Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket explodes in man’s pocket

Apple has accused Samsung of copying its designs on a number of occasions. While the foundation for Apple’s accusations is questionable, this is one area where Samsung clearly stole a page right out of Apple’s playbook. BGR reported earlier this week that a passenger aboard a flight in Australia was welcomed to his destination by a spontaneously combusting iPhone 4. Now, just three days later, a user on the xda-developers forum posted images of his friend’s Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket, which supposedly exploded in the man’s pocket. “He said he heard a sound, [felt] a burning sensation on his leg and as he pulled this piece of junk out of his pocket he smelled burning,” the forum user wrote. “There was smoke coming out of his pocket and out of the phone.” It does not appear that the man was injured by the smoldering smartphone. Additional images of the fried Galaxy S II Skyrocket follow below. Man’s Samsung Focus gets hot and bothered as it burns charger port, melts cable

Man’s Samsung Focus gets hot and bothered as it burns charger port, melts cable

A sad Samsung Focus owner recently took to AT&T’s online forum with a tale of woe that could spell trouble for AT&T and Samsung. With pictures as evidence, the man alleges that his Samsung smartphone overheated while charging and burned both the charger port and the cable connector. He claims that his handset began repeatedly sounding a charging chime, even when it was not plugged into the charger. The man plugged his phone in to see if it might stop the chimes and within 30 seconds he says he smelled the delightful aroma of burning electronics. A power surge could have been a possible explanation, but the plot then thickened; several other Focus owners have since reported symptoms similar to those that lead up to the meltdown, though none have reported fiery finales at this point. The story doesn’t quite have the same flare as news of an iPhone 4 owner whose device recently exploded and burned his hand, but we’re sure this former Focus fan didn’t mind escaping unscathed. What he did mind, however, is AT&T store reps’ less-than-helpful response to the man’s predicament. Rather than swapping the phone out on the spot, they’re making him jump through warranty claim hoops in order to replace his fricasseed phone. Hit the break for two more images of the damaged Focus. WSJ: Sony recalling over 500,000 VAIO laptops

Sony-VAIO-F-Series-Notebook

The Wall Street Journal reports that electronics giant Sony is recalling over 500,000 laptops for a “temperature-control defect that may cause excessive heat and distort the shape of the laptop” and/or ” skin burns.” The WSJ goes onto write: “The recall concerns some of the company’s F and C-Series Vaio laptops sold since January 2010. […] the recall applies to 259,000 laptops in the U.S., 103,000 in Europe, 120,000 in Asia and 52,000 in Japan.” Sony has stated that customers affected by the recall can fix the problem themselves by downloading a patch from Sony’s website, or have Sony pick the machine up to perform the repair work (which is just confusing ). Anyone out there rocking a hot VAIO? More →
