Surface Pro 2 update released to fix December mess

Microsoft late last week started rolling out an update for the Surface Pro 2 that fixes some of the issues caused by a previous unsuccessful firmware update that was released in December only to be pulled before the holidays. The update is only available on those machines that were updated last month. “This weekend we released an update that addresses the unexpected wake and battery drain behavior experienced by a small number of Surface Pro 2 customers who installed the December Windows Update.” Microsoft told ZDNet in a brief statement.” This should have no impact on customers who had not received the December update. We are working hard to deliver the rest of the December update to those customers who had not received it prior to it being removed from distribution.” More →

Microsoft quietly upgrades Surface Pro 2 processor

Despite being launched only a few months ago, the Surface Pro 2 has quietly received a processor upgrade, WinBeta reports. Following the unsuccessful December 2013 software update that Microsoft was forced to put on hold until after the holidays, some new Surface Pro 2 buyers decided to have their now-faulty devices replaced with a new device and discovered the CPU upgrade in the process. Microsoft yanks update that wrecked the Surface Pro 2

Many Surface Pro 2 users who have updated their device using recently released system firmware have posted complaints all across Microsoft’s support pages demanding that the company completely remove the update with a few days to go until Christmas. Some of the affected Surface Pro 2 owners reported that the update simply failed to install correctly despite numerous tries, while others who were successful or partially successful with the updates experienced battery-charging issues with their devices, problems with putting the device to sleep and/or shutting it down and even overheating caused by the tablet’s inability to sleep.

‘Extremely popular’ Surface Pro 2, Surface 2 sold out at retailers

Microsoft’s Surface Pro 2 and Surface 2 tablets are selling very well, according to Mashable‘s checks with various retailers where the devices are sold out with just over a week to go until Christmas. It’s unclear whether Microsoft built smaller quantities of tablets and might be manufacturing the sellouts, or whether the company is actually enjoying a hot streak with Surface Pro 2 and Surface 2 sales. Hands on with Microsoft’s Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2: In search of a tablet turnaround

By on September 23, 2013 at 12:34 PM.

When I reviewed Microsoft’s first tablet last year, I said it showed a great deal of promise but that Windows RT had some serious wrinkles that needed ironing, not the least of which was a severe app problem. Beyond that, the $630 price tag with a keyboard attachment was a huge barrier. I also said it was my favorite tablet on the planet in terms of hardware design, though, and that it made me really, really want the Surface Pro. Then in January I finally got my hands on the Surface Pro I had been waiting for — and it was worth the wait. This gorgeous machine featured almost everything I loved about the Surface tablet, but it also ran full-blown Windows 8 Pro and therefore supported tens of thousands of Windows apps from day one. But the sleek slate was priced higher than people expected and the battery life was disappointing to many. In the end, Microsoft’s debut tablet family went nowhere fast. But if at first you don’t succeed… More →

Microsoft unveils Surface Pro 2 with big boost to battery life

Although rumors and leaks might have spoiled the surprise, Microsoft officially uncovered the Surface Pro 2 on Monday, the follow up to its more powerful Surface Pro tablet. As the leaks suggested, the Surface Pro 2 will feature Windows 8.1, a Haswell-based Core i5 processor, 4GB or 8GB of RAM, a bigger battery, and an improved kickstand.

Live coverage: Microsoft unveils next-generation Surface tablets

Microsoft’s first-generation Surface tablets were surprising in a number of ways. The fact that this was Microsoft’s first ever tablet effort and the hardware was so gorgeous and well-designed blew us away. But unfortunately, the other surprises were bad ones — namely the half-baked Windows RT operating system on the Surface RT and the relatively high price tags on both models. Microsoft ended up pulling in $853 million from sales of its Surface tablets during fiscal 2013, but it also took a $900 million charge related to moving unsold Surface inventory. It has been almost a year since the first Surface tablet debuted though, and hopefully Microsoft learned from its mistakes. Will the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 be a different story? Will Microsoft add a third tablet to its lineup to compete with the iPad mini? Our live coverage, which will be updated periodically with photos and text coverage, follows below. More →

We’ll be live from Microsoft’s next-gen Surface tablet event at 10:30AM today

Microsoft’s first-generation Surface RT and Surface Pro tablets were easily the most sleek and unique next-generation Windows devices that debuted between late 2012 and early 2013. They also didn’t come anywhere close to meeting Microsoft’s sales expectations and the company had to take a $900 million write-down last quarter related to unsold inventory. If half a dozen independent reports and Microsoft’s invitations to the press are any indication, we’re about to see the sequels to these two ill-fated slates unveiled. And according to a few reports from reliable sites, the new Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 will be incremental updates priced in line with the original models at launch. Has Microsoft learned from its mistakes? Will the company have a few surprises in store to help reverse the next-generation Surface tablets’ fortunes? A report from early Monday morning suggests Microsoft might finally unveil its iPad mini competitor during the press conference, so tune into our live coverage to find out.

Microsoft issues invitations to September 23rd event – new Surface tablets expected

Microsoft on Monday issued invitations to the media for a press conference that will be held in New York City on September 23rd. We know from the invites that the company’s Surface lineup will be the focus of the event, and while no specific details were shared alongside the invitation, it seems pretty likely that we can expect refreshed hardware to be shown off for the first time. Rumored specs for the second-generation Surface Pro include an Intel Haswell processor, 8GB and a redesigned dual-position kickstand, while Microsoft’s Surface RT sequel will sport a 1080p display, a Tegra 4 processor and both black and white color options, according to a recent report from WinSuperSite. The new Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1 operating systems are each expected to be on board, of course. Pricing and launch dates for the new Surface slates are still unknown, but BGR will be on hand at Microsoft’s event on September 23rd to bring you all the news as it breaks. An image of Microsoft’s invitation follows below.

New details emerge on Microsoft’s Surface Pro sequel

Microsoft’s Surface Pro was a terrific tablet in many ways but it wasn’t a particularly successful one as far as sales go. That doesn’t mean Microsoft is throwing in the towel, of course, and now Neowin’s sources have given us some fresh details on what we can expect from the upcoming Surface Pro sequel. According to Neowin, the next-generation Surface Pro will run Intel’s Haswell-based Core i5 chips, will see its RAM double from 4GB to 8GB and will feature a redesigned kickstand that the website speculates “could be a more robust stand that is stronger or one that offers alternative viewing angles.” Neowin also expects Microsoft will kick off a refreshed marketing campaign for both the new Surface Pro and Surface RT that will hopefully not involve too much dancing.
