We just elbowed our way through crowds, crawled on the ground under legs and ducked beneath cameras to bring you a look at the insanity that is Apple’s Grand Central Terminal Apple Store (grand) opening. The line to get in was wrapped deep inside and around the corridors of Grand Central Station, and there were hundreds of people gathered around the steps of the East Balcony entrance as well. Apple confirmed on its website Monday that its brand new 23,000-square-foot retail store in New York City’s Grand Central Terminal will open on Friday, December 9th at 10:00 a.m. The Apple Store will be located on the East Balcony of the train station’s main terminal. Unlike Apple’s 5th Avenue location, the Grand Central store will not be open 24 hours a day. It will close at 9:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday, 7:00 p.m. on Saturdays and 6:00 p.m. on Sundays. Despite initial reports that Apple’s deal with New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) had soured, Apple officially won approval to occupy the Grand Central Terminal space in July. Apple reportedly agreed to a 10-year contract with the MTA, during which it will pay $800,000 per year to occupy the space. We’re live outside the Apple Store on 5th Avenue in New York City where Apple has just unveiled the redesign of its iconic glass cube. This is easily one of the most recognizable Apple retail outlets in the world, and the new design makes it infinitely more elegant. There are now fewer glass panels than before and the redesign looks terrific in the morning light. A few store employees are standing outside making sure that nobody will “get fingerprints on the glass” before the grand opening. New Yorkers and commuters in the surrounding region troubled by the possibility of an even more chaotic Grand Central experience got some good news, as The Observer reports Apple’s Grand Central Terminal store is a no-go. According to a source close to the M.T.A., Apple was indeed in talks to open a 16,000 square-foot Apple Store location on the balconies of the main terminal in Grand Central, but the negotiations fell through. The report doesn’t detail exactly what happened to sour the deal, but it looks like Apple is back on the prowl as it searches for a new home for a monstrous new retail shop in New York City. More →
A new report claims Apple will build its largest Apple Store retail location to date within New York’s famous Grand Central Terminal. Apple blog Cult of Mac claims to have confirmed the news with a reliable source close to the company. The forthcoming store — appropriately dubbed Apple Store, Grand Central — will be announced in approximately one month and will likely open in early September of this year. “The company will certainly pull out all the stops on this one,” said the blog’s source. The Grand Central location is set to become Apple’s biggest retail store location, the report claims. It will win the title from Apple’s Covent Garden location in London, England, where Apple has 16,372 square feet of public retail space in its 40,000 square-foot location. Grand Central Terminal could quickly become Apple’s top retail store in the New York metropolitan area, with over 700,000 people passing through the commuter landmark each day. Apple will reportedly situate its new store right within the Grand Central terminal, as opposed to one of the 100 standard retail spaces found on the premises. The grand opening of Apple’s Grand Central store will reportedly coincide with a celebration of the company’s 10th retail anniversary. More →
