Netflix offering bandwidth tools to Canadian users

By Andrew Munchbach on March 29, 2011 at 9:07 AM.

Netflix offering bandwidth tools to Canadian users

If you’re a Canadian resident struggling with the newly imposed broadband data quotas, you’re definitely going to appreciate this. Netflix has announced a new set of tools available to Canadian users that can curb the amount of data used while streaming movies by up to 66%, “with minimal impact to video quality.”

“In the past, viewing 30 hours of Netflix could consume as much as 70 GBytes, if it was all in HD, and typically about 30 GBytes,” writes Neil Hunt, Chief Product Officer at Netflix. “If any member wants to change back to higher data usage and video quality, they can do so on the Manage Video Quality page, found under Your Account.”

Using the new settings, that same 30 hours of video can be viewed with just 9GB of data flying over the wire. If you’re interested to know exactly how Netflix has managed to slice and dice its data usage, there is some technical information waiting for you after the break. More →

Security flaw found in Citi Mobile iPhone app

By Kelly Hodgkins on July 27, 2010 at 1:23 AM.

Security flaw found in Citi Mobile iPhone app

Citigroup confirmed publicly that its Citi Mobile iPhone application has a major security flaw. The Citi Mobile application is used by Citibank customers to manage their bank accounts from their iPhone or iPod Touch. The application reportedly stored sensitive information — including account numbers, payment information, and security access codes — in a hidden file on the user’s phone. This file may also have been transferred to a PC if a user synced his or her phone with their machine. Before panic overtakes you, there is no indication that these files have been compromised by any known exploit. Nonetheless, Citibank is telling its customers to upgrade to the latest version of its application which deletes these hidden files. The updated version was released on July 19th and is available for download from the App store. More →

Facebook testing new account deletion feature

By Kelly Hodgkins on July 26, 2010 at 9:05 PM.

Facebook testing new account deletion feature

Facebook has confirmed that it is testing out a new feature that will provide users with the ability to delete their account. Currently, Facebook users that want to delete their account must go through the cumbersome process of first de-activating their account for 14 days before deletion takes place. For those that have gone through it, this process is heart-wrenching as Facebook assaults you with images of your friends who will “miss you” and reminds you during your 14 days of withdrawal that so-and-so has “tried to contact you.” Only the strong can make it through these two weeks of torture. This new feature will bypass this 14-day purgatory and will allow users to delete their account easily and presumably immediately. Don’t panic if you can not find this delete button as this feature is being tested on a  select number of users. Head on over to your Facebook account settings to see if you are one of the chosen few. More →

Verizon Wireless releases "My Verizon" application for BlackBerry handsets

By Kelly Hodgkins on April 22, 2009 at 4:27 PM.

Verizon Wireless releases "My Verizon" application for BlackBerry handsets

BlackBerry users on Big Red can now keep a leg up on their phone usage using Verizon’s latest BlackBerry application. Available for the Curve 8330, Pearl 8130 and 8830 World Edition, the My Verizon application allows users to check their minutes and data usage, view account balance, make payments, view plan, add/remove features and change their voicemail passwords directly on the handset. The application is available as an OTA download from the default Verizon BlackBerry browser homepage — http://mobile.vzwapp.com for those that have changed it. Unfortunately, Storm owners can skip this application as it is apparently compatible with trackball-sporting BlackBerry handsets only.
