Four-inch Samsung Galaxy S III ‘mini’ rumored for launch next week

Samsung Galaxy S III Mini Rumor

Intrigued by the Galaxy S III but are put off by its large 4.8-inch display? Don’t worry, it looks like Samsung (005930) has apparently got you covered. Unwired View got its hands on a flier in Germany teasing the launch of a Samsung product that’s billed as “something small [that] will be really big” and “a little sensation.” Unwired View notes that the flier prominently features “the S that Samsung has always used for its Galaxy S branded devices, so it’s going to be a Galaxy S that will get unveiled next week.” The smaller version of the Galaxy S III is rumored to have a four-inch display, making it roughly the same size as Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 5. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean ROM leaked for Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Galaxy S III Android 4.1

Samsung (005930) Galaxy S III users on Sprint (S) can now either wait for the carrier to officially release Android 4.1 Jelly Bean or grab the leaked ROM and install it themselves right now. Leaked on XDA-developers, the Android 4.1 ROM is the custom skinned version of Jelly Bean, meaning that it comes equipped with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. While the ROM does have all of the features that Google (GOOG) touted at its Google I/O conference, including Google Now and the speed-enhancing Project Butter, several XDA-developer forum members have reported issues with both the gyroscope and apps crashing. Keep in mind that installing this leaked build of Android on any Galaxy S III will void its warranty and could result in your phone getting bricked. But if you’re willing to tinker, you can download several builds of Jelly Bean for Sprint’s Galaxy S III here. More →

Because competing with Apple is way too easy, Samsung finds new rival in Facebook

As if the task of competing with Apple’s (AAPL) new iPhone 5 isn’t daunting enough, Samsung (005930) has chosen an interesting approach to promoting its flagship Galaxy S III smartphone in the U.S. that inadvertently brings a new rival into the mix: Facebook (FB). As dominant as Apple is in the mobile industry — the company accounted for 77% of all mobile industry profits last quarter — Facebook is equally in command of the social space. But nevertheless, Samsung’s recent promotional efforts in the U.S. take aim squarely at one of Facebook’s key features. More →

Major Galaxy S III vulnerability patched by Samsung, update now available

Galaxy S III Vulnerability Patch

Samsung (005930) on Wednesday confirmed it has issued an update that fixes a major security flaw in its flagship Galaxy S III smartphone.  The vulnerability, which was uncovered earlier this week, allowed a simple script included in the code on any webpage to remotely wipe the Galaxy S III, erasing all of its data and restoring it to factory settings. ”We would like to assure our customers that the recent security issue concerning the Galaxy S III has already been resolved through a software update,” a Samsung spokesperson said in a statement given to Engadget. “We recommend all Galaxy S III customers download the latest software update, which can be done quickly and easily via the Over-The-Air (OTA) service.” The security hole still affects other smartphones that include Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface and service layer, and reports suggest other Android smartphones may be vulnerable to the hack as well. Samsung Galaxy S III Jelly Bean update begins rolling out globally

Android upgrades are like Forrest Gump’s infamous box of chocolates: You never know what you’re going to get, when you’re going to get it, or even whether or not the box contains any chocolate at all. Nowhere is this more evident than in the long, fragmented upgrade process Samsung (005930) fans have witnessed with the Galaxy S III, which this week has finally been upgraded to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean… but only in Poland. iPhone 5 edges out Galaxy S III in display quality tests

iPhone 5 Galaxy S III Comparison

It’s pretty clear by now that Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 5 and Samsung’s (005930) Galaxy S III will be the two biggest smartphone launches in 2012, with each device selling tens of millions of units by the end of the year. But in terms of the devices’ displays, a new analysis from the image quality experts at DisplayMate shows that Apple still has the edge when it comes to developing clear smartphone displays that deliver the highest-quality images and videos. Samsung targets iPhone fans once again in new Apple attack ad [video]

Samsung iPhone 5 Attack Ad

“The next big thing is already here,” according to Samsung (005930). Following up its botched attempt to promote the Galaxy S III on Facebook and an iPhone 5 attack ad that ran earlier this week in newspapers, Samsung has released a new commercial that again takes aim at Apple (AAPL) fans willing to wait in line to purchase new Apple products. As iPhone fans tout trivial new features such as a relocated headphone jack and a cool new dock adapter, Galaxy S III users stroll by and show off functions such as NFC playlist sharing and Share Shot. Thankfully, Samsung left features like “Palm Touch Mute Pause” out of this new ad. Samsung expects Galaxy S III sales to top 30 million in 2012

Samsung Galaxy S III Sales 2012

In the second quarter this year, just two companies accounted for more than 100% of the smartphone industry’s profits according to estimates. Raymond James analyst Tavis McCourt recently said Apple (AAPL), which will unveil the all new iPhone 5 on Wednesday afternoon, took in 77.1% of second-quarter smartphone profits. Samsung (005930) accounted for 29% of Q2 profit among major global smartphone vendors. As the rest of the market continues to lose money, Samsung has yet another blockbuster hit on its hands — the company said on Wednesday that it expects to sell more than 30 million Galaxy S III smartphones before the year is over. Samsung Galaxy S III at last getting Jelly Bean update in October

Samsung Galaxy S III Jelly Bean

Samsung (005930) Galaxy S III owners will only have to wait one more month to get their device upgraded to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. CNET UK on Tuesday reported that Samsung’s premier smartphone will finally be getting Jelly Bean in October, months after it was first announced at Google I/O. Upgrading a big-name device such as the Galaxy S III should do wonders for Jelly Bean’s adoption rate, as Google (GOOG) says that less than 2% of all Android devices currently use the latest version of its operating system. The South Korea-based consumer electronics giant on Thursday announced that sales of the Galaxy S III smartphone topped 20 million in just 100 days, crushing the pace it set with its previous-generation flagship series — the Galaxy S II took about 10 months for sales to reach 20 million units. Apple’s iPhone 4S is no longer the top-selling smartphone in the U.S.

U.S. Smartphone Sales August 2012

For the first time since it launched, Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 4S is not the top-selling smartphone in the United States, according to channel checks performed by Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley. The Cupertino-based company is widely expected to announce its next-generation iPhone next week, leading a large number of consumers to delay their smartphone purchases until then. At the same time, Samsung (005930) is pushing its newly released Galaxy S III smartphone, which has become the best-selling device on three of the four major U.S. carriers. The iPhone 4S remained the top-selling smartphone on AT&T (T), although the Galaxy S III was able to outsell the handset at Verizon (VZ) and Sprint (S). More →

Apple goes for Samsung’s jugular, adds the Galaxy S III to its injunction hitlist

Apple Injunction Request

Even though Samsung (005930) wasn’t happy to get slapped with a $1 billion verdict in the recent Apple (AAPL) patent trial, the company could at least take some comfort that its top-selling products from this year weren’t part of the suit and weren’t likely to face potential sales bans. That may be about to change, however, as AppleInsider reports that Apple has added both the Samsung Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note to a separate complaint that it filed this past February that asserted eight utility patents against 17 different Samsung products.
