Apple reportedly places orders for next-generation iPhone, new 10-inch iPad

Chinese supplier lands orders for next generation iPhone

The latest rumors out of the Far East indicate that Apple’s next-generation iPhone will launch in the fall, as will a new 10-inch iPad. Apple supplier Pegatron Technology has reportedly landed orders for the Cupertino-based company’s latest handset and according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers, the device is slated for a September launch, Digitimes reported. The publication also claims Pegatron has received orders for a new 10-inch iPad to be released in the fourth quarter of 2012. John Gruber of Daring Fireball has previously called the fourth quarter iPad report “completely made-up nonsense,” however. Pegatron currently manufacturers both the iPhone 4S and the new iPad, but Digitimes claims the long rumored 7-inch iPad, which will supposedly be released in August, will be manufactured by Foxconn. Samsung again tips ‘iPad mini,’ says Apple will buy $11B in Samsung parts this year

Apple plans to launch a smaller version of its popular iPad tablet later this year according to an unnamed official at Samsung. While speaking with The Korea Times, the anonymous Samsung official said that Apple will likely spend a record $11 billion on Samsung-sourced parts for its various devices in 2012. “The amount of the current contract is around $9.7 billion,” The Korea Times was told. The site’s source continued, “The contract is expected to rise to $11 billion by the end of this year as Apple is planning to release a smaller iPad, probably with a 7.85-inch screen, and to sell more of its MacBook Air PCs using Samsung’s faster solid state drive (SSD) storage.” Apple’s 7.85-inch iPad has been rumored on a number of occasions, and Samsung Securities mentioned the unconfirmed tablet recently in a confidential report. Samsung currently supplies a variety of parts for Apple’s PCs and mobile devices, and the company is reportedly the sole supplier of Retina Displays for Apple’s new iPad, which goes on sale Friday, March 16th. iPad mini with ‘slim bezel display’ may cost between $249 and $299

iPad mini with ‘slim bezel display’ may cost between $249 and $299

Apple’s often rumored “iPad mini” could feature a slim bezel display, allowing the screen to occupy a larger portion of the tablet’s face than it does on current iPad models. DigiTimes on Monday cited sources within Apple’s supply chain in claiming the new smaller iPad will utilize 7.85-inch IPS/FFS display panels built by LG Display and possibly AU Optronics as well. While the original iPad, iPad 2 and new iPad features a design that includes a fairly substantial bezel surrounding the screen, Apple’s iPad mini will reduce the size of the bezel, thus allowing Apple to create a smaller overall footprint. DigiTimes also reports that the new 7.85-inch iPad will likely be priced between $249 and $299 when it launches later this year. More →

Android tablet vendors may not survive an ‘iPad mini’

Android tablet vendors may not survive an ‘iPad mini’

Samsung, Asus and other Android tablet vendors are reportedly very concerned over rumors that Apple is working on a 7.85-inch version of its iPad tablet, currently referred to as the “iPad mini.” Apple sold more than 15 million post-PC slates in the December quarter last year, and Android tablet makers are said to be concerned that a smaller, cheaper version of Apple’s wildly popular tablet will make it extremely difficult to remain competitive in the space. Moreover, Google is said to be prepping an own-brand 7-inch Nexus tablet to launch later this year, which will likely make it even more difficult for Android partners to competeDigiTimes’s sources said “non-Apple” tablet vendors are fine for the time being thanks to the growing popularity of the 7-inch tablet space. If Apple and Google do release mid-sized tablets of their own, however, companies like Samsung and Asus “may soon have difficulty to survive” according to the site’s sources. More →

Apple’s ‘iPad mini’ may be even more mini than you thought

A new report suggests Apple’s upcoming “iPad mini” will be even smaller than earlier rumors suggested. Venturebeat is one of a number of sites that recently reported Apple’s upcoming next-generation iPad will be named “iPad HD.” The pixel-count certainly justifies the moniker — Apple’s new tablet will supposedly feature a high-definition 2,048 x 1,536-pixel display — and the rumors started with a leaked parts list that surfaced last week. The site also claims that Apple’s often rumored iPad mini, which is expected to launch some time in the second half this year, will feature a 7.1-inch display rather than a 7.85-inch display as we’ve heard numerous times in the past. Samsung Securities thinks Apple is making a 7-inch ‘iPad mini’

Apple is planning to launch a new “iPad mini” in the third quarter this year, according to a purported leaked document allegedly composed by Samsung Securities analyst JungHoon Chang. The document was obtained from an unnamed source and published on Saturday by OLED-Display.net on Saturday, but it is unclear if Chang possesses inside information relating to the iPad mini or if he is simply restating rumors that have been swirling for nearly a year. “Following the success of its iPad 1 and iPad 2, which have which have together achieved sales of 55m units, Apple plans in 1Q12 to launch the iPad 3 and in 3Q12 a new 7-inch product temporarily referred to as the iPad mini,” Chang wrote in the document. The analyst also notes that Apple may be in discussions with Samsung Electronics regarding the implementation of flexible AMOLED displays in future iPads and iPhones. More →

7-inch iPad again said to be nearing launch

7-inch iPad again said to be nearing launch

Apple is once again rumored to be going against the wishes of late co-founder Steve Jobs as it prepares to launch a 7-inch version of its popular iPad tablet. While speaking with Computerworld, Technology Business Research analyst Ezra Gottheil said that Apple may be preparing to launch two new products following the imminent release of the iPad 3. One is a case accessory that includes an integrated wireless keyboard, and the second is the oft-rumored iPad mini, which the analyst says will launch later this year. “I believe that’s always been in the plan” Gottheil said. “Actually that’s a good form factor for some users, and although they will also charge a premium above other similar-sized tablets, they want to protect that price flank.” Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs openly opposed the idea of a 7-inch tablet, noting that the smaller screen size inevitably mars the user experience. Even still, this would not be the first time a device would launch that contradicts Apple’s earlier claims. Earlier reports suggested the smaller iPad model will launch in the third-quarter this year. More →

Apple reportedly has no plans for a 7-inch iPad, iPad 2 price to drop when iPad 3 launches

A number of reports have emerged in recent months claiming that Apple has a new smaller iPad in the pipeline set to launch in 2012. Scheduled to be released in the second half of the year, the slate will reportedly feature a 7.85-inch display and a lower price tag compared to the current iPad 2 model. A new note from Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair suggests that Apple has no such plans, however, and it will stick to a 9.7-inch panel when it launches new iPad models next year. Read on for more.
