The horrifying Wii U sales collapse

The horrifying Wii U sales collapse

There are rumors about Wii U sales in North America slipping below 40,000 units in April. But it’s a fact that Wii U sales in its home market of Japan spiraled below 7,000 units during the week ending May 12. This is an atrocious level. The ancient PS3 sold 12,000 units and the portable console champ 3DS sold 46,000 units during the same week. The PS Vita sold 12,000 units and even its predecessor the PSP managed to top 6,000 units. This means that the closest sales comparison to the Wii U is a Sony portable console that was replaced by a newer model more than a year ago. More →

Xbox 360 dominates console sales for 28th consecutive month

The Xbox 360 topped the charts again in April, marking the 28th consecutive month Microsoft’s gaming console has outsold Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii consoles. According to research from NPD Group, the Xbox 360 accounted for 42% of current-generation sales with 130,000 units sold last month. It wasn’t all good news, however, as sales plummeted 50% from 261,000 units in March. As a whole, the industry continued to struggle in April with total gaming sales down 25% year-over-year from $657.5 million to $495.2 million. Microsoft and Sony’s next-generation consoles are expected to help sales pick up when they launch ahead of the holidays this year.

Another blow for Nintendo: Next-gen EA games will skip the Wii U

Things keep getting darker for video game giant Nintendo. The news that the company’s previous-generation Wii console outsold the new Wii U during the first quarter really put Nintendo’s troubles in perspective, and now more bad news has emerged for the video game giant. As picked up in a report from Joystiq, an Electronic Arts executive has confirmed on Twitter that the company is abandoning plans to build its new gaming engine for the Wii U. More →

Nintendo Wii U sales in dire straits: Only 390,000 units sold last quarter

Nintendo Wii U sales in dire straits, being outsold by original Wii

Nintendo Wii U sales in dire straits, being outsold by original Wii

Nintendo is running out of time to sell the Wii U before it gets heavy competition from both the PlayStation 4 and the next Xbox. As Engadget points out, Nintendo has reported selling just 390,000 Wii U consoles over the past quarter, which puts its total number of consoles sold at just 3.45 million. This means that Nintendo didn’t even hit its sales target of 4 million consoles sold by the end of March, despite the fact that it was a downward revision from an earlier sales target of 5.5 million. But this isn’t even the most humiliating aspect of Nintendo’s anemic Wii U sales record, since T3 notes that Nintendo has actually sold around 4 million of its original Wii consoles since the launch of the Wii U, meaning that gamers are still much more interested in its years-old model than the current version.

Nintendo executive claims digital sales are soaring

Nintendo’s new Wii U has been labeled a flop with estimated sales of only 55,000 units domestically in the month of March. Nintendo of America’s chief executive Reggie Fils-Aime isn’t worried, however. The executive told GamesIndustry.biz that digital downloads are soaring and fast becoming a “notable contributor” to the company’s bottom line, a trend he believes will continue. More →

Wii U sales tank again, no sign of rebound in sight

Wii U sales reportedly tanked again in March, no rebound in sight

Wii U sales reportedly tanked again in March, no rebound in sight

The Wii U has been one of the least successful product launches in Nintendo’s history so far and Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter believes that there’s very little hope sales of the console will pick up anytime soon. Per Benzinga, Pachter says that “only 55,000 Wii U consoles were sold domestically in March,” which is down from the 66,000 consoles Nintendo sold in February and the 57,000 consoles it sold in January. What’s more, Pachter doesn’t think there’s much Nintendo can do to boost sales in the future as the Wii U’s “fortunes appear unlikely to improve for several months, even if Nintendo decides to drop [the] price, as there are an insufficient number of core titles that are generating interest in the console.” In other words, it’s not even clear at this point that issuing a PS Vita-style price cut can spark interest in the Wii U until the game selection for the console significantly improves.

