BlackBerry Bold 9780 hits Wind Mobile’s inventory system

If you’re a Canadian BlackBerry enthusiast on Wind Mobile, we’ve got some good news for you. One of our ninjas from the north has just alerted us that the Bold 9780 has just populated Wind’s inventory system. Couple the above screen shot with rumors of extremely low BlackBerry 9700 stock levels — thanks in part to a buy-one get-one (BOGO) promotion — and we would venture to say this puppy will be hitting store shelves in the very near future. As a quick refresher, the Bold 9780 packs Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 5 megapixel camera, 512MB of RAM, and runs RIM’s BlackBerry 6 operating system. Let us know if you’re planning on picking one up!

Motorola DROID Pro first impressions

Motorola DROID Pro first impressions

Verizon Wireless shot us over a Motorola DROID Pro handset this weekend and after spending some time with it, here are our first impressions of the little bugger. For starters, the device looks better in person than it does in the press / online photos. It is a little awkward at first, being a vertically-oriented display as opposed to a horizontally-positioned screen on a traditional BlackBerry, but after you pick up the phone and start using it, you realize this is the only way the phone could work. As far as the screen goes, it’s probably our biggest disappointment — the resolution. We realize it’s not a huge screen but 480×320 pixels in a world of 960×640 and 800×480 isn’t doing the DROID Pro any favors. The display is also not terribly vivid or crisp, and it reduces the powerful impact the DROID Pro has. Besides the display, though, the Motorola DROID Pro continues to impress us. Not because it’s the greatest Android handset released, but because of the purpose it serves. We joked with someone that this is the RIM Antichrist on Verizon, and it is. It’s a direct assault on RIM, and as BlackBerry-loving individuals, we actually love this phone. The keyboard is almost identical to BlackBerry Bold keyboards, right down to the placement of each key (besides the ALT and Shift keys, which are swapped) and keys’ shape. The keyboard is pretty easy to type on, though the keys are a little bit firmer than we would have liked. Hopefully that changes a tad with continued use.

We love the weight of the device and the entire experience of using a candy bar Android phone with a QWERTY keyboard. We even like how there is a programmable application key (in BlackBerry terms a right convenience key) on the right side. Something we can’t move past, though? The ear speaker. Talking on the phone with the DROID Pro is probably the worst of any handset we can remember. The ear speaker crackles, is distorted, and it sounds like there is some weird noise cancellation going on. Sometimes, audio doesn’t even come through. We have to believe this is an issue with our specific unit — we can’t imagine they are all like this, though we did confirm with someone else in possession of a DROID Pro that they have noticed some weird ear speakers issues as well. We’ll let you know in our review how it turns out as Verizon is swapping our unit with a different handset. Check out the photos in our gallery below, including some shots with a BlackBerry Bold 9780 — it’s on!

Bell Mobility launching BlackBerry Bold 9780 November 2

The release of the BlackBerry Bold 9780 is right around the corner, officially. Canada’s Bell Mobility has announced that they will be offering the Bold 9780 beginning on November 2, 2010. The handset, which will be available in both black and white, packs a 2.44-inch HVGA display with 480 x 360 resolution, BlackBerry 6, Wi-Fi, 5 megapixel camera with flash, 512 MB of RAM, tri-band UMTS radio 850/1900/2100MHz, and a quad-band GSM radio 850/900/1800/1900MHz. Subsidized pricing was not disclosed in the memo obtained by BGR; the device will retail for $499.99.

Now… when will this bad-boy show up Stateside?

Thanks, Brendan!

BlackBerry Bold 9780 artifacts appear on RIM's website

BlackBerry Bold 9780 artifacts appear on RIM's website

If you’re one of those people who still prefer the brutal, sometimes primitive, efficiency of a BlackBerry device, listen up. It looks like RIM is starting to get their proverbial ducks in a row for a 9780 launch in the near future. One of our readers was kind enough to point out the mention of the Bold 9780 on RIM’s official website. Links to a “9780 Demo” and “9780 Announcement” are visible on the 9700’s support page… for the time being. The links don’t yield any interesting results, but it certainly is a good sign for those waiting for the handsets release. T-Mobile launched the 9700 ahead of AT&T earlier this year, which carrier do we think is getting the device first this time?

Thanks, T.D.! More →

BlackBerry Bold 9780 hands on!

BlackBerry Bold 9780 hands on!

Our friendly FedEx guy just dropped off a present for us — the BlackBerry Bold 9780, replacing the Bold 9700 sometime in the next month or so. As far as the physical changes, well, the device features a glossy jet black bezel, with everything else outside staying the same. We leaked an internal document highlighting the changes in the Bold 9780, and we can confirm that the device seems to be using an updated CPU, even if the clock speed is around 624MHz. The phone boots up very fast, even faster than our regular 9700 with OS 6. The 512MB of RAM in the handset leaves around 300MB free at device start up, and like we said before, OS 6 really works great on a non-touch device overall. We have a boot up comparison video of the current BlackBerry Bold 9700 with the upcoming BlackBerry Bold 9780 side by side as well as photos if you want to get your viewing on. It’s all past the break, folks! More →

T-Mobile accessories guide shows Windows Phone 7 and others coming in November?

T-Mobile accessories guide shows Windows Phone 7 and others coming in November?

It looks like TMoNews has gotten there mitts on — what appears to be anyway — an accessories guide for U.S. carrier T-Mobile. What sets this list apart from others is that it details the availability of accessories for several unreleased, and even a few unknown, handsets. First and foremost, the sheet lists several cases for the HTC HD7 — a Windows Phone 7 device — as November 1. Want more? How about accessories for the LG Optimus T for November 1, Dell Claire for November 15, BlackBerry Bold 9780 for November 15, and Motorola Begonia for November 1. A phone simply referred to as the “Comet” is also listed with the date of November 1; no manufacturer is listed.

We have a pretty good idea of what the HD7, Optiums T, and Bold 9780 will look like. The Begonia, Comet, and Claire, however, are all new discoveries.

It is important to keep in mind that these are not handset launch dates, but rather dates that accessories will be available; TMoNews doesn’t specify whether that availability is to stores or warehouses or what. Regardless, if accessories are being made, the handsets have to be put into the wild soon. Anything on this laundry list enticing? More →
