OnStar’s in-car LTE and Wi-Fi service looks like a treat for anyone buying a new GM car

General Motors is giving people who buy many of its 2015 models a treat in the form of OnStar with 4G LTE. The new OnStar with 4G LTE receives LTE data from AT&T and then converts it to Wi-Fi signals that can support up to seven devices in your car at once. This means that anyone you’re driving with can have access to the web on their laptops, smartphones and tablets while you’re driving. Even better, the Wi-Fi hotspot range extends to a 50-foot radius, which means you can have Wi-Fi connectivity from your car even if you’re not inside it.

Amazon intros ad-subsidized 'Kindle with Special Offers' for $114

Amazon intros ad-subsidized 'Kindle with Special Offers' for $114

Amazon has announced that its customers can now purchase an ad-subsidized version of its Kindle. The “Kindle with Special Offers” eReader will retail for $114 and comes with sponsored screen savers and advertisements on the bottom of the screen. Buick, Procter & Gamble, Visa, and Amazon.com Reward Visa Card (Chase) will be the first companies to offer sponsored screen savers, and Kindle users can use a free “AdMash” Kindle application to choose what ads are displayed. Initial deals include:

  • $10 for $20 Amazon.com Gift Card
  • $6 for 6 Audible Books (normally $68)
  • $1 for an album in the Amazon MP3 Store (choose from over 1 million albums)
  • $10 for $30 of products in the Amazon Denim Shop or Amazon Swim Shop
  • Free $100 Amazon.com Gift Card when you get an Amazon Rewards Visa Card (normally $30)
  • Buy one of 30 Kindle bestsellers with your Visa card and get $10 Amazon.com credit
  • 50% off Roku Streaming Player (normally $99)

We’d probably splurge and buy the ad-free Kindle, which costs just $25 more, and think this deal would probably be more attractive if it was in the sub-$100 range. The “Kindle with Special Offers” device will ship in the U.S. and customers can pre-order the device now. Hit the jump for the full release. More →

2010 NY Auto Show video

auto-show

We’ve always wanted to hit the NY Auto Show and this year, Buick sponsored our trip. There weren’t many brand new announcements (we actually can’t think of a single one that we can remember), but we did spend some quick time going over some of the cars that caught our eyes. Don’t judge us. Check out the brief video we put together after the jump!

BGR is headed to the New York Auto Show!

Buick-LaCrosse-1

We wanted to do something fun with car technology for the 2010 New York Auto Show… a little change of pace for BGR. This year, we’re doing some segments on all the different technology that goes into the latest and greatest vehicles currently available, and those that are about to hit the market. Buick has graciously sponsored our New York Auto Show coverage this year — they’ve even dropped off a Buick LaCrosse so we could see what kind of tech it’s pushin’. Look for our Auto Show coverage segments coming real soon, but for now, here’s a quick look at the 2010 Buick LaCrosse from a technology perspective.

BGR's Live Like A Genius series: Timbuk2 H.A.L.

BGR's Live Like A Genius series: Timbuk2 H.A.L.

Timbuk2 HAL

Here at BGR we need to be portable. Armed with a laptop, our favorite mobile device (or two), a mobile hotspot, and camera, we enjoy being mobile, agile, and hostile… when necessary. Agility and hostility come naturally to the BGR crew, but mobility is something we continuously work on. And what is the key to being mobile? A really, really ridiculously good bag. Our swag-bag of choice these days is the Timbuk2 H.A.L. (we have no idea what that stands for). The H.A.L. is specifically designed for people who carry a lot of equipment and are very active. The form-fitted straps provide easy access to your laptop while the bag is slung from one shoulder, the zippers are thick and don’t get jammed or caught, and we can’t seem to kill, or mangle, the nylon fabric that the pack is constructed from. The bag has a ton of storage space and compartments — several hidden — and can accommodate up to a 14.35” wide laptop in its armored compartment (14.35” wide is big enough to fit most 15” laptops as laptops are measured on the diagonal). Simply put: it’s a great bag. We’ve got a propaganda video from Timbuk2 queued up after the break… just in case you don’t want to take our word for it.
