Apple reportedly set to fight iPhone 5c flop with new cheaper version launching tomorrow [updated]

The iPhone 5c has been a failed experiment for Apple, as evidenced by nearly everything we’ve seen regarding the colorful device since it launched last year. As inventory has piled up, huge discounts have swept through virtually every retailer carrying the underpowered smartphone, but one report signals that Apple hasn’t given up on the 5c quite yet. Even more evidence that the iPhone 5c is a flop across the globe

Odd though it may seem, selling a significantly less powerful and less appealing smartphone for barely any discount compared to your flagship smartphone isn’t a good idea. We have seen countless signs that Apple’s iPhone 5c has been a pretty magnificent flop thus far, and now we have one more to add to the growing collection. As shared by Andreessen Horowitz analyst Benedict Evans, the following chart shows iPhone market share on Chinese analytics company Umeng’s network within the first six  months of each launch: More →

A costly mistake: Report claims unsold iPhone 5c inventory is piling up fast

A new report from Taiwan indicates that stock of the unsuccessful iPhone 5c is piling up with Apple’s suppliers and retail partners, as demand for the handset is still lower than expected – previous reports have revealed that the iPhone 5s was Apple’s real winner when it comes to the 2013 iPhone models, with the iPhone 5c not attracting enough buyers. The stupidest possible explanation of why the iPhone 5c is a flop

Regular BGR readers might notice that while we report on research from many industry analysts who cover Apple, it has been several years since we’ve written about anything from Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster. It’s not that we have anything against Mr. Munster personally, it’s just that his sources are patently wrong about almost everything, his methods are sometimes borderline comical, and his theories are often ridiculous. After three Munster-free years, however, the analyst on Monday issued some new research to clients that included a hypothesis so outlandish, we couldn’t help but cover it. More →

Apple’s former ad guru explains why the iPhone 5c flopped

Consumer reception to the iPhone 5c has been on the whole underwhelming to say the least. Now former Apple advertising executive Ken Segall has penned a short autopsy of the iPhone 5c on his blog and comes to the conclusion that Apple’s user base just has no use for cheap-looking plastic phones. iOS 7 jailbreak updated to support latest software version

Good news, iOS 7 jailbreakers: the team of hackers behind the Evasi0n7 jailbreak for iOS 7 has updated its software to support the latest publicly available version of Apple’s mobile operating system. Just over a week ago, Apple surprised us all with the release of iOS 7.0.5. The new software build, which is thought to be the final iOS 7 update Apple plans to issue ahead of its iOS 7.1 release, was made available only for iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c handsets in certain regions including Asia Pacific and Europe. Now, users in those regions with jailbroken handsets can finally update their phones without worrying about losing access to all those great unauthorized apps and tweaks. More →

What can we learn from the iPhone 5c and Windows 8 flops?

What can we learn from the iPhone 5c and Windows 8 flops?

Whenever an exciting new trend in the tech world arises, analysts are quick to declare that every other company must quickly follow this trend or else be left in the dust. We’re seeing this right now with analysts declaring that Apple “needs” to release a phablet and we’ve seen it in the past with analysts declaring that Microsoft “needs” to build a more touch-centric version of Windows to compete with the iPad. I admit that I’ve certainly fallen for this line of thinking many times myself since it’s easy to get caught up in looking at sales trends without taking a step back to look at the bigger picture. The iPhone 5c flop hurt Apple more than you might realize

By on January 28, 2014 at 9:55 AM.

Apple’s fiscal first-quarter earnings report was actually pretty good despite the 8% ding to Apple’s share price after hours on Monday, with the company beating earnings and revenue estimates handily on the way to selling 51 million iPhones. However, if Apple CEO Tim Cook and his team had been a bit more prepared, they could’ve sold a lot more than that. More →

iPhone 5c in-store screen repair now available at Apple Stores

Starting this Monday, you will no longer have to turn to third parties to fix your cracked screen on your iPhone 5c. CNN has confirmed with an Apple Store employee that iPhone 5c screen repairs are now being offered in-store for $149, although an Apple spokesperson declined to comment on the matter. Apple took almost an entire year after launch to begin offering in-store iPhone 5 screen repairs, so it was clearly a priority to speed up the process this time around. There is still no word on when the offer will be extended to the iPhone 5s.

Apple to start repairing iPhone 5c screens at Apple Stores next week

Apple might finally have an in-house solution for the countless iPhone users who always manage to find a way to crack their screens. 9to5Mac reports that Apple Stores will begin offering iPhone 5c screen repairs next Monday, January 20th. Previously, Apple’s only method for dealing with cracked screens was to replace the phone entirely, which could be extraordinarily expensive without a warranty, and would also take a fair amount of time. On the other hand, a screen repair will reportedly cost $150 and could be completed within an hour. The worldwide launch of the iPhone 5c screen repair program will begin next week, but repairs for the iPhone 5s are still in a limited rollout stage.

Apple’s iPhone 5c gambit is going (sort of) as planned

Apple’s iPhone 5c gambit is going (sort of) as planned

From a sales perspective, the iPhone 5c looks like a dud… but that doesn’t mean Apple is at all disappointed with it. As we’ve noted in the past, one of Apple’s top goals with the iPhone 5c was to make a lower-cost alternative to the iPhone 5s that would also be much cheaper to produce than the older iPhone 5.
