Sprint on Tuesday confirmed that it has released an over-the-air security update for several HTC smartphones. In a statement posted to Sprint’s community forum by company spokesman Mark Elliot, Sprint said HTC smartphones including the HTC EVO 4G, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Shift 4G, HTC EVO Design 4G, HTC EVO View 4G and HTC Wildfire S will all begin receiving the update this evening. “Sprint worked closely with HTC after reports emerged of a potential issue that could allow malicious third-party apps to compromise data on Android devices made by HTC,” the statement said, noting that users of the aforementioned smartphone models should install the update promptly. Sprint’s full statement along with instructions on how to update HTC devices follows below. More →
Sprint released its latest 4G phone earlier this month and the launch price of $149.99 seemed surprisingly reasonable for a well-spec’d 4G smartphone with all the trimmings. As reasonable as that might be, the second smartphone in Sprint’s EVO line is now available from AmazonWireless for just $89.99 with a new two-year contract. The HTC EVO Shift 4G features a 3.6-inch 800 x 480-pixel touchscreen display, an 800MHz processor, a 5-megapixel camera with 720p HD video capture support, mobile hotspot capabilities and 4G WiMAX connectivity, as its moniker might indicate. It runs Android 2.2 Froyo and all in all, it’s definitely a solid option for Sprint subscribers seeking out a new smartphone. Then again, with Mobile World Congress less than a month away, it might be wise to hold off and see what new goodies Sprint has in store. More →
Gaming Google isn’t just for hard up magazine publishers anymore, as cell phone retailer Wirefly tries to milk as much search traffic as possible with its new “HTC Evo Shift Review.” Coinciding with Sprint’s announcement earlier this morning, Wirefly has issued a lengthy video showcasing the new EVO Shift 4G. Available on YouTube in full 1080p HD, the video does a good job of going over the EVO Shift’s hardware and software. It also shows the device next to the original EVO 4G and a Motorola DROID 2 for size comparisons, and displays the impressive results of a benchmark test. The video doesn’t offer much in the way of revelations considering the extensive leaks leading up to the Shift’s announcement, however, but it never hurts to enjoy nearly 10 solid minutes of new phone porn. We last heard from the HTC EVO Shift 4G / HTC Knight / HTC Speedy last week when it popped up in a new series of accessory shots. It was a safe bet that we would soon be seeing more of Sprint’s HTC Desire Z iteration, and the weekend provided two new tidbits. The first is a new image of the device — the first clear image where we can see its four-line QWERTY keypad. The image shows the phone sitting in a protective case that adds some bulk, however, but picture a shrunken EVO 4G with a sliding QWERTY and you’re good to go. The second piece of the puzzle that may have fallen into place over the weekend is a release date: January 9th. This is pretty close to the date we reported back in October — January 6th — and it falls in line with Sprint’s tendency to launch new devices on Sundays. Our date, which also happens to be the first day of CES next month, is likely when we’ll see this puppy announced.

An excited HTCPedia Shop just emailed us several times to show off a handful of new HTC Knight images it received from one of its suppliers. The HTC Knight — also known as the HTC Speedy, and rumors suggest it could launch as the HTC EVO Shift 4G — is a forthcoming Android smartphone for Sprint. Specs posted along with these newly leaked images jibe with our report from last month, suggesting the device will feature a 3.7-inch display, a slide-out QWERTY keypad and WiMAX connectivity. Our report also suggested the device will include an 8-megapixel camera, a 1GHz processor and the Android 2.2 OS, though hopefully HTC will soon have Sense running on Gingerbread and an update won’t be far off.
