Orange mulls pulling the BlackBerry Bold (again)

Orange mulls pulling the BlackBerry Bold (again)

According to a report issued this morning, European carrier Orange is considering dropping the Bold from its lineup after being unable to solve “ongoing technical issues.” Orange employees familiar with the matter have said the Bold has the highest rate of return in its category, something which is not sitting well with the higher-ups due to a previous issue with the Bold. Back in October, Orange halted sales of the Bold due to a high incidence of dropped calls, crashes and poor overall performance. After a more stable OS release from RIM however, sales of the Bold resumed. If Orange were to pull the Bold for the second time it would most likely remain sidelined for the duration of its market life which would deal a huge blow to RIM. To compound matters, this move would give a great deal of additional publicity to the woes of RIM’s latest flagship products, the Bold and the Storm. For the time being Orange has declined to comment on the matter, as was the company’s position before the Bold was pulled last year.

At the time of the first recall, every Bold on the Orange network was running OS 4.6.0.126, a very buggy release indeed. Since Orange reinstated the Bold however, it moved to OS 4.6.0.162 – also not the the most usable version issued in recent history. In all fairness to RIM and Orange customers, perhaps Orange should hurry up and release a new OS build like 4.6.0.190 or beyond (though many are a severe step backwards) as several other carriers have done.

E*trade Mobile Pro now available for BlackBerry Bold, for real this time

E*trade Mobile Pro now available for BlackBerry Bold, for real this time

While not everyone has the stomach to jump back into the market quite yet, those who still enjoy dabbling from time to time will be happy to learn that E*trade has finally made the official announcement we’ve been waiting for. Its mobile banking and trading application, E*trade Mobile Pro, is finally ready to roll on the BlackBerry Bold. That might sound familiar but as it turns out, certain firmware versions on the Bold were accidentally able to download a previous build. It worked pretty well for us though it wasn’t the prettiest app to look at since it was definitely not optimized for the Bold’s sizable display. This new version trumps it 50 times over though – it actually fits the screen properly, it’s sexy and it has tons more functionality. Oddly, both the old and new versions carry the same version number, 1.1.3, but the new build is most definitely optimized for the Bold where as the old one could barely be seen without a microscope. As part of the release celebration, E*trade also partnered with Wirefly to offer account holders a new Bold for $99 with a 2-year contract. Not a bad deal at $50 off Wirefly’s current Bold pricing. Hit the jump for a handful of screen shots.

Some AT&T stores to sell Blackberry Bold tomorrow

Some AT&T stores to sell Blackberry Bold tomorrow

We just got word that there are a few AT&T stores out there that have the Blackberry Bold in stock, and they might be selling them as soon as tomorrow! While it’s only two days before the official release date, we know that for some of you, it couldn’t be soon enough. One of our faithful readers chimed in letting us know they were able to play around with a Bold in store. At that location, they said they’d be selling them tomorrow, November 2nd. So, after calling around and seeing whether this was an isolated case, we’ve come to learn that there are some stores that are getting ready to dish out these BlackBerrys before the official release. Before you go waiting at AT&T’s doors before they open up, be sure to call your local store first to make sure they will be selling it. Remember, this is all at the manager’s discretion and not all stores will be offering them up. If your store isn’t selling until the 4th, check out our review of the Bold from this summer to get your appetite going and to temporarily satisfy your Bold cravings.

Thanks Marh!

CompUSA sells Blackberry Bold, and you thought Best Buy was expensive

CompUSA sells Blackberry Bold, and you thought Best Buy was expensive

Just when you thought only a crazy person would pay $679.99 for a Blackberry Bold from Best Buy, CompUSA goes and ups the ante. Now, for the bargain price of $799.99, you can have your very own Unlocked BlackBerry Bold! Guess what? For just another $149.98 you can “protect your investment” (at $800, you might as well consider it a poor investment) by adding an extended service plan. Is this the sign of a weak economy and a weak dollar? How does CompUSA go about pricing a device like this when just a few months ago they were closing up shop and selling all their furniture? Whatever the case may be, according to the site they have units in stock and available to be shipped out today. If there’s anyone who can’t wait the extra few days to score one from Best Buy or AT&T, time to break out that plastic. Anyone else notice that they’re also using a Rogers branded Bold in the image by the way?

