Dead man walking: Nokia brings 41-megapixel 808 PureView Symbian phone to U.S.

Nokia 808 PureView Release Date

Nokia on Tuesday announced that its “unique” 808 PureView smartphone will soon launch in the United States. Nokia’s new smartphone is indeed unique in a number of ways: it’s the first Nokia phone to use a 41-megapixel “PureView” camera that oversamples pixels and combines up to seven pixels at a time to create one “PurePixel,” which the company says helps to eliminate noise. The device is also unique because it is powered by the Symbian operating system, which is currently in the midst of a long, drawn-out walk down the green mile, having been replaced by Windows Phone. Nokia 808 PureView preorders will be available from Amazon starting next week, and the device will cost $699 with no service contract. The smartphone will operate on both AT&T and T-Mobile in the U.S., though data speeds will be limited to 2G on T-Mobile’s network. More →

Nokia's 41-megapixel camera phone launches this month

Nokia's 41-megapixel camera phone launches this month

Nokia 41 Megapixel Camera Phone

Nokia on Wednesday announced that its 41-megapixel camera-equipped 808 PureView smartphone will begin rolling out later this month in Russia, India and additional unnamed markets. Nokia unveiled the impressive camera phone in February during the annual Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain, and BGR took a hands-on look at the device during the show. While a 41-megapixel sensor coupled with Carl Zeiss optics place the handset in a league of its own, the 808 PureView is powered by the Symbian operating system, which Nokia is currently in the process of dumping in favor of Microsoft’s Windows Phone. “PureView has completely raised the bar on imaging performance for the whole smartphone industry – and Nokia is not stopping here,” Nokia smartphone boss Jo Harlow said. “We’re going to carry on developing PureView for our future smartphones in ways that will again revolutionize the imaging experience.” Nokia’s full press release follows below. Nokia PureView technology confirmed for Lumia Windows Phone family

During Nokia’s press conference at Mobile World Congress 2012, the Finnish smartphone maker introduced the Nokia 808 PureView. The handset is equipped with a jaw-dropping 41 megapixel camera, a 1.3GHz single-core processor, 512MB of RAM and the dated Symbian Belle operating system. The high resolution 41 megapixel sensor features Carl Zeiss optics and new pixel oversampling technology that allows you to zoom in without any loss of clarity when taking pictures at low resolutions. Nokia’s VP of Marketing, Jo Harlow, confirmed to Finnish newspaper Aamulehti that its PureView technology is heading to the Windows Phone mobile platform as a part of the Lumia series of smartphones. Harlow said that “it will not take very long” for the feature to come to its Windows Phone handsets, although he didn’t give a precise timeframe. More →

Nokia unveils 41-megapixel 808 PureView, entry-level Lumia 610

Nokia on Monday announced two new smartphones during its press conference at Mobile World Congress 2012. The star of the show was undoubtedly the Nokia 808 PureView, a smartphone the Finnish smartphone maker teased last week. Featuring a jaw-dropping 41-megapixel camera, the 808 PureView is a mobile photographer’s dream and a smartphone enthusiast’s nightmare. Why? The 808 features solid specs but it is powered by Symbian Belle, a dated operating system Nokia is currently in the process of tossing to the curb. Spec highlights include the high-resolution 41-megapixel sensor with Carl Zeiss optics and new pixel oversampling technology that allows users to zoom without any loss of clarity when taking pictures at low (2, 3, 5 or 8-megapixel) resolution, Dolby sound and the ability to record 1080p videos. Details surrounding the Lumia 610 follow below. More →
