Motorola DROID 2 unboxing / impressions

The original Motorola DROID practically saved Motorola’s wireless division (though we suppose you could argue Verizon deserves the same amount of credit, if not more). Following up on their superstar handset is the Motorola DROID 2 — couple refinements here, couple changes there. It’s nothing breathtaking, more like another option in the getting-very-crowded Android section on Verizon Wireless. Here are some first thoughts and our unboxing gallery follows:

  • The handset unfortunately feels a little bit cheaper than the original. It creaks along the sides a bit, and we’re not in love with the design identity of the phone. It’s almost like Motorola went backwards when trying to make the device have a bit more mass-market appeal with the chrome, blue color scheme, and now more rounded design — feels like their vision wasn’t carried all the way through.
  • The keyboard is slightly more pronounced now (the middle of each key is domed), but we have to say, it’s not the update we hoped it would be. Comparing it to the old, flat keyboard, we’re not sure what we’d pick. You can feel each key more on the new keyboard, but we’re not sure if that let’s you type any faster.
  • The screen is solid — seems identical to the original DROID.
  • Android 2.2 doesn’t really feel like Android 2.2 since it’s been BLUR’d and MOTO’d. We’d have loved this to be a stock Android 2.2 handset. This is basically a DROID X in a different form factor.
  • All in all seems solid, and a great product refresh, though we do wish that Motorola would have pushed the bar a tad bit higher.

Motorola's DROID R2-D2 Special Edition to be released September 30th

It looks like those images that surfaced of the Verizon Wireless DROID 2 R2-D2 Special Edition are the real deal. Android Central was sent an image of a Verizon R2-D2 promo poster — located at a Star Wars convention — that pictures the same exact device that was showcased yesterday, and the device is listed as “coming to your galaxy”  on September 30th. So there you have it. Thoughts? Any takers? More →

Is this the Motorola DROID 2 R2-D2 Special Edition?

Is this the Motorola DROID 2 R2-D2 Special Edition?

By the beard of Chewbacca, we hope this isn’t an actual image of the Motorola DROID R2-D2 special edition! The erroneous image above surfaced on Twitter and its publisher is claiming it is none other than the Motorola DROID 2 R2-D2 special edition due out from Verizon Wireless in September. While the camera, dual-LED flash, and micro-USB port all seem to match the location of the actual D2, we’re hoping someone with too much time on their hands got a hold of some spray paint and blue stickers. Do you think George Lucas would license out the R2-D2 name and allow it to be bastardized like this? We sure hope not.

Motorola DROID 2 user guide leaks, cases spotted

Man, how much longer can Motorola and Verizon Wireless try and keep the lid on the DROID 2? Earlier today, Droid-Life obtained a user guide for the yet-to-be-released DROID 2 as well as an image of DROID 2 cases on sale at Best Buy. The user guide reveals that the device will have Motorola’s UI enhancements — same as the DROID X — and will in all likelihood be launching with Android 2.2; as opposed to Android 2.1. We’ve heard August 3rd tossed around as a potential launch date (Verizon likes to launch handsets on Tuesdays). Come on Verizon, kick the flood gates open already! More →

Rumor: DROID 2 hitting on August 12th

DROID 2

Fresh out of the rumor oven, still warm. Engadget is reporting that the Motorola DROID 2 could launch on Verizon Wireless as soon as August 12th. The tech site quotes a “trusted source” who also detailed that the 12th could be some sort of “soft launch” — as a full DROID creepy commercial media blitz is not set to kick off until the 26th. There was also mention of a Star Wars special edition DROID 2 with a picture of R2-D2 on the back of the phone. If the report is accurate, August 12th is just 23 days away… who’s excited? More →
