Verizon LTE comercial boasts December launch; Motorola DROID 2 Global becomes official

If you were watching Sunday Night Football last night, you may have caught Verizon’s first TV spot for its LTE, 4G network. At the end of the spot — which stars an eager consumer getting a Verizon parcel containing a lighting bolt — the screen reads “Coming December 2010.” We’re fairly sure that VZW won’t flip the switch on its next generation network without a little press fanfare; expect to see a Verizon media event announcement in early to mid-December.

Also, Verizon quietly updated its website replacing the three-month old Motorola DROID 2 with the DROID 2 Global. The device is available for $199 with a signed two-year contract and $100 mail-in rebate. The only announcement Verizon made was a small entry on its Facebook page touting the device’s ability to operating in over 220 countries — perhaps an effort not to insult those who purchased the original DROID 2?

Oh Palm/HP, why do you continue to taunt those from your home country? Two weeks ago, the Palm Pre 2 — complete with webOS 2.0 — launched on wireless provider SFR in France. Blog Pocket-lint is reporting that HP confirmed the unlocked, unbranded Pre 2 will be available to our friends across the pond starting tomorrow; price was not disclosed.

Rumors — that HP actually started via its Facebook page — indicated that the device would be available to developers here in the U.S. starting November 8th. Sadly, said rumors did not materialize. Looks like those here in the U.S. of A. still longing to get their hands on webOS 2.0 will just have to long a little… um, longer? More →

Motorola’s DROID 2 Global lands on Verizon Wireless’ website; $199, 1.2GHz

We knew that we would have the opportunity to pre-order Verizon Wireless’ DROID Pro today, but we didn’t really expect to see the DROID 2 Global. Late last night, Verizon quietly added the D2 Global edition to its handset lineup; the device is live on the the site and available to order. The spec sheet on the DROID 2 Global mirrors that of the original DROID 2, with the exception of an added quad-band GSM and tri-band UMTS radio for world roaming capabilities, an upgraded 1.2GHz processor, and a white exterior (we’re assuming black is coming). The more worldly Droid 2 will retail for $199 with a 2-year contract and, if all rumors hold true, will completely replace the original D2 in the next month or so. Go ahead, hit the read link and have a look for yourself.

Throwback Thursday: Tiger’s Talkboy

For this week’s Throwback Thursday we’re going to rewind time all the way back to 1993 (did you see what we did just there… try and keep up). Let’s take a trip down memory lane to try and get you into the proper frame of mind. In 1993: Bill Clinton was inaugurated as the 42nd President of the United States, the band Ace of Base had a hot new single called The Sign, and Macaulay Culkin was regarded as an up-and-coming young actor… and still sane. In fact, you have a young Mr. Culkin and 20th Century Fox’s Home Alone franchise to thank for this product’s existence. Hit the jump to read more about… the Tiger Talkboy. More →

Palm Pre Plus 2 pre-orders begin November 8

Windows Phone 7 has been getting a lot of press as the new mobile OS on the block over the last few months, but webOS aficionados and smartphone junkies alike know that webOS 2.0 — and the Palm Pre 2 — will be storming the U.S. market in the very near future. How near you ask? Well, according to HP’s Facebook page, just six days from now on November 8th. The company posted the following message:

HP for Students – US: Check out the new Palm Pre Plus 2, pre-orders begin 11/8

It is unclear whether the “pre-orders” the post is referring to will be for the Verizon Wireless Pre Plus 2 or an unlocked GSM device that is rumored to exist for developers. Looks like we’ll find out soon enough!

