LG’s 2011 lineup leaked, includes Fantasy, Victor, Gelato, more

LG has struggled to grab consumer interest the way Samsung has with its Galaxy S and Galaxy S II smartphones, and it doesn’t look like the manufacturer has a worthy competitor in the pipeline just yet. PocketNow purportedly leaked LG’s entire 2011 portfolio and while there are several attractive devices that run Android and Windows Phone, there is nothing that really blows us away. The lineup includes the following devices:

  • LG Prada K2 - An Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) smartphone with a 4.3-inch NOVA display, 16GB of storage, and support for 21Mbps+ networks.
  • LG Univa – An Android 2.3 device that is equipped with an 800MHz processor and a 3.5-inch HVGA display.
  • LG Fantasy - A Windows Phone Mango-powered device that could make its debut in the fourth quarter of this year. Renders of the phone suggest that it will offer a large display, but other hardware specs are currently not available.
  • LG Victor – A mid-range Android Gingerbread device with a 3.8-inch OLED WVGA display, a 5-megapixel camera and a 1GHz processor.
  • LG Gelato - A device that may land on Sprint with the model number LS685, a version of the Gelato will reportedly offers support for near-field communications (NFC). It’s equipped with  a 3.2-inch HVGA display, a 3-megapixel camera and an 800MHz processor.

PocketNow also revealed two more devices, the LG K and the E2, but little is currently known about them. We’re assuming that LG also has some more high-end handsets up its sleeves that it’s currently keeping closer to the vest — after all, the LG Thrill 4G (Optimus 3D), offers a high-end dual-core processor. Why would the manufacturer take a step backwards and just release a half-dozen mid-range handsets?

Microsoft reports blow-out Q4, record year on Xbox sales

Microsoft released its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings on Thursday and noted that its revenue of $17.73 billion was greater than any other fourth quarter in the company’s history. The Redmond-based firm also reported $69.94 billion in revenue for the fiscal year — also a record — up 12% from 2010. The company’s Entertainment & Devices division was particularly successful, reporting 30% growth in revenue for the fiscal fourth quarter and 45% for the entire year thanks to Xbox Live, the Xbox 360 game console, and the Kinect controller. “Throughout fiscal 2011, we delivered to market a strong lineup of products and services which translated into double-digit revenue growth, and operating margin expansion,” said Peter Klein, chief financial officer at Microsoft. “Our platform and cloud investments position us for long-term growth.” Read on for Microsoft’s full press release. China Telecom to offer iPhone this year

China Telecom will offer the iPhone to its 106 million subscribers this year, Reuters reported on Wednesday. China Unicom has been the exclusive iPhone seller in the country since 2009, but China Telecom will introduce an iPhone model on its CDMA network in November according to the report. The launch date implies that the carrier will carry Apple’s next-generation iPhone 5, which is rumored to be thinner and lighter than the current model. China Mobile, the third of China’s big three wireless carriers, is also expected to introduce the iPhone 5 in September. More →

Tablet shipments fell by 28% in Q1, full-year forecast still up on iPad demand, IDC says