Sony’s PS Vita comeback continues as Wii U flails

Sony’s PS Vita comeback continues as Wii U flails

This is a crucial period for the PlayStation Vita: several weeks after a price cut that revived the console in Japan, Vita is demonstrating fairly astonishing tenacity. According to Famitsu, Vita remained the No. 2 console in Japan during the week of March 31st with 33,000 units sold, down moderately from 38,000 units in the previous week. The reason this week was particularly important was the debut of a major new title for Nintendo’s (NTDOY) struggling home console Wii U. Alarm bells at Nintendo’s headquarters must be on full blast, because Dragon Quest X sold just 36,000 units and failed to lift weekly Wii U sales higher than 21,000 units from the previous week’s dismal 10,000 unit level. Wii U could be Nintendo’s first flop

Sales of Nintendo’s (NTDOY) Wii U gaming console continue to falter, according to the latest retail figures. The NPD Group on Thursday released its U.S. video game sales figures for the month of February, which shows that overall sales of new hardware, software and accessories declined 25% year-over-year. Individual hardware sales were hit the hardest, dropping a whopping 36% from February 2012 as consumers wait for the “Xbox 720″ and PlayStation 4. More →

Nintendo’s future called into question as Wii U sales plummet

Nintendo’s future called into question as Wii U sales plummet

Nintendo (NTDOY) now faces the very real prospect of having an absolute flop on its hands. As Microsoft (MSFT) moved an estimated 281,000 Xbox 360 consoles in the U.S. in January to take the top spot for the 25th consecutive month, Gamasutra reports that Nintendo sold “well under” 100,000 Wii U consoles last month. The site estimates that sales may have fallen between 45,000 and 59,000 units in January, which could mark the worst month for a Nintendo console since before the original Wii launched. More →

Nintendo says it won’t cut Wii U price despite slumping sales

Nintendo (NTDOY) has a lot riding on its latest video game console, but sales have been slow thus far. Gamers have not responded to the bulky new GamePad controller, which could be considered the biggest point of differentiation on the Wii U. As a result, Nintendo recently slashed its sales outlook on Wii U consoles for the March quarter. Following some speculation that Nintendo might cut the price of the Wii U in an effort to bolster sales, the company confirmed alongside its third-quarter results that dropping the console’s price is not an option. Nintendo lowers Wii U sales outlook

Nintendo (NTDOY) on Wednesday acknowledged what the world has long known — that virtually no one is buying its Wii U console. The Wall Street Journal reports that Nintendo has lowered its sales target for the Wii U from 5.5 million units by the end of March to just 4 million units based on “its performance in the year-end sales season and afterward.” Nintendo has also slashed its Wii U software sales estimates “by a third to 16 million units,” the Journal writes. Recent reports have pegged Wii U sales as low as 21,000 per week, or roughly the same as Sony’s (SNE) six-year-old PlayStation 3.

China may consider ending its decade-long ban on video game consoles

Shares of Sony (SNE) and Nintendo (NTDOY) surged on Monday following a report from China’s official newspaper that claimed the country is considering the lift of a decade-long ban on video game consoles. An unnamed source told the China Daily newspaper that the Ministry of Culture is “reviewing the policy,” and has conducted surveys and held discussions with other ministries on the possibility of lifting the ban. An official at the ministry’s cultural market department denied the report in a statement to Reuters, however, claiming it “is not considering lifting the ban.” More →

Nintendo’s Wii U problems turn into a crisis

In just a week, the problems Nintendo’s (NTDOY) new home console is facing have cascaded into something sinister. The traditional post-New Year slump hit Nintendo’s home market in the week ending January 12 and exposed cruelly how weak the consumer interest in Wii U truly is. According to Famitsu, Wii U sales slumped from a pace of 70,000 per week to just 21,000. The ancient PlayStation 3 sold the exact same number of units, which is nothing short of a debacle for Nintendo. The hot portable console 3DS saw its sales slow down from 305,000 units to 106,000 units.  This means that Nintendo’s portable machine is now outselling the brand new home console by a 5-to-1 margin in Japan.
