Steve Jobs to give WWDC 2011 keynote [Update]

Steve Jobs will give the Worldwide Developers Conference keynote in San Francisco on June 7th, despite currently being on medical leave from the company. We expect that he’ll discuss Lion, the new iOS 5 operating system, and more. We’ll be reporting live from the event, which will be held at Moscone Center in San Francisco. It’s a little bit curious that news of Steve Jobs broke during the Microsoft Windows Phone Mango event.

UPDATE: GigaOm, the source of this report, has updated its post explaining that it accidentally reported information from last year’s WWDC press release thinking it was new. Apple has not announced that Steve Jobs will be at this year’s WWDC keynote. More →

RBC: Apple CEO’s departure won’t scare customers

Data from a survey released by RBC Capital Markets on Wednesday suggests that Apple customers’ buying intentions will not be impacted by Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ eventual departure from his role as chief executive. While pundits and analysts continue to panic over the possibility that the Apple chief may relinquish his role while on medical leave, RBC’s survey suggests customers aren’t quite as worried. 3,091 Apple customers responded to RBC’s survey between January 31st and February 9th, and 93% said they would continue buying Apple products once Jobs steps down. These results differ from data obtained from a similar survey conducted when Jobs took medical leave in 2008. At that time, 18% of respondents said they would be less likely to buy Apple’s wares. RBC suggests that the results indicate “Apple may be bigger than its CEO,” and that the company will continue to thrive in his absence. During Jobs’ last medical leave, Apple stock rose 144% and revenue rose 20%. RBC does note a potential long-term negative impact however, as Jobs is currently viewed as “Apple’s chief innovator, dealmaker, leader, motivator, and is deeply involved in minute decisions.”

Could Steve Jobs’ leave of absence be more serious this time around?

This morning, Apple revealed that its CEO and leader in every sense of the word, Steve Jobs, will be taking a medical leave of absence for an unspecified amount of time. While the news is shocking, it’s also apparently not completely unexpected. According to the New York Times, Steve Jobs “has looked increasingly frail” in recent months. Apple’s CEO was reportedly supposed to be at Verizon’s iPhone announcement event last week as well, and coupled with the delay of the new iPad digital newspaper The Daily, it’s beginning to look like there is something more to the story.
