Video: Galaxy Note 3 ad mocks the iPhone’s puny, inadequate 4-inch display

You know what they say about guys with big smartphones? OK, they don’t really say anything about them but Samsung is nonetheless trying to convince you that bigger is better in its latest ad for the Galaxy Note 3 that makes fun of the iPhone 5s’s 4-inch display, which it says is positively wimpy compared with the Note 3′s massive 5.7-inch Super AMOLED full HD display. How to make your Galaxy Note 3 look totally ridiculous for only $300

Are you a Galaxy Note 3 owner who has $300 to spend on a smartphone cover? If so then we might have a product for you. Sammy Hub points out that Samsung has teamed up with luxury crystal designer Swarovski to produce a $300 Galaxy Note 3 case that’s covered in shiny crystals. Anyone interested in buying the cover will have three color options to choose from: Crystal Bermuda Blue, Crystal Metallic Light Gold and Crystal Metallic Silver. Supplies are limited, however, so if you really want to spend $300 to make your phablet look like a rejected prop from a third-rate hip-hop video, you should probably act soon.

Yes, the KitKat update did sort-of break your Galaxy Note 3

After initially denying that the Android 4.4 KitKat update recently released for the Galaxy Note 3 caused any issues with third-party accessories for the device, Samsung has come clean to ArsTechnica and admitted that the software is to blame for the broken functionality of those accessories. Specifically, unofficial Note 3 cases similar to Samsung’s S-View Flip Cover do not work after updating the smartphone to KitKat, users have discovered. It turns out that Samsung’s cases contain a special chip that has been suddenly enabled via KitKat — the S-View feature allows users to access a portion of the display and interact with it without removing the cover. Galaxy Note 3 KitKat update rollout begins earlier than expected

There have been plenty of indications that the latest Android software update would be coming to the newest flagship Samsung devices this month, but it looks like the rollout has finally begun. SamMobile reports that the Android 4.4.2 update is currently available for the Galaxy Note 3 in Poland via the Kies desktop transfer software and should be downloadable as an over the air update soon. According to SamMobile, the build number is identical to that of the leaked firmware from last Friday. There is no word yet on when the update will start making its way overseas, but the delay between regions is rarely longer than a few weeks.

Phablet fever seen hitting America in 2014

As much as some like to make fun of phablets, their popularity continues to grow. According to one analyst’s predictions, phablets will even outsell small tablets in 2014. As reported in Forbes, Bob O’Donnell of Technalysis Research predicts that in 2014, 175 million phablets will be sold compared to 165 million small tablets. He defines small tablets as tablets with screens that are less than 8 inches and phablets as phones with screens larger than 5 inches. More →

Galaxy S4 Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat Upgrade

Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3 may get latest Android software in January

Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3 may get latest Android software in January

Owners of Samsung’s two most popular devices may not have to wait much longer to get them upgraded to the latest Android software. French carrier SFR is claiming that both the Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy S4 will start getting upgraded to Android 4.4 KitKat in late January or early February. Although upgrades on one French carrier don’t necessarily tell us whether upgrades will happen in a similar timeframe on American carriers, SamMobile notes that “SFR has quite the track record of giving away tentative dates for software updates even before Samsung makes an announcement,” so it wouldn’t be surprising to see both devices upgraded to KitKat on American carriers in early 2014 as well.

The best smartphones in the world, 2013 edition (part 1)

Another year is almost behind us and if you were following the smartphone industry, which continues to be the biggest market in consumer tech, it was quite a year indeed. Samsung extended its volume lead over other companies by such an incredible margin that it now sells more smartphones into channels each quarter than all of its top rivals combined. In fact, Samsung ships about 1 million smartphones each day. Apple debuted two new smartphones for the first time ever in 2013 and it sold 9 million new iPhones through their first weekend of availability alone. As for the rest of the major players in the global smartphone market, things are still not looking very good. More →
