Rogers announces official Blackberry Bold release date, August 21st

After several months of rumored release dates, false promises, disappointing rumors, and unfortunate delays Rogers Wireless has finally announced that the Blackberry Bold will be available beginning this Thursday, August 21st. While this is roughly 2 months after the first rumored release dates it’s still the first chance any of us in North American will have to purchase the handset via carrier-subsidized channels. Sure, interested parties are still looking at $399 on a 3-year contract, which is a bit insane given the relative cost of other competing handsets, but if you’re as excited about getting your hands on the latest and greatest RIM handset as we are, price is secondary to actual availability. Rogers employees have confirmed that they should be receiving their shipments beginning tomorrow, so lt’s all breathe a collective sigh of relief and summon a slow clap for RIM having finally ushered this beast out the door.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Don’t drop your BlackBerry Bold…

Don’t drop your BlackBerry Bold…

In tears. Was unloading my car, opening the trunk with the Bold in the same hand as the one I was opening the trunk with. Then “BAM.” It fell out of my hand about two feet onto pavement. My life flashed before my eyes. I quickly went to rescue the Bold. This is what the damage was. Heading to CNN.cn to buy new parts. Hate my life. Hate the Bold build materials even more. Word of advice from your friend BGizzle? Buy a condom skin for the Bold. As big and ugly as it makes the device, you’ll appreciate it in the end. Unless you have a stockpile of five Bolds like we do, then you can just pop open a new box and you’re good to go. Hit the gallery if you want to see the beating that the Bold took…

BlackBerry Bold browser walk through

Bored at work? Counting down those hours until you’re free? Hopefully this will help take your mind off of things. The biggest request we’ve been getting so far regarding the Bold is to post a browser walk through. We’re about to take you on a magical journey, friends, to BlackBerry Bold browser land. Somewhere you’ve never been before. Just for kicks we included some screen shots of the iPhone’s browser loading the same web pages, but as you can see, the Bold does a pretty decent job at banging sites. Hit the jump for all the pics and our comments!

BlackBerry Bold / BlackBerry Thunder release information

BlackBerry Bold / BlackBerry Thunder release information

First things first… how did you like our BlackBerry Bold review? If that just made you crave the device more, you might not be too pleased with the latest info we got. We’ve been told that the Bold might have been pushed back yet again. What’s the whispered launch month now? September for a lot of carriers. That’s not to say it couldn’t launch sooner on a couple carriers, but that’s what we were told. It looks like there are still some problems with the radio code that have to do with network roaming, searching, etc. The Bold software has not even gone GM3 yet, and with weekly builds still coming out, there’s nothing to be shipped at this point in time. The hardware side is done, but as usual, these units are waiting for the final flash to start FedExing. Now, what about the BlackBerry Thunder? We’ve held on to this information for a bit, but now that we’ve confirmed it with 2 independent sources, we’re ready to run with it. Here are the most confirmed Thunder dates: a huge marketing push in the U.S. starting in September, and device release in mid-October on Verizon. We said November because we were betting on a couple week delay which, knowing RIM, certainly wouldn’t be out of the question. But, we’re told RIM is fully active in doing everything they can to get the Thunder launch-ready, even putting it above the Bold in terms of prioritizing.

BlackBerry Bold review: we’ve been rockin’ it for a month

This might be a shocker out there to many, but we do actually, you know, not leak things from time to time. What’s important here, is that we’ve been rockin’ a BlackBerry Bold for around a month now, and we’ve got a great handle on the unit. From hardware to software, this is going to be the most complete BlackBerry Bold review, period. If you’re really ready, hit the jump. You might need a couple cigarettes and a cup of coffee — it’s long!

Are you really serious?

Are you really serious?

Like, for realz? You’re going after the kid right now? The Bold-breaker? Javelin-leaker? Thunder-scoopster? Kickstart-poster? I’m not even going to get into too many details but I will respond to a couple of the more stupid questions and insinuations posed. First off, you’re saying one of my AT&T sources gave me information on the Thunder, right? Because that makes so much sense. You know, a device which very few people have had access to, being used by someone who works for AT&T. If you haven’t heard by now, it’s coming to Verizon. Idiots. But what about time frame BG? “IT’S COMING OUT IN AUGUST!!!” What did I tell you when I broke the Thunder story? November. What’s 4-5 months from now? November. Oh, ok. Secondly, my source is a source I would trust 100x over almost anybody else. Not going to give too much away to protect him, but let’s say they work for RIM and has helped BGR out a ton in the past. Sorry guys, but we don’t regularly cite commenters as our “high-up sources.” Lastly… the iPhone fanboy accusations. Maybe you haven’t noticed, but 65-70% of our readers are BlackBerry fanatics, and we’re the world-leader in BlackBerry news. I didn’t want to get into this, but if you’d really like to, go add up all your “exclusive” BlackBerry stories and let’s see how many were correct. Then add up mine. Go ring-a-ling that bell somewhere else, because I don’t play games. I bring factual heat.

P.S. Please stop using the term ninja. Ninjas are people who risk their jobs and livelihood for your site and your readers, not people who comment on your blog.

Rogers makes new BlackBerry plans official

Rogers makes new BlackBerry plans official

Rogers has just released a slew of new BlackBerry data plans for your emailing and browsing pleasure. There’s still no unlimited BIS option, which is a bit confounding given the upcoming unlimited iPhone Data plan, but this is Rogers after all, so we’re not terribly shocked. The new plans breakdown as follows:

  • $30 – 300 MB
  • $60 – 1 GB
  • $80 – 3 GB
  • $100 – 6 GB

Um, yeah. That’s not cheap, though we have a hard time imagining a scenario in which 1 GB of data isn’t enough for average monthly usage, let along 6 GBs. Then again, with the upcoming Bold and its 3G radio, the potential for exorbitant data usage will certainly increase.

Thanks, Paul!

BlackBerry Bold meets iPhone

BlackBerry Bold meets iPhone

Interested in a side-by-side comparison of the current iPhone and the upcoming BlackBerry Bold? Yeah, we were too. Obvious differences not withstanding, the striking thing about the comparison is the similarities between the two devices. Dimensions of both are close to identical, though the Bold is certainly a bit thicker. The bezel on the Bold gives a visual cue to the iPhone’s bezel that is hard to ignore. Each device is clearly targeted at a slightly different market, but BlackBerry appears to have really stepped its styling game up, and while the screen on the Bold is notably smaller that its iPhone equivalent, the high resolution almost makes up for the lack of screen space. Not a whole lot of technical substance, but if eye-candy if your thing they’ve got it in droves. Hit the jump for a full video and a bunch more pics.
