Amazon could 'easily' sell 3-5 million Android tablets in Q4, analyst suggests

According to a report issued by Forrester Research on Monday, Amazon could “easily” sell between 3 and 5 million tablets during the fourth quarter of this year if it prices the tablet “significantly” below the iPad and can meet customer demand. “Thus far, Apple has faced many would-be competitors, but none have gained significant market share,” Forrester Research analyst Sarah Rotman Epps wrote. “Not only does Amazon have the potential to gain share quickly but its willingness to sell hardware at a loss, as it did with the Kindle, makes Amazon a nasty competitor.” The online retailer has yet to announce its tablet, but BGR exclusively reported that Amazon has two Android-powered models coming down the pipeline, including an entry-level dual-core “Coyote” tablet and an NVIDIA quad-core Kal-El-powered “Hollywood” slate. “If Amazon’s Android-based tablet sells in the millions, Android will suddenly appear much more attractive to developers who have taken a wait-and-see approach,” Epps added. According to a report issued on Friday, Amazon’s success could be driven by its effort to undercut the price of Apple’s iPad by “hundreds” of dollars. More →

Samsung may unveil upgraded Galaxy S II LTE next week

Samsung may unveil upgraded Galaxy S II LTE next week

The IFA trade show in Berlin kicks off on September 1st and Samsung has already made it known that it will have a big presence there. We’ve heard that it will announce the Samsung GALAXY Tab 7.7, the Wave 3, and the GALAXY Note but now Sammyhub suggests there could be more in store. Samsung could be preparing to take the wraps off of an upgraded GALAXY S II smartphone that could be the world’s first 4G LTE/WCDMA/GSM handset. The phone may also sport a faster 1.5GHz dual-core processor, an 8-megapixel camera, a 1,850 mAh battery and a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display. The rumor of NFC support definitely has us wondering if this will launch in the United States as the Android Ice Cream Sandwich-packing Nexus Prime, which is rumored to hit Verizon as a 4G LTE phone. Sprinkle lands in Android Market, will support NVIDIA quad-core processor

Sprinkle lands in Android Market, will support NVIDIA quad-core processor

Game publisher Mediocre officially released its new game “Sprinkle” on Thursday. Sprinkle currently runs on dual-core Tegra 2 devices but will be one of the first titles to support NVIDIA’s upcoming quad-core processor, currently codenamed “Kal-El.” We installed Sprinkle on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and, while it is definitely worth the $1.99 purchase price, we found it to be a pretty difficult puzzler. The idea is to use a large water spout to put out fires before they burn down the homes of the citizen’s you’re trying to save. You’ll need to lower or raise your spout and angle it correctly in an effort to douse the flames before you run out of water. There are a number of obstacles, such as large rocks, that make your fire fighting more difficult. The graphics are a bit mediocre, however, so we’re looking forward to the magic that Kal-El will add. If you plan on giving it a whirl, here’s a tip: to unlock all 46 levels just tap 5 fingers on the home screen. Sprinkle is currently available for $1.99 in the Android Market for Tegra 2 devices. Read on for a second image of the game. More →

LG Thrill 4G review

LG Thrill 4G review

The Thrill 4G is the second Android smartphone in the United States capable of recording and displaying 3D video and photos without the need for special glasses. We first saw the phone during CTIA earlier this year and, after delays, it will launch soon on AT&T for $99.99. I spent the better part of the last three weeks carrying the LG Thrill 4G everywhere I went. Are the 3D effects useful and fun or are they just a lame gimmick? Does the “4G” in its name equate to faster data speeds or does it surf on a par with 3G phones? All of this and more is answered in my review, so hit the read link to get started.

