s move to drop its pricing on the previous-generation iPad 2 to $399. Apple releases iOS 5.1.1 for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

Apple has just released a new version of iOS for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Listed changes are as follows:

This update contains improvements and bug fixes, including:

• Improves reliability of using HDR option for photos taken using the Lock Screen shortcut
• Addresses bugs that could prevent the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks
• Fixes bugs that affected AirPlay video playback in some circumstances
• Improved reliability for syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List
• Fixes an issue where ‘Unable to purchase’ alert could be displayed after successful purchase

The new iOS build is available for download as an over-the-air update for users with iOS 5.0 or later installed on their devices, or it can be downloaded and installed using iTunes. iOS 5.1.1 is compatible with the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, new iPad, iPad 2, iPad and third- and fourth-generation iPod touch devices.

Unannounced hardware tweak gives new iPad 2 longer battery life

iPad 2 features longer battery life from 32nm processor

When Apple unveiled its third-generation iPad in March, the company also announced that the iPad 2 would remain on the market at a reduced price. The Cupertino-based company did not reveal that the year old tablet had a significant upgrade to its internal hardware,however. The original 16GB Wi-Fi only iPad 2 featured a 45nm A5 processor, but the $399 iPad 2 is equipped with a smaller and more power efficient 32nm A5 processor, according to AnandTech. Performance remains the same on both devices, but the smaller processor delivers an overall increase of 16% to battery life while web browsing and a 30% increase when playing games. There is no way to tell whether an iPad 2 features the new smaller processor without opening the box and running a benchmark test, unfortunately, because the external packaging and the device itself look identical to the older model. 24% of Americans surveyed plan to buy the new iPad within the next three months

Baird Equity Research last week surveyed 488 “younger, tech-savvier” individuals on their interest in Apple’s new iPad, Fortune reported on Monday. Among current iPad owners, 48% were interested in purchasing the new iPad, with 35% of those already owning an iPad 2. The survey also found that 29% of international respondents were looking to buy Apple’s latest tablet, compared to 24% of surveyed U.S. citizens. Among new buyers, 42% of those planning to purchase the tablet have never owned one before. 15% of U.S. respondents said that they were likely to purchase the discounted iPad 2, while 28% suggested that they would purchase an iPad instead of a laptop. The top reasons to buy Apple’s latest tablet were its Retina Display, the A5X processor and LTE, although users cited high prices as the main reason to hold off on purchasing the device. More →

Apple’s new iPad has already seen massive success, selling over 3 million units in less than four days of availability. The tablet features an updated A5X chip, a beautiful Retina display and 4G LTE connectivity. Due to the blazing fast 4G speeds on Apple’s iPad Wi-Fi + 4G models, it is estimated that half of all new iPads sold will be LTE enabled. Analytics firm Localytics has countered previous reports, however, stating that only 6% of all iPad sessions using apps with its tracking software installed connect to the Internet through a cellular network. The firm found that 89.7% of all iPads are Wi-Fi only, while 8.8% were 3G-enabled and 1.5% included 4G. Users with iPads equipped with 3G use cellular data 45% of the time, while users with 4G devices only utilize LTE 36% of the time. Apple could sell 12 million new iPads this quarter, analyst says

