Best Buy’s new ‘Buy Back’ program to launch January 5th for phones, laptops, tablets, and TVs

One of our trusted Best Buy sources has come through with several documents that provide additional details on the retailer’s new Buy Back program. The new protection plan, which allows consumers to sell back their devices for a percentage of the its original MSRP, will launch covering phones, laptops, netbooks, tablets, and TVs priced under $5,000 on January 5th; the service will be expanded to “other product categories” sometime during fiscal year 2012. To heighten awareness, commercials and advertisements will begin hitting the airwaves and print media beginning on February 6th.

The pricing structure for television “buy backs” will vary from that of computers, tablets, and smartphones. TVs under 6 months old can be turned in for 50% of the original full-retail price; 6 to 12 months, 40%; 12 to 18 months, 30%; 18 to 24 months, 20%; and 10% during the third and fourth years of ownership.

All “buy backs” will be issued in the form of Best Buy gift cards and the company is positioning the program to its sales staff as “protection against obsolescence.” Hit the jump to see a few more images and be sure to let us know what you think. More →

Best Buy not able to activate Google Nexus S lines, making people pay full retail?

Best Buy not able to activate Google Nexus S lines, making people pay full retail?

We just got a report that Best Buy’s new line activation system for T-Mobile is down, and apparently has been for almost a week. One of our readers wrote in to let us know he has been trying to purchase a Google Nexus S with a new T-Mobile line of service, but has been unable to due to Best Buy’s activation issue. After repeated calls to store representatives, one admitted that they are not able to activate his Nexus S with a contract, and that he’d have to pay full retail for the device. We’ve pinged Best Buy for comment, but has anyone else had trouble out there trying to buy a Nexus S with new line of service?

Thanks, Nevan!

Google Nexus S now available from Best Buy

Google Nexus S now available from Best Buy

The hour is upon us. Eager Android fans are finally able to get their mits on the latest and greatest Android smartphone (for now, at least) — Google’s Nexus S. The Nexus S is the first Android-powered device to ship with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), which means it’s also the first Android phone with NFC onboard. While it is highly unlikely that anything truly interesting will materialize with NFC in the U.S. during this particular phone’s lifetime, the technology is something we should look forward to seeing in all Android devices down the road. Google has made it pretty clear that NFC is a big part of its strategy as the company looks for new revenue streams from its mobile business. Beyond NFC, the Nexus S features a 4-inch Super-AMOLED display, a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, a 5-megapixel camera, a front-facing secondary camera for video chat and plenty more. It became available online and in Best Buy stores starting at 8:00am Eastern this morning for $529.99 unlocked or $199.99 with a two-year T-Mobile service contract. More →

Dell Streak now $99.99 from Best Buy

Fans of supersized smartphones should look no further than Best Buy Mobile this morning, where the Dell Streak has been dropped to just $99.99 with a two-year AT&T service contract. Current owners of the AT&T-branded Dell Streak are still a bit annoyed that the Froyo update has been delayed until January, but if you can tolerate Donut for another month, the Dell Streak is a solid option. Notable specs include that giant display, of course, alongside a 5-megapixel camera, a secondary VGA camera for video chat, HSPA (7.2Mbps down, 5.8Mbps up), 16GB of internal storage and microSDHC support. The Dell Streak is available online and at Best Buy Mobile locations in both white and black. More →

Motorola DROID Pro now $49 from Best Buy Mobile

Motorola DROID Pro now $49 from Best Buy Mobile

‘Tis the season, we suppose. Motorola’s latest, and most enterprise-focused DROID device has now dropped to the very appealing price of only $49.99 with new two year service agreement from Best Buy Mobile. Both online and physical store locations are offering the deal, and from what we have seen so far, this is the lowest out of the door price for this handset. Now, you’re ultimately going to have to make the call between the DROID Pro or the Motorola DROID 2 Global (if global DROID devices are up your alley, that is), but the price gap has definitely just been made a bunch wider. Make sure to check out our DROID Pro review to help you decide, ok?

iPad to be sold at all Best Buy Mobile locations

Following news that the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS would become available at Target stores on November 7th, Bloomberg BusinessWeek reports that Apple’s iPad will soon be available at all Best Buy Mobile locations. Apple continues to widen its net ahead of the 2010 holiday season, pushing popular products like the iPad and iPhone to as many new distributors as possible. Just last week, Apple added cellular giants Verizon Wireless and AT&T to its list of iPad vendors. Now, 158 stand-alone Best Buy Mobile locations will offer the popular iOS tablet by Thanksgiving. This is of course in addition to Best Buy’s standard retail locations, which have been selling the iPad since it launched this past April. Apple has already sold over 4 million iPads and with supply finally catching up to demand, the popular tablet is certain to be a hot item during the holiday season. More →
