5530 XpressMusic pre-orders being taken by Nokia USA

Let’s face it. Things aren’t going too well for Nokia as of late when it comes to smartphones in the US. The N97 could very well have been released in ’97, the full-touchscreen 5800 XpressMusic is something we’d much rather not touch again and the E72 doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell at pulling the suits away from their ‘Berrys. Most of the blame can be directed toward an unimaginative OS and an utter lack of effective marketing but the easiest way to sum it up is that Nokia simply isn’t serving out what people here in the US are ordering up. Case in point, the 5530 XpressMusic. Sibling to the 5800 XpressMusic, the 5530 XM is pretty much a carbon copy of the 5800 XM save for the lack of 3G and an overall smaller footprint. On pre-order now from Nokia USA, it’ll run you $289.99 (which includes a free mini speaker) — a whole $10 less than the 5800 XM from Amazon. It doesn’t make any sense to us and is likely going to do nothing but turn more Americans away from Nokia, but come on now. It’s new, people. New! We’ll revisit it again once the early adopter tax is shed and we’re looking at an unlocked full touchscreen smartphone in the mid-$200 range, but we highly doubt it would sell well here in the US even at sub-$200 levels. Plain and simple; it was old news before it was even news.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Nokia E72 and 5530 officially unveiled in Singapore

Nokia E72 and 5530 officially unveiled in Singapore

Surprise, surprise! Shortly after showing up on YouTube, Nokia has officially announced the Nokia E72 alongside the 5530 XpressMusic at Connection 2009 in Singapore. The E72 is a worthy successor to the E71 with 10.2Mbps capabilities (where networks allow, of course), an integrated compass, S60 3rd Edition FP2 and a 5 megapixel camera. In slightly less glamorous news, the 5530 will be an EDGE phone with a 3.2 megapixel camera and a 640 x 360 touchscreen, which we’re hoping will at least be resistive. Although it has Wi-Fi, there is no 3G to be found and that leaves us speechless. Seriously, Nokia? You put out a phone capable of speeds over 10Mbps and you’re still making EDGE-only phones? Ok fine, this will help make the phone insanely accessible compared to the competition but sheesh, are 3G radios that expensive? The E72 and 5530 XpresMusic will be available in the third quarter for about $489 and $278, respectively.

New Nokia 5530 XpressMusic to arrive this fall?

We have to file this one under super-duper-rumor for the time being as zero evidence was provided, but according to Daily Mobile (a blog with a good track record) we may now have some preliminary details on one of Nokia’s upcoming fall handset launches. The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic will supposedly join the 5800 XpressMusic in Nokia’s lineup of music-oriented touchscreen handsets. As far as reported specs go, you’re looking at a 2.9-inch touchscreen display, 3.2 megapixel camera, 3.5mm headphone jack, Wi-Fi, FM Radio and will be powered by Symbian S60 5th Edition. This latest rumored offering is said to be debuting in September 2009, falling nicely in line with the trio of touchscreen handsets that are supposed to be launching this fall.
