Apple agrees to drop patent claim against Samsung Galaxy S III mini

Apple (AAPL) asked the United States District Court for the Northern District of California last month to add several recently released Samsung products such as the Galaxy S III mini to its ongoing patent infringement suit. Reuters now reports that the company has agreed to drop the mid-range smartphone from the suit, however, after Samsung (005930) said it is not going to be sold in U.S. market. More →

Samsung Galaxy S III Mini Specs

Samsung (005930) on Thursday officially announced a compact and mid-range version of its flagship Galaxy S III smartphone. The Galaxy S III mini is equipped with a 4-inch Super AMOLED display with WVGA resolution and a pixel density of 233 ppi. The handset also includes a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, a 5-megapixel rear camera, NFC and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Unlike its bigger brother, the Galaxy S III mini doesn’t include 4G LTE connectivity and is a 3G-only device. Two trends are becoming more and more prevalent with Samsung’s (005930) smartphones as time moves on: They’re getting bigger and they’re getting more popular. Despite the success seen by “phablets” like the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S III, however, Samsung has seemingly acknowledged that some users prefer a flagship handset in a more manageable package. The company has now confirmed that it plans to launch a smaller Galaxy smartphone dubbed the Galaxy S III Mini, and the device will be unveiled during a press conference in Europe on Thursday, October 11th. ”We’ll unveil the 4 inch Galaxy S III Mini in Germany on October 11th,” a company spokesperson told Engadget. Earlier rumors suggested that the new handset will be much like the current Galaxy S III smartphone but it will feature a smaller 4-inch display, placing it in direct competition with Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 5.

Rumors of Samsung (005930) releasing a Galaxy S III “mini” with a four-inch screen just got a lot more real. A listing in a Nordic retailer has turned up revealing a “Galaxy S III Mini.” Hard specs weren’t revealed, but the database screenshot, if authentic, indicates that the S III Mini will come in blue and white and will not have any NFC. Other rumored specs BGR has heard include a the aforementioned 4-inch display with a WVGA display (800 x 480 resolution), 5-megapixel camera and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and a dual-core processor.
