Sprint’s HTC EVO 3D hands-on!

Sprint just announced the HTC EVO 3D, its latest 4G WiMAX smartphone with a 3D-spin, and we had some time to sit down to check out the device first-hand. In one word: Amazing. The EVO 3D’s 4.3-inch 3D display is incredible to look at while displaying 3D images and video. It reminds us of looking at a holographic trading card. We watched some user-submitted 3D YouTube videos on the phone, and a few jesters dancing around really popped off of the display. Similarly, the flowers in a bouquet that one woman was holding in an image seemed to jump off the screen — we actually reached out to touch them at one point! There’s a ton to discuss here, so hit the jump for more impressions on the EVO 3D, and don’t forget to check out our hands-on photo gallery.

T-Mobile LG G2x Android smartphone hands-on

We just met up with T-Mobile during CTIA Wireless 2011 to check out the brand-spanking new T-Mobile G2x by LG, an Android 2.2 (Froyo) smartphone that packs a punch. Seriously, this puppy insanely quick thanks to its dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor. In our hands, applications literally felt like they were opening and closing instantly. T-Mobile’s 4G network helps matters too, of course, and the BGR.com homepage loaded up in just a few seconds. Hit the jump for some more hands-on impressions of the G2x and don’t forget to check out our full gallery of photos.

Samsung announces Galaxy Tab 8.9 Android Honeycomb tablet

Samsung announces Galaxy Tab 8.9 Android Honeycomb tablet

Samsung wasn’t exactly coy about its plans to launch an 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab during CTIA this week, and that’s exactly what it just did. On Tuesday Samsung took the wraps off of the Galaxy Tab 8.9, its third Android-powered tablet. The Galaxy Tab 8.9 runs Android 3.0 Honeycomb, and features a mini-apps drawer for quickly launching your favorite applications. A future update will also bring Samsung’s custom UI to the slate. As its name implies, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 has an 8.9-inch screen with a 1280 x 600-pixel resolution. Despite being thin and light — it weighs just 470g and is 8.6mm thick — it packs some serious hardware muscle including a 1GHz dual-core processor and support for 802.11n Wi-Fi in both the 2GHz and 5GHz frequency bands. The 16GB Wi-Fi-only model of the Galaxy Tab 8.9 will retail for $469 and the 32GB version will cost $569 when the devices launch later this year. Hit the jump for the full release, and be sure to check out our hands-on. More →

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 Honeycomb tablet hands-on!

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 Honeycomb tablet hands-on!

We met up with Samsung during the CTIA Wireless trade show in Orlando to get up close and personal with the Galaxy Tab 8.9, Samsung’s new Android tablet that fills the space between its current 10-inch and 7-inch models. We certainly think Samsung hit the sweet spot with this one. The Galaxy Tab 8.9 is just 8.6mm thick, and it felt amazing — it’s much more sleek in the hand than the original chunkier 7-inch Galaxy Tab. Under its hood, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 has a 1GHz dual-core processor just like the 10-inch model. Demo devices weren’t powering up when we played with them, though, so we tested the Galaxy Tab 8.9′s fresh new user interface on a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and we definitely have some thoughts on the new UI to share. Hit the jump for more hands-on thoughts and don’t forget to check out our photo gallery.

Live from Samsung’s Mobile Unpacked event!

Good morning from Samsung’s CTIA 2011 Mobile Unpacked event. The company has not been shy about throwing its “78910″ event tagline around, so we think we know what we’re getting ourselves into.  We’re expecting to see a new, 8.9-inch, Galaxy Tab tablet officially welcomed into the Samsung portfolio. We’re also hoping to get a U.S. release date for the Galaxy Tab 10.1, which was announced last month at Mobile World Congress. Will there be any surprises? A new 7-inch Galaxy Tab? Galaxy S II Mini? Live from CTIA Wireless’ day 1 keynote!

While we’re not expecting to hear any product announcements at this particular keynote, the group on stage will definitely have plenty to talk about. T-Mobile Sidekick 4G hands-on!

T-Mobile Sidekick 4G hands-on!

As tech writers we get to play with a ton of phones, but nothing really takes us back to our high school days like playing with a Sidekick — and we just had a chance to sit down with the first one powered by Android. Built by Samsung, the Sidekick 4G features Android 2.2 (Froyo) and, despite our initial fears that it would be a lackluster device compared to the high-end beauties recently announced, we were pretty pleased with what the Sidekick 4G offers. It includes a horizontal-slider form factor, a throwback QWERTY keyboard with rounded keys, and more power under the hood than any Sidekick before it.  Hit the jump for our hands-on with the Sidekick 4G, and some initial impressions.

Verizon-branded Xperia Play rears its head at CTIA

Verizon-branded Xperia Play rears its head at CTIA

At a Verizon Wireless media event this evening, we happened to spot a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play handset showing off its freshly inked Verizon tattoo. The device — which was tipped for a Verizon launch by third-party retailer Wirefly back in February — is not new, but the Verizon branding and Gingerbread operating system definitely are worth mentioning. We tried to pin Verizon down on a launch timeframe, but all we could get was a “coming soon” from the company’s PR folk. We snapped a dozen or so images for your review, enjoy.

Hands-on with T-Mobile’s Nokia Astound

Hands-on with T-Mobile’s Nokia Astound

We just met up with Nokia and T-Mobile to check out the Astound, also known as the C7, which is the first Symbian^3 device to launch in the United States (even though Symbian^3 is now just Symbian). The Astound sports a 3.5-inch AMOLED touchscreen display, and the colors really popped off the screen during our time with the device — we watched a music video from Shakira, in case you were wondering. It’s also packed with some high-end specs, including an 8-megapixel camera that’s capable of recording 720p HD video, Bluetooth 3.0, and support for Wi-Fi b/g/n networks. Hit the jump to read on.