Tablet shipments following the 2010 holiday season dropped by more than a quarter according to market watcher IDC, but the firm still raised its full-year forecast in its latest Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker report. First-quarter 2011 tablet shipments were down by 28% sequentially according to IDC, due to iPad shipments that were “well below expectations.” Yet the firm has high hopes for Apple’s iPad 2 tablet in 2011, and it raised its full-year shipment estimates to 53.5 million units from 50.4 million units as a result. Apple isn’t the only company finding success with tablets, however, as Android tablets were up 8.2 points sequentially to 34% of total shipments in the first quarter according to IDC. “Like the PC market, Media Tablets had a bit of a challenging quarter in Q1, as concerns about general macroeconomic issues and the post-holiday letdown took a toll on demand,” said IDC’s VP of Clients and Displays Bob O’Donnell in a statement. “We expect the rest of the year to be much stronger, but we believe vendors who continue to focus on the telco channel for distribution will face serious challenges.” O’Donnell’s colleague Jennifer Song, IDC Research Analyst, added, “Although media tablet sales were not as high as expected in 1Q11 due to slower consumer demand, overall economic conditions, and supply-chain constraints, we believe with the entrance of competitive new devices in second half of 2011, the market will sell close to 53 million units for the year and continue to grow long-term.” IDC’s full press release follows below. With just two smartphone models available for sale, Apple still managed to top comScore’s list of smartphone OEMs in the three-month period ending May 2011. Following this morning’s report that Microsoft’s share of the U.S. smartphone OS market has slid 35% since the launch of Windows Phone 7, more data from comScore’s most recent MobiLens report has been shared on the firm’s mobile blog. In this quick tidbit, the market research company notes that 76.8 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones during the three months ending in May of this year. Over that period of time, Apple was the No. 1 smartphone vendor with 26.6% of the market, despite the fact that the company sells just two phones: the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3GS. At 24.7%, RIM found itself second on the list, followed by HTC with 11.8% of the U.S. market. Motorola and Samsung rounded out the top-10 with 11.4% and 8.9%, respectively. Falling below the “other” category which sat in the No. 6 spot were LG with 4.8% of the U.S. market, HP with 2.7%, Nokia with 2.1%, Kyocera with 0.4% and finally Sony Ericsson with 0.2%. ComScore issued its May report on mobile subscriber market share in the U.S. last week, and BGR noted that Google’s Android OS and Apple’s iOS grew more popular in the month, mostly at RIM’s expense. Perhaps equally as troubling as RIM’s continued slide, however, is Microsoft’s position with Windows Phone. As noted by winrumors, Microsoft’s share of the U.S. smartphone market has dropped a whopping 35% since it released its next-generation smartphone platform in November of last year. At that time, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile accounted for an estimated 9% of smartphones sold in the U.S. In May, Microsoft’s combined share was just 5.8%. We’re big fans of Windows Phone here at BGR, but the lack of carrier attention has left the OS as something of an afterthought thus far. With Windows Phone 7.5 “Mango” devices due later this year and Nokia set to launch its first Windows Phone before 2012, Microsoft is well-positioned globally. Here in the U.S. however, the Redmond-based tech giant needs far more carrier support if it hopes to make a dent in an already crowded smartphone market. LG cuts full-year smartphone sales forecast by 20%


On Thursday LG’s Park Jong Seok, head of the mobile phone business, announced that his company is cutting its full-year smartphone sales forecast by 20% and now expects to sell 24 million smartphones in 2011, down from its earlier forecast of 30 million units. According to Bloomberg, Park noted that the mobile phone business is “slowly” improving but couldn’t provide a firm time on when investors would see improvement on the company’s balance sheet. “It’s hard to give an exact timing, because there are so many market variables, and the situation changes quickly,” he said. Park expects LG to sell 1.7 million units of its new Optimus 3D smartphone by the end of the year and said “we want to differentiate ourselves with good hardware such as the 3D model by taking advantage of what we are strong at, like displays.” On June 4th, LG’s CEO, Koo Bon Joon, said that his company would have a difficult time turning around its troubled handset business during the second quarter. The company’s phone shipments were down 10% year-over-year during the first quarter of 2011, while phone sales were down 14.3% quarter-over-quarter and 9.2% year-over-year. More →

iPad HD could launch in September alongside iPhone 5

According to Thisismynext, Apple is prepping to launch a brand new iPad — in tandem with the iPhone 5 deployment — this fall. The rumor mirrors a report from FBR Capital markets analyst Craig Berger, who said in a note to investors on Wednesday that Apple will release a higher-end version of the iPad 2 with a display that offers a higher pixel density. The device will reportedly be called the “iPad HD” and will sport a double resolution 2048 x 1536-pixel screen. Apple plans to market the iPad HD as the “pro” model in its tablet family, and like the MacBook Pro family, it might be marketed towards the videographer and photographer crowds, which need need more muscle out of their machines. Those professionals will be happy to hear the second part of the rumor, too: the iPad HD could launch with a new mobile version of Aperture or Final Cut. More →

