DROID 3, LG Revolution, and all of Verizon’s 4G LTE Hotspots to be discontinued in January, report claims

In 2011, carriers and manufacturers were releasing smartphones at such short intervals that within weeks, your once new and high-end device would most likely already be outdated. Unfortunately, it looks like things won’t be slowing down in 2012. After a mere six months on the market, Verizon Wireless has issued an end-of-life discontinuation for the Motorola DROID 3, The Verge reports. The article also claims that Verizon has issued EOL’s for the Blackberry Curve 3G, Palm Pre 2, LG Revolution and all of their 4G LTE Mi-Fi Hotspots. The carrier will soon be left with not a single LTE hotspot and a hole in its smartphone line up, however, we expect to see an array of new devices at the Consumer Electronics Show which kicks off January 10th. Sleek smartphones such as the HTC DROID Incredible 2, the Motorola DROID 3 and the Motorola DROID X2 are included, as are new 4G LTE phones like the Motorola DROID BIONIC and the Samsung DROID Charge 4G. A new 2-year contract must be signed with each purchase, and all devices include free 2-day shipping. More →

Motorola DROID 3 review

Motorola DROID 3 review

Motorola has been on a roll. With the introduction of the original DROID handset, a phone that we exclusively showed the world, Motorola has been set on a path of success with Android. The first Motorola DROID was innovative and brought forth a brand new version of Android, Android 2.0. The device featured a high resolution display with full QWERTY slide-out keyboard, and ran on Verizon Wireless’ solid voice and data network. Motorola and Verizon followed it up with an evolutionary upgrade in the DROID 2, but the Motorola DROID 3 is supposed to be the next big step in both hardware and software. I have been using a Motorola DROID 3 for over a week now, and my full review is after the break.

Motorola DROID 3 hands-on

By on July 14, 2011 at 12:28 PM.

Motorola DROID 3 hands-on

Verizon Wireless just shot us over its latest flagship DROID handset, the Motorola DROID 3, and it’s pretty intense. Specs-wise, it features a whopping 4-inch qHD display, a 1GHz dual-core processor, a fully redesigned slide-out QWERTY keyboard, an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video capture, global roaming capabilities, and it runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The device is thicker and heavier than we’d imagined, but that’s not to say it’s too chunky. It’s actually thinner than the DROID 2 and even the original DROID, though the bigger display certainly makes the overall footprint feel very large. Motorola’s qHD displays are PenTile displays, and unfortunately they all look pretty pixelated. Despite all those pixels, the DROID 3′s display is no exception, though it most likely won’t matter for the majority of consumers. The phone feels nice and solid, and the keyboard is incredibly spacious. In fact, the DROID 3 easily sports the best QWERTY of any of Verizon’s Android devices. Check out photos of the Motorola DROID 3 in our gallery below, and be on the look out for our full review soon!

Motorola DROID 3 now available from Verizon Wireless; $199.99 [updated]

Motorola DROID 3 now available from Verizon Wireless; $199.99 [updated]

Without as much as a peep from Verizon Wireless’ PR team, the nation’s top carrier on Thursday made the latest addition to its DROID line of smartphones available for purchase. Perhaps the silence is payback since Motorola announced the device last month in China before Verizon’s unveiling, which has historically preceded international versions of the phone. As we’ve known for quite some time, the Motorola DROID 3 features a dual-core 1GHz processor, a 4-inch qHD (960 x 540 pixels) touchscreen display, a full slide-out QWERTY keypad, an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video capture support, 16GB of storage and global roaming support, all atop Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. The phone is available from Verizon Wireless immediately for $199.99 on contract, and you’ll have to choose one of the carrier’s new tiered data plans along with it if you’re a new customer.

UPDATE: VZW finally decided to make the DROID 3 — you know, its brand new flagship Android smartphone — official. The carrier’s full press release can now be found after the break. Of note, the phone is available immediately online but won’t be in stores until July 14th. More →

Motorola DROID 3 spotted on Verizon’s website

Motorola DROID 3 spotted on Verizon’s website

We’ve already seen plenty of leaks and even a how-to video on Verizon’s upcoming Motorola DROID 3, but now full 360-degree images of the phone have been leaked. The images confirm what we’ve seen before: the DROID 3 will offer a similar design to the two DROID phones that came before it, including a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It will, however, get a hardware spec boost. We’ve heard the device will pack a 4-inch 960 x 540 qHD display, a dual-core processor, support for HDMI-out, and an 8-megapixel camera capable of recording HD video. The latest rumors suggest that the phone could be announced as soon as July 7th, but unfortunately it doesn’t look like support for Verizon’s 4G LTE network will be included. More →

