Apple Store at Grand Central Terminal a done deal

Apple has reached a deal with the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority to open a massive Apple Store in the main terminal at Grand Central. Several publications including the New York Post reported the deal over the weekend, which Apple has been negotiating since early this year. The 23,000-square-foot retail shop will be the largest Apple Store location to date, and it will occupy the space currently inhabited by renowned chef Charlie Palmer’s Metrazur restaurant. According to the terms of the deal as reported by the Post, Apple will pay $800,000 annually for the retail space during the length of the 10-year contract. Should Apple re-sign the lease in 2021, the rent will increase to more than $1 million each year. Charlie Palmer’s restaurant group paid just over $300,000 each year for the space, the report claims. The MTA’s financial committee is expected to green-light the deal on Monday, and then it will be reviewed Wednesday by the body’s board of directors. “[The deal with Apple] has the potential to bring a great new shopping destination to iconic Grand Central Terminal and significantly increase revenues for the MTA’s transportation system,” the MTA said in a statement. The MTA expects the deal to bring in at least $5 million in profit for the agency. More →

MTA expected to approve Grand Central Apple Store next week

MTA expected to approve Grand Central Apple Store next week

We’ve been hearing reports that Apple would open the world’s largest Apple Store on one of New York City’s Grand Central terminal balconies since February of this year. Despite a report in May that the plan had been nixed, the dream of a 15,000 square foot store could finally become a reality. According to The New York Times, The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) board is expected to approve Apple’s bid later this week during a monthly board meeting. Apple really knew how to woo the MTA, too: buried deep in the article was a discussion about how the iPhone maker submitted its bid for the spot in “linen-lined boxes, as if it were a wedding present to transit officials.” We expect to hear more on Apple’s plans in the coming weeks. Apple’s Grand Central Terminal store a no-go, report claims

New Yorkers and commuters in the surrounding region troubled by the possibility of an even more chaotic Grand Central experience got some good news, as The Observer reports Apple’s Grand Central Terminal store is a no-go. According to a source close to the M.T.A., Apple was indeed in talks to open a 16,000 square-foot Apple Store location on the balconies of the main terminal in Grand Central, but the negotiations fell through. The report doesn’t detail exactly what happened to sour the deal, but it looks like Apple is back on the prowl as it searches for a new home for a monstrous new retail shop in New York City. More →

World’s largest Apple Store coming to Grand Central Terminal

World’s largest Apple Store coming to Grand Central Terminal

A new report claims Apple will build its largest Apple Store retail location to date within New York’s famous Grand Central Terminal. Apple blog Cult of Mac claims to have confirmed the news with a reliable source close to the company. The forthcoming store — appropriately dubbed Apple Store, Grand Central — will be announced in approximately one month and will likely open in early September of this year. “The company will certainly pull out all the stops on this one,” said the blog’s source. The Grand Central location is set to become Apple’s biggest retail store location, the report claims. It will win the title from Apple’s Covent Garden location in London, England, where Apple has 16,372 square feet of public retail space in its 40,000 square-foot location. Grand Central Terminal could quickly become Apple’s top retail store in the New York metropolitan area, with over 700,000 people passing through the commuter landmark each day. Apple will reportedly situate its new store right within the Grand Central terminal, as opposed to one of the 100 standard retail spaces found on the premises. The grand opening of Apple’s Grand Central store will reportedly coincide with a celebration of the company’s 10th retail anniversary. Wave wasn’t the only Google service to be opened up to the public this week, as Google has now lifted its invite only restriction on its popular Google Voice service. It’s still only available to residents of the United States, but now the only thing standing between you and: free calls, free SMS messages (to anywhere in the U.S. and Canada), voice mail transcripts, and having one number for all of your phones is logging into voice.google.com with your Google account and picking out a number.