A new report from market research firm Gartner on Tuesday suggests global spending on the gaming ecosystem will exceed $74 billion this year, up 10.4% from 2010. Gartner also expects annual spending on video games to reach $112 billion by 2015. As the video game industry undergoes a transition that places a sharper focus on casual gaming, Gartner now includes the following in its definition of the “gaming ecosystem:” dedicated video game consoles; software for dedicated consoles; handheld dedicated video game consoles and software; PC gaming software; mobile game software, which includes games for smartphones, feature phones and tablets; and online casual gaming. Video game software sales alone will reach $44.7 billion in 2011 according to Gartner, and it will continue to represent the lion’s share of video game spending moving forward. “This large market size means that many consumers embrace gaming as a core piece of their entertainment budget and will continue to play as long as game publishers deliver compelling and fun games,” said Gartner research director Fabrizio Biscotti in a statement. Apple to launch ‘iPad 2 Plus’ with better display this year, analyst claims

Apple is gearing up to launch an updated version of its popular iPad 2 tablet with a high-resolution display later this year, according to FBR Capital Markets analyst Craig Berger. In a note to investors on Wednesday, the analyst claimed that Apple is currently shopping for quotes from manufacturers in China. The new iPad, which he calls an “iPad 2 Plus,” will not be an entirely new model as earlier reports have stated. Instead, Berger’s sources say the update will be a high-end version of the iPad 2 with a better display; the analyst believes Apple will increase the device’s pixel density from the current iPad 2 display’s 132 pixels per inch to between 250 and 300 pixels per inch. The move would be extremely curious for Apple, but it is possible. Apple could release a new high-end iPad featuring a 2048 x 1536-pixel display, which is double the current model’s resolution, and developers would able to maintain a single version of each application that will accommodate both screens. This would be a similar scenario to what we have now with the iPhone 3GS (480 x 320-pixel display) and iPhone 4 (960 x 640-pixel display). Berger believes Apple may now meet or even exceed his build target of between 40 and 45 million iPad tablets in 2011.

More than 320M PCs, 48M tablets to ship in 2011

Taiwan-based Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute expects roughly 360 million combined personal computers and media tablets to ship in 2011, Taiwan Economic News reports. MIC sees PC shipments growing 6.6% over 2010 to land at more than 320 million units this year, and it thinks shipments of media tablets like Apple’s iPad 2ill w exceed 48 million units in 2011, up 198% from 2010. MIC senior industry analyst Chris Wei notes that the improving global economy and replacement PC purchases in the enterprise market would be largely responsible for this year’s growth. Needham & Company analyst Charlie Wolf recently estimated that Apple would ship 30 million iPad tablets in 2011, but the company will likely far exceed that figure if tablet shipments are indeed to surpass 48 million units as MIC predicts. Sony to launch PlayStation 4 in 2012, report claims

Sony’s manufacturing partners will begin building the consumer electronics giant’s next-generation video game console toward the end of this year, with a launch scheduled for 2012, DigiTimes reports. Details surrounding Sony’s PlayStation 4 are very limited for the time being, but the report states that the new console will feature integrated movement-based controls similar to the Microsoft Kinect controller. Foxconn and Pegatron, the two manufacturing firms charged with assembling Sony’s PlayStation 3, will build the new console according to DigiTimes’ sources. 2012 shipment volume for the PS4 is said to be at least 20 million units. Sony’s PlayStation 4 was not expected to launch until 2013 or 2014, but with Nintendo’s Wii U launching next year and Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox due to be unveiled in 2012 as well, it is possible that Sony accelerated the new console’s development in order to remain competitive. Sony’s current PlayStation 3 console has sold more than 51 million units globally since its launch in November 2006. More →

iPhone, Android gain U.S. share in May, BlackBerry falters

Apple and Google both gained smartphone share in the U.S. last month according to new data from Nielsen. The research firm on Thursday released a brief detail of the U.S. smartphone market in May following a survey of mobile consumers. Android represented 38% of the smartphone market in May, up two points from 36% in 3-month period ending in April. Apple’s iOS platform gained a single percentage point over the same period to climb to 27%, and RIM’s BlackBerry platform slid two points to 21%. Microsoft’s Windows Mobile and Windows Phone platforms were flat at 9% and 1% respectively, and Palm OS, webOS and Symbian were flat as well. Interestingly, 55% of U.S. consumers who purchased a cell phone in the past three months report buying a smartphone over a feature phone, up from 34% in the same period last year. This is the first time the company determined that smartphones beat out feature phones among recent cell phone buyers. Nielsen also found that Android’s share of recent smartphone acquirers was flat over the past three months while Apple’s iOS was the only smartphone OS to gain share among this group, jumping to 17% from 10% in the prior three-month period.