VZ Navigator for Motorola DROID 2 Global surfaces in Android Market

It looks like Verizon is continuing to get their proverbial “ducks in a row” for the launch of the Motorola DROID 2 Global — an Android 2.2 handset with a 1.2GHz processor and international roaming capabilities. Earlier today, a version of Verizon’s VZ Navigator specific to the DROID 2 Global popped up in the Android market. We know the device will be available in both black and white and, judging by this latest bit of leaked information, the device should be hitting store shelves in the not too distant future. Verizon Wireless rebate form outs two DROID 2 global handsets, Continuum, Citrus

It looks like Verizon Wireless will be sharpening up their entire phone lineup in time for the holidays. Engadget has just published an excerpt from Verizon’s latest cell phone rebate sheet, and the discount-document has quite a story to tell. The document details several Motorola devices; including the DROID Pro, Citrus, and two SKUs for the DROID 2 Global. The two-SKU listing for the DROID 2 could indicate one model with a camera and one model without, or that the handset will come in two different colors. Although not listed above, the blog also notes that the Palm Pre 2, LG Cosmos Touch, Samsung Zeal, and Samsung Continuum make the list. Just in time for the holidays. More →

UPDATED: DROID X, DROID 2 over-clocked to a face melting 2.0GHz [UPDATE] make that 3.0GHz

UPDATED: DROID X, DROID 2 over-clocked to a face melting 2.0GHz [UPDATE] make that 3.0GHz

Wondering just how much juice could be squeezed from your Motorola DROID X or DROID 2 after seeing T-Mobile’s G2 up-clocked to 1.42GHz? Well, wonder no more. Droid-Life is reporting that two users from Team DeFuse have managed to over-clock both the DROID X and DROID 2 from 1.0GHz all the way up to 2.0GHz. The blog also noted that the duo is working to “make the release stable,” which would be pretty impressive. We haven’t seen any benchmark statistics emerge from the severely over-clocked handsets, but we’re sure it is only a matter of time. Hit the break to see a short video showing the D2 running at warp speed.

UPDATE: Matt from Team DeFuse just hit us up with an update. He’s managed to ratchet up the DROID 2 up to 3.0GHz. Nice work Matt, keep a fire extinguisher close by though!

UPDATE 2: According to a tweet by the developer of SetCPU, this is all a hoax: “Okay, the 2GHz video is a deliberate and obvious hoax, not even confusion.”

UPDATE 3: Matt hit us up again with another, very not fake, video of his DROID 2 running at 3.0GHz. We can’t take all this blogging drama on a Friday. Hit the jump for the new video. More →

Next Apple iPhone (Verizon model) hits “AP” field test stage, iPhone 5 hits “EVT” stage?

By on October 18, 2010 at 3:43 PM.

Next Apple iPhone (Verizon model) hits “AP” field test stage, iPhone 5 hits “EVT” stage?

One of our solid Apple sources has just let us know some pretty interesting (and exciting) information surrounding Apple’s upcoming iPhone devices. For starters, we have been told that iPhone model 3,2 — what everyone is assuming to be the Verizon (or at least CDMA-compatible) phone — just hit the “AP” testing stage. This is the very last stage before retail release; final hardware, almost final software. Here is the odd thing, though… the iPhone 3,2 unit, we have been exclusively told, contains a SIM card slot. This is interesting for a multitude of reasons, and presents several different scenarios:

  • The iPhone 3,2 could be the mythical CDMA + GSM/HSPA device that would support Verizon, AT&T, and the other current worldwide iPhone 4 carriers frequencies. The mid-cycle refresh would bring an updated antenna design for the current iPhone 4 and bring CDMA-compatibility; essentially, Verizon Wireless subscribers would have the same device as AT&T subscribers.
  • The iPhone 3,2 could be a CDMA-capable iPhone that houses a SIM card for global roaming capabilities; though that certainly seems more complicated than just having one single glove that would fit both hands.
  • One last possibility that the iPhone model 3,2 would simply be a slightly different design that doesn’t suffer from the same antenna attenuation as the current model; though that would be a little disappointing.

As far as the next generation iPhone 5, our source has also indicated to us that device has hit the “EVT” stage in the development cycle. The “EVT” stage is the engineering verification test phase, before the “DVT” phase.