Apple announced on Monday that the company had sold a record 3 million new iPads since Friday’s launch. With Apple’s new tablet set to become available in 24 additional countries starting at 8:00 a.m on Friday, March 23rd, a number of analysts are expecting solid sales to continue. UBS analyst Maynard Um believes that Apple could move 12 million new units in this quarter alone, AllThingsD reported on Tuesday. “Apple has sold ~750,000 new iPads per day since launch on Friday,” Um said in a note to clients. “If there are no supply shortages, this would imply a run rate of ~12 million new iPads between launch and the end of the quarter. We continue to believe there could be upside to our 12 million estimate for the quarter.” The analyst is referring to sales of the new iPad only, however, meaning the Cupertino-based company could sell more than 12 million units including the iPad 2, which is now available for $399. BGR reviewed Apple’s third-generation iPad earlier this week, and we said the new model was better than the iPad 2 in almost every way. As it turns out, there is indeed at least one area where Apple’s previous-generation iPad outshines the new tablet — albeit by a slim margin — and third-party consumer electronics warranty provider SquareTrade recently took to the streets to prove it. In an effort to illustrate why its warranty services can come in handy, the company performed a series of drop tests to determine which tablet is sturdier. The iPad 2 and new iPad each survived the first drop from waist height with the displays facing upward, but that was as far as they got. A waist-high drop of the iPad 2 with the screen facing down cracked the top corner of the glass face, and a drop from shoulder height finished the job. The new iPad, on the other hand, saw more than half of its screen shattered from a waist height drop with the display facing down. The subsequent drop from shoulder height left the tablet looking like it was run over by a truck. The moral of the story: don’t drop your iPad. SquareTrade’s video follows below. More →

Apple’s iPhone 4S cleared of infringement claims in the Netherlands

A Dutch judge on Wednesday ruled that the iPhone 4S does not infringe Samsung’s patents, Dutch website Tweakers reported. The Hague court has not yet ruled whether Apple’s earlier models and iPad 2 tablet infringe the vendor’s patents due to different implementations of 3G technology that may be protected. Samsung accused Apple’s iPhone 4S of infringing its industry essential 3G patent, although Qualcomm already licensed the technology for the chip, which is found within Apple’s handset. Apple’s earlier devices, however, use 3G chips supplied by Intel subsidiary Infineon, which reportedly never licensed the technology from Samsung. The court also ruled that, because of Apple’s negotiation efforts, the Cupertino-based company’s products can remain on sale in the Netherlands throughout the remainder of the trial. More →

In a special January event at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, Apple’s VP of marketing Phil Schiller announced that the Cupertino-based company was looking to change the textbook industry with iBooks 2 and iBooks Author. McGraw Hill Education believes that the new iPad, which was announced on March 7th, will truly revolutionize education. According to Vineet Madan, McGraw Hill’s vice president of new ventures, the discounted iPad 2 will now allow more schools to deploy iPads to their students for education. “I’ve long thought that the tipping-point price for a tablet is between $200 and $300,” Madan said in an interview with TPM. “Now that the entry-level iPad 2 has dropped by $100, and it’s now $399 for a 16 gigabyte version, we’ll see much more uptake. DOJ threatens Apple with antitrust suit over eBook price-fixing

The United States Department of Justice has warned Apple and five top U.S. book publishers that it plans to file an antitrust lawsuit against them, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday evening. According to the paper’s multiple unnamed sources, the DOJ alleges that Apple colluded with publishers to raise the prices of eBooks sold through Apple’s iBooks store. Apple’s iOS 5.1 update is now available for download

Apple announced during its press conference on Wednesday that the latest version of its mobile operating system would become available for download later in the day. iOS 5.1 has now been released for the iPad 2, iPad, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and second and third-generation iPod touch handhelds, and the new iOS build brings Japanese language support for Siri along with a number of additional updates. And ridiculous though it may be, AT&T iPhone owners will now see “4G” in place of 3G next to their signal bars while connected to HSPA. Samsung files a new lawsuit against Apple in South Korea

Samsung on Wednesday confirmed that it has filed another lawsuit against Apple in South Korea, according to a report from Reuters. Since last year, the two companies have been involved in heated legal battles throughout 10 different countries, racking up more than 30 separate complaints that have been filed. The newest lawsuit targets the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, and Samsung claims both devices infringe three of the company’s “utility” patents, which involve methods of displaying data, a device’s user interface and short text messages. Apple’s former CEO Steve Jobs vowed to destroy Android, and since then the Cupertino-based company has been involved in numerous patent disputes with Motorola, HTC and Samsung, the top three Android vendors in the world.