Motorola DROID 3 could launch July 14th according to leak

Motorola DROID 3 could launch July 14th according to leak

Verizon Wireless could be preparing to launch the third version of its popular DROID smartphone on July 14th. Android enthusiast blog Droid Attic posted what it claims to be a screenshot of an internal Best Buy inventory system. The image clearly shows an in-stock date of July 13th for the DROID 3, and the blog notes that the phone should launch one day later on the 14th. Motorola’s DROID 3 is already official in China as the Milestone 3, so it’s clearly only a matter of time before Verizon makes an announcement. And if the July 14th launch date is accurate, that announcement will likely come some time next week. Spec highlights include a 4-inch qHD display, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video capture support, 16GB of internal storage and a slide-out QWERTY keypad. More →

Motorola unveils Milestone 3 (DROID 3) in China

Motorola unveils Milestone 3 (DROID 3) in China

This increasing number of leaks over the past few weeks were a dead giveaway that Motorola had a new flagship Android phone ready to be outed, and today the company took the wraps off its third-generation headlining act: the Milestone 3. Here in the U.S., we know the Milestones better as “DROIDs,” and we’re very confident that Motorola’s latest superphone will get Verizon Wireless CMO Marni Warden’s DROID stamp of approval soon enough. In the meantime, we get to sit half way around the world and admire this sleek smartphone from afar. Beneath the phone’s familiar facade lies a dual-core processor, a 4-inch qHD display, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video capture support, 16GB of internal storage and, of course, a slide-out QWERTY keypad. The Milestone 3 will launch in the third quarter in China, and availability elsewhere has not yet been announced. Motorola’s full press release follows below. More →

Motorola DROID 3 spotted again

Motorola DROID 3 spotted again

We’ve seen plenty of leaked shots of the DROID 3 (also known as the Milestone 3 in Europe), but now you can get a glimpse of the clearest one yet. The phone first surfaced in March, again in April, and then the specs were leaked in May. The bad news is that it’s becoming more and more clear that the phone will be nearly identical in looks to the DROID 2. The good news is there’s decent spec boost. The DROID 3 should sport a 4-inch display with 960 x 540 qHD resolution, a dual-core processor, HDMI-out, and an 8-megapixel camera that’s presumably capable of recording HD video. Early rumors suggested a June launch on Verizon Wireless, so hopefully we’ll hear more in the coming weeks. More →

Motorola DROID 3 how-to videos leak out

Just waiting for Motorola’s update to the extremely popular DROID lineup? The Motorola DROID 3, which we’ve seen leaked in bits here and there, has now been shown off in a pretty detailed way. Enthusiast blog PhonePads has posted 3 how-to videos featuring the Motorola DROID 3 and they look like corporate-produced videos. We’re sure we’ll see the Motorola DROID 3 get official sooner than later, but the question is, are you interested? Videos are after the break! More →

Verizon’s Motorola DROID 3 specs leak

Verizon’s Motorola DROID 3 specs leak

We’ve already seen a few images of Motorola’s unannounced DROID 3 smartphone — expected to hit Verizon Wireless in the near future — but now a few new specs have surfaced, too. According to TechnoBuffalo, the DROID 3 could launch in June and it will offer a 4-inch display with 960 x 540 qHD resolution, a dual-core processor, HDMI-out, and an 8-megapixel camera that’s presumably capable of recording HD video. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that Verizon will outfit the DROID 3 with support for its 4G LTE network, so it’s going to be more of an incremental update to a family that’s already starting to feel a bit stale. Shots of possible Motorola DROID 3 leaked

Shots of possible Motorola DROID 3 leaked

Is the image above the DROID 3? An OEM parts retailer named Global Redirects Parts seems to think so, but it also refers to the device as “Targa.” As we understand it, “Targa” is actually the name for Motorola’s DROID Bionic, due out later this summer, so it’s unclear if this is just a snafu on the retailer’s part. Still, the image does appear to be on a par with other DROID 3 leaked photos we’ve seen. There’s little we can tell from the image other than that the device has a front-facing camera on the top right of the phone, and that it seems to have a slightly larger screen than the DROID and DROID 2. Neither Motorola nor Verizon Wireless have confirmed the existence of this phone, so the DROID 3 remains pure speculation for now. Hit the jump for a few more images. More →

New images of Motorola’s DROID 3 surface

New images of Motorola’s DROID 3 surface

New images of Motorola’s DROID 3 smartphone have surfaced online, courtesy of Howard Forums. The device —which will be heading to Verizon Wireless — is seen exposing its QWERTY keyboard, complete with dedicated number keys. Since the numerals are no longer piggybacking on lettered keys, Motorola was able to provide easier access to more non-alphanumeric characters — the presence of the Euro (€), Pound (£), and Yen (¥) symbols are most notable. We also can see and HDMI-out port flanking the micro USB port on the device’s side. Hit the jump to see one additional image. More →
