LG’s flagship phone whiffs on expectations, sells 2.3 million units

Who would have thought that having buttons on the back of your smartphone wouldn’t be a killer feature after all. 9to5Google points us to a report from Asia Today claiming that LG’s newest G2 flagship smartphone has sold around 2.3 million units so far, well below the company’s expectations. As 9to5Google notes, LG thought that it would sell around 3 million in just the third quarter of 2013 alone so it looks like the company has become only the latest to have trouble meeting sales expectations in the over-saturated high-end smartphone market. BGR reviewed the G2 this past fall and found that it was a big step backward for LG, which had previously released the very impressive Optimus G flagship smartphone back in 2012.

20 bystanders shot with BBs during LG G2 promotion gone wrong

Forget about buttons on the back of the smartphoneLG may want to make its next device bulletproof. The Korea Times reports that 20 people were injured last week during a promotional event in Korea where the company released 100 balloons in the air containing coupons offering free LG G2 smartphones. The trouble started when some aspiring G2 owners fired BB guns at the balloons to bring them down, which resulted in injuries to 20 people, some of whom were hospitalized. LG says that it’s providing proper compensation to everyone who suffered from injuries at the event. The company has also cancelled plans to hold similar events in other cities throughout Korea.

New flagship LG G2 could launch same day it is unveiled

LG hasn’t left much to the imagination where its new flagship LG G2 is concerned. While most smartphone makers go to great lengths to keep unannounced devices a secret, LG has already named its new hero phone and shared a number of details.  The phone will be unveiled during a press conference on Wednesday, August 7th, and now a new report suggests it may launch the very same day. Korean-language MK News reports that the G2 will become available for purchase in South Korea immediately following its debut at LG’s press conference in New York City. Because of the time zone difference, the phone’s actual release date will be August 8th in South Korea, if the report pans out. Unfortunately, MK News makes no mention of wider availability so it is unclear when the G2 might roll out in the United States. The G2 is expected to feature a 5.2-inch full HD 1080p display, a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel rear camera. Photos of the phone leaked late last month.

Video: LG teases next-gen G2 flagship ahead of August debut

With just under one month until LG takes the wraps off of its next-generation flagship G2 smartphone, the company has posted a teaser video in an effort to generate some buzz.