[Thanks, David!]

And we have lift off: AT&T Bold launches on the 27th

This is for real, kids. Information has been pouring in left, right, and center from AT&T and RIM ninjas and we can now say for sure that AT&T is planning to launch the Bold on October 27. We repeat, October 27! You know, unless something goes “wrong” with the Bold in the eyes of AT&T and there is another delay… There’s plenty of other info on the internal email seen above so if the Bold isn’t your bag, check out full details on the rest of AT&T’s upcoming lineup. Anyway, it’s about frickin’ time, AT&T. Now that the date is nice and solid, we’ll just leave you with these internal AT&T training slides for the Bold.

BlackBerry Bold nearing release on AT&T?

BlackBerry Bold nearing release on AT&T?

If you have a BlackBerry Bold operating on AT&T, this morning you would have woke to a few new icons and service books for YellowPages.com Mobile and TeleNav AT&T Navigator. In fact, some of us have had those icons for a couple days now. Given the name of the YellowPages.com Mobile service book, we’re wondering if this is a good indicator that AT&T may very well be getting ready to finally launch the BlackBerry Bold. That or they’re just getting their ducks in a row, and you’ll have to wait until 2009 to get a Bold, which is entirely possible. Couple more shots of the service books after the break if you’re really interested.

RIM CEO says AT&T still testing Blackberry Bold

RIM CEO says AT&T still testing Blackberry Bold

It looks like RIM is saying, “Hey, don’t look at us! AT&T is still conducting testing!” Whomever we decide to point the finger toward is just beyond important anymore. The device was announced in May for a summer sale, and as of yet there are no official announcements from AT&T, the U.S. carrier for the Bold. It’s understandable that they would want to test the device for performance and avoid initial problems. Mike Lazaridis, RIM co-CEO, says, “There’s great scrutiny, as you might know, on that network and a certain device. So I guess everyone wants to be sure on every last test.” You guess? Again, this goes back to pointing the finger at AT&T and the iPhone because they weren’t prepared for the network congestion and the problems the iPhone would have. At this point, we don’t want to hear excuses anymore, we just want RIM and AT&T to get this thing out already! Besides, with the way Blackberry compresses data, just how much of a strain can it be to share with the “data-hogging” iPhone 3G? Didn’t RIM or AT&T already decide that they can have 20 Bolds for every iPhone on the network? Oh we get it! RIM has been shuffling all their engineers off the Bold and onto the Storm project…

Thanks Justin!

E*trade Mobile Pro now available for BlackBerry Bold

E*trade Mobile Pro now available for BlackBerry Bold

While the BlackBerry Bold is not yet listed as compatible on E*trade’s site, we can confirm that the app is finally ready to rock on the Bold. Woo! Bold owners who who hit etrade.com/mobile from their handsets will now be able to download version 1.1.3 of E*trade Mobile Pro, the stock information, trading and account management application issued by the popular online brokerage. We’ve been playing with it for a day or so now and we’ve got to say, it’s looking great on the high resolution Bold display. E*trade Mobile Pro allows E*trade customers to view and manage accounts, view real-time stock information, manage portfolios, execute stock and options trades using an E*trade brokerage account, check out relevant news, create watch lists and plenty more. To say it’s an awesome tool is a bit of an understatement really. The Bold version of the app is still a bit young so we’ve experienced a freeze or two but over all it works quite. If you’re an E*trade customer, definitely hit etrade.com/mobile and get your mobile trading on.

UPDATE: E*trade just dropped us a line to let us know that version 1.1.3 is not in fact the Bold-ready version, hense the glitches being reported. You might be able to download it and it’s working well enough for us but the full on Bold release is still to come. We’ll let you know as soon as it’s ready to rock.

Blackberry Bold release date at Best Buy

By on September 28, 2008 at 11:36 PM.

