Google unveils its most ambitious plan to take over your living room: Android TV

Google is still rolling through announcements at Google I/O and it just unveiled Android TV, a new platform for television that aims to make developing apps for TV just as easy as it is to develop apps for smartphones. The platform will essentially let you use your Android phone as your television’s remote control where you can open up an Android TV app that will let you control everything on your TV screen right from your smartphone. The Android TV app also integrates Google’s voice enabled search functionality so you can search for shows and movies without having to shuffle through any menus. More →

Google’s next attack on the living room will focus on games

Google desperately wants to be invited into your living room, as the company had so far various hits and misses in its relentless attack on home entertainment. The Chromecast was an immense success, following the Google TV which failed to grab enough attention from TV buyers and the Nexus Q, which failed to actually ship to consumers. However, Google won’t give up on its TV-related plans, and will introduce a new Android TV product at Google I/O, The Wall Street Journal has learned. More →

Google’s ‘Nexus TV’ may feature console gaming capabilities

Google has apparently purchased parts of Green Throttle Games, a company briefly known for its Android-based Atlas gaming controller and accessories that could offer Android gameplay on the TV. The tech giant apparently plans to include gaming features in its upcoming set-top TV box, PandoDaily reveals. It’s not clear how much Google paid for the company, and strangely, only two of the company’s co-founders will be working for Google moving forward. But Google did confirm the deal. More →

Google TV to finally get the ax as Android TV takes its place

It is fairly safe at this point to call Google TV a failed experiment. Google secured several partners for the service and dozens of Google TV-powered set-top boxes and smart TVs have launched over the years — but consumers never really cared. At all. One early Google TV partner went as far as to call the decision to build a Google TV box a mistake that cost the company dearly. It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise then, that Google has reportedly made the decision to call it quits with Google TV and launch a somewhat fresh new TV platform in its place. More →