AT&T's HTC Holiday spotted on Craigslist with 1.2GHz dual-core processor

AT&T's HTC Holiday spotted on Craigslist with 1.2GHz dual-core processor

The crew over at XDA-Developers recently spotted the HTC Holiday (with a cracked screen) for sale on Craigslist. We first saw renders of the Holiday in May and the leaked images supposedly confirm a number of the phone’s specs. Bound for AT&T, the Holiday appears to be equipped with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a 4.5-inch 960 x 540-pixel display, 1GB of RAM, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, an 8-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread). It is unclear when AT&T plans to launch the Holiday but its spec sheet certainly has enough muscle to compete with Samsung’s inbound U.S. Galaxy S II handset, which will be announced during a press event on August 29th. Unfortunately, the XDA-Developers thread outing the device has already been pulled but you can hit the read link for another picture of the Holiday. More →

Fusion Garage unveils $499 Grid 10 tablet, $399 Grid 4 smartphone

After teasing a new tablet under the parody brand “TabCo” for the past several months, Fusion Garage took the wraps off of the Grid 10 tablet and a new Grid 4 smartphone on Monday. The Grid 10 offers a custom “GridOS” operating system, is equipped with a 10.1-inch 1366 x 768-pixel display and is powered by a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset presumably clocked at 1GHz. The GridOS supports Android applications as well, and users can purchase and download new apps from the “Grid Shop” or from Amazon’s App Store. In addition, GridOS has a unique home screen that allows users to create “clusters” of applications that span over an infinite amount of space. Fusion Garage also announced a GridOS-powered smartphone — the $399 Grid 4, which will ship in the fourth quarter — that will be powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The Grid 10 Wi-Fi tablet will launch on September 15th for $499, and a 3G-capable version will follow for $599. Amazon will carry the tablet and pre-orders are open now. Also of note, all existing JooJoo owners will receive a free Grid 10 in the coming months.

HTC Vigor could be first Beats by Dre phone

On Wednesday, HTC announced that it had invested $300 million in Beats by Dre, which will see its audio tech integrated into HTC phones moving forward. Now, rumor has it that HTC’s first smartphone to include Beats technology could be the Vigor, a device that is said to resemble the HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon. It could pack a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 16GB of storage, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera, a 2-megapixel forward-facing camera for video chats and a 4.3-inch display with a 1280 x 720-pixel resolution according to rumors, but nothing is confirmed for the time being. The Vigor will also supposedly run Android 2.3.4 with version 3.5 of HTC’s Sense user interface. It is still unclear when the Vigor will see the light of day, but its spec sheet definitely has us excited. More →

Production of Apple's next-gen A6 processor begins at TSMC; A6 devices to launch Q2 2012

Production of Apple's next-gen A6 processor begins at TSMC; A6 devices to launch Q2 2012

Trial production of Apple’s next-generation A6 mobile processor has begun, Taiwan Economic News reports. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has kicked off a test run of A6 chipsets — which could be 28-nanometer SoCs that feature dual or quad-cores and ARM-based architecture according to earlier reports — and Apple devices carrying the new chips are expected to be released in the second quarter next year at the earliest, according to multiple anonymous industry sources. Reports dating back to June suggested that Apple dumped Samsung following multiple patent disputes, and the company would instead utilize TSMC for production of its next-generation A6 processor. This new Taiwan Economic News report contradicts earlier rumors, however, which claimed that TSMC had begun its trial run of A6 chips last month. This could be a new test run, or earlier reports could have been misguided, of course. Taiwan-based TSMC is the world’s largest contract microchip manufacturer. More →

7-inch HP TouchPad Go leaked with 1.5GHz processor

HP’s TouchPad Go was recently approved by the the Federal Communications Commission, which revealed some information on the unannounced tablet. The webOS device could be equipped with a dual-core 1.5GHz processor and a 3G radio, which would indicate HP is looking to launch it with at least one U.S. carrier. We first heard word of a 7-inch TouchPad tablet in January of this year and the most recent rumors revealed that HP could launch the device this month. It is possible we’ll hear more about the TouchPad Go in the coming days, and we hope it gains more consumer traction than the original TouchPad, which just had its priced slash by $100 to make it more appealing.