Blackberry Bold release date at Best Buy

One of the biggest questions on everyone’s mind (well, almost everyone) is: when the hell is the Bold coming to the U.S.? Well, we got our hands on this image showing a release date of October 26, 2008 in Best Buy’s system. That means it will likely be out a week or two before it hits this authorized AT&T retailer (early October, anyone?) So, for everyone who’s been harassing AT&T reps and customer service, you can relax a little knowing it’s going to be coming out much sooner than later. Perhaps it will follow the HTC Touch Diamond when they released it a week earlier than it was scheduled. Only time will tell, but we’re feeling the force is strong with this one. We were told to expect pricing “around $600.” Hit the break for a larger shot!

Thanks, A.D.

Rogers launches BlackBerry Bold today, maybe available tomorrow…

Canucks, your wait is over! Well, almost… According to several commenters who have chimed in, the long-awaited Blackberry Bold has been released by Rogers today but they can’t seem to find any in stock. Hmm, a little déjà vu, iPhone users? Maybe RIM and Rogers were too busy blowing up balloons for their celebratory launch and presentation, but anxious customers won’t have to wait much longer. According to RTT News, Best Buy Canada will be carrying the Blackberry Bold 9000 in stores all across the country starting tomorrow. So for those of you a little disappointed to find your local Rogers Wireless backordered this morning, or those who just don’t want to bang up their current Blackberry to win a new one, fear not! Head over to Best Buy tomorrow and you may be able to snag one up for $399.99 if you’re willing to sign the next 3 years of your life over to a minimum $45/month plan. Otherwise, the Bold retails for $599.99 without contract.

Thanks, to everyone who sent this in!

BlackBerry Bold Gets Approved by FCC

BlackBerry Bold Gets Approved by FCC

BlackBerry fans here in the US will be happy to learn that the BlackBerry 9000 aka Bold has just passed through the FCC testing process and received its approval. It has been quite a ride with the Bold dating back to October when we first broke it and even further back to January 2007 when we started telling you about the 90xx series. Now we’re likely just over a month away from a release and the only remaining question is whether or not people are still excited about it. Sure we all already know the specs but a quick highlight recap:

  • Quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)
  • Tri-band UMTS (850/1900/2100) with HSDPA support
  • WiFi
  • 480 x 320 pixel display
  • New UI including full-HTML browser
  • 1500 mAh battery

So there you have it. We’re closer than ever to a release; which by the way should happen on AT&T in mid August according to our sources. We’re almost there people – think it’ll warrant any iPhone-esque lines at AT&T stores?

U.S. BlackBerry BIS upgrades to v2.5 on June 28th, HTML email to follow

U.S. BlackBerry BIS upgrades to v2.5 on June 28th, HTML email to follow

It seems like we’ve been waiting so long for native HTML email support on BlackBerrys that we never thought this day would come. Thankfully, RIM is planning on upgrading their U.S. BIS system later this month, bringing a host of updates in anticipation of the arrival of their next-generation 9xxx device family. Most significantly, v2.5 of BIS will include support for HTML email delivery and rendering, a move that should finally bring the ‘Berry’s email appearance out of the stone-age. Further enhancements include support for OTA upgrades, calendar improvements, and a bit more. Bear in mind that your particular device will have to support these new features in order to allow you to take full advantage of the update, but seeing as we’ll all be carrying shiny new BlackBerry Bolds by the end of next month, you shouldn’t worry too much.

BlackBerry Bold hits Rogers on June 25th?

BlackBerry Bold hits Rogers on June 25th?

We’ve got two independant tips on this date, so let’s hope it pans out to be true. AT&T corporate is still telling their Fortune 500 customers that the Bold will launch in “July/August”. Hopefully Rogers will swift kick them in the ass and get them moving. What’s holding up the Bold, you ask? Well, nothing. The units went into production a while ago and the latest software build is extremely stable. It’s all up to the carriers now. What say you, friendly Canadians? Raiding a Rogers store on June 25th for a BlackBerry Bold? Our previous Rogers release dates were spot on, so we’ll see!

UPDATE: We’re now hearing July 17th with the launch party on July 8th… go figure.
