The 3 weird gimmicks Nintendo is using to build on its newfound momentum

Against odds, Nintendo turned a profit in the September quarter. It turns out that Mario Kart 8 was successful enough to give the Wii U home console enough of a sales bump to help Nintendo to eke out a $86 million profit during the autumn period. Nintendo also repeated its vow to achieve profitability for the full fiscal year and after its autumn surprise, this suddenly seems achievable. More →

Hands on with the new Super Smash Bros. for Wii U’s 8-player mode

Earlier this week, Nintendo invited me to its New York office to go hands-on with the final build of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. I’d had the opportunity to play the console version of the new Smash Bros. twice before, but this was the first time I was able to see all of the new modes and features, including 8-Player Smash, Smash Tour and the Amiibo NFC figures. In an experiment to make us all feel like we’re way past our prime, a man decided to do speed runs of “classic games” on the Nintendo 64. To make matters worse, he managed to obliterate Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64 and Goldeneye 007 — three full games — in under an hour. More →

Bayonetta 2 review: A witch scorned

Bayonetta 2 doesn’t belong on the Wii U. It’s also exactly what the Wii U needs.

Bayonetta, the character, is everything that Nintendo hasn’t been for the past two console generations: brash, confident and self-aware. She has a sense of humor and she’ll never turn down a challenge, no matter how insurmountable it may appear. Nintendo’s willingness to take on this franchise might not be enough to restore its credibility with the core gaming crowd, but it’s a confident move in the right direction. More →

Hyrule Warriors review: A link to the past

Playing Hyrule Warriors is like playing with action figures — it’s not a great representation of how a war in the world of The Legend of Zelda would actually play out, but with a little imagination, everything comes to life. Hyrule Warriors is a bit of a mess, but once you become acclimated to the oft-repeated gameplay loop, there’s plenty of fun to be had. More →

Nintendo is hosting an 8-hour live stream of the best new Wii U and 3DS games

With all the doom and gloom surrounding the Wii U, it’s easy to forget that Nintendo still (occasionally) puts out some of the best games on the market. Super Mario 3D World was certainly a contender for game of the year last year, and now Nintendo is prepping what looks to be a solid, if scant, holiday lineup for 2014. More →

It’s been a trying year for Nintendo as the Wii U struggles to compete with the PS4 and Xbox One, but with the holiday season approaching, the company has a few tricks up its sleeve to entice fans. Unfortunately, those plans do not include an upgraded home console on par with the next-gen system from Microsoft and Sony. More →

Yet another hugely popular gaming franchise spurns the Wii U

Nintendo has always thrived on the strength of its first-party games, from Super Mario Bros. to the The Legend of Zelda, but a modern game console can’t survive without support from third-party developers. Worryingly, Nintendo doesn’t seem to be getting any this generation. More →

Check out these ridiculous, recently uncovered Nintendo facts, including Yoshi’s ‘real’ name

Nintendo has survived as long as it has, through thick and thin, on the strength of its characters — a group of plumbers, princesses, puffballs and emotive animals who have persisted from console generation to console generation since the 1980s. In all this time, you think we’d know all there was to know about Mario and his friends, but the Mushroom Kingdom holds many secrets, as Console Wars author Blake J. Harris has recently uncovered.
