New gadget turns your iPhone into a night vision camera

Apple’s iPhone can do a lot of things, but giving its owner night vision definitely isn’t one of them. In fact, most iPhone models can barely capture a decent photograph in low light, let alone see in a pitch black room. Enter the Flir One iPhone case, which is compatible with either the iPhone 5 or iPhone 5s and features an integrated night vision camera. It isn’t traditional night vision of course, which would be very cost prohibitive. Instead, the Flir One “detects infrared energy (heat) and converts it into an electronic signal, which is then processed to produce a thermal image on your phone screen and perform temperature calculations,” according to Flir’s website. The case will launch this spring and will cost $350.

Your iPhone 5s is a hands-free 360-degree panoramic camera and you didn’t even know it

There are plenty of iOS and Android developers out there who get creative with their apps, but Egos Ventures have taken things to a whole new level. The Atlanta, Georgia-based company bills itself as an “innovation lab” and with apps like Cycloramic, the shoe most certainly fits. The team’s first app makes use of the high-quality camera and the vibrating motor in Apple’s iPhone 5s and iPhone 5 to transform either phone into a hands-free 360-degree panoramic camera or a 360-degree video camera with the touch of a button. iPhone 5s pitted against iPhone 5 in stunning camera showdown

By on October 14, 2013 at 12:45 PM.

It might be more than a year old now, but Apple’s iPhone 5 still has one of the most impressive cameras that has ever been included on a cell phone. In terms of color reproduction and clarity, the iPhone 5 pushed mobile photography to a whole new level. With the iPhone 5s, however, Apple claimed that it made its 8-megapixel camera even more impressive. Early tests suggested that there are indeed some noticeable improvements and an in-depth iPhone 5s camera review came to some pretty impressive conclusions. But we still hadn’t seen a thorough review from a well-respected photographer comparing the iPhone 5s camera to the one on the iPhone 5 — until now. More →

iPhone 5 deemed most hated smartphone, Galaxy S4 is most loved

Apple’s iPhone 5 might be the best-selling smartphone in the world, but a new study suggests it is also the “most hated.” The Daily Mail points us to a study conducted by U.K.-based social media agency We Are Social that analyzed chatter on Twitter, blogs and forums following the launches of the iPhone 5, Galaxy S4, Lumia 920 and BlackBerry Z10. After tracking the responses and comparing each of the four devices, the firm found that 20% of the posts discussing the iPhone 5 were complaints. This compares to 18% of posts that complained about the BlackBerry Z10 and 15% that griped about Nokia’s Lumia 920. Just 11% of posts covering the Galaxy S4 were complaints, leading We Are Social to conclude that Samsung’s flagship phone is the “most loved” handset on the market. More →

Boston University claims Apple stole its semiconductor tech

Apple has been accused of stealing patented technology from Boston University. According to the Boston Herald, BU filed a lawsuit on Tuesday in the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts against the against Apple for allegedly ripping off one of its professor’s patented electronic semiconductor designs. BU claims a “small electronic component” that was invented by computer engineering professor Theodore D. Moustakas and patented in 1997 is being used in the iPhone 5, iPad and MacBook Air. Apple again seen losing steam, new products needed desperately

Apple managed to earn $9.5 billion in profit on $43.6 billion in sales last quarter without launching any exciting new devices, but the long wait for new launches is expected to begin taking its toll this quarter. Oppenheimer analyst Ittai Kidron cut his fiscal third-quarter sales estimates in a note to clients on Tuesday. While iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S sales are “stable,” according to the analyst, checks are apparently showing that iPhone 5 sell-through has been “mixed.” As a result, Kidron cut his June-quarter EPS estimate to $7.23 on $35 billion in revenue. In the fiscal fourth quarter, he sees Apple earning $8.84 per share on $38.9 billion in sales. Galaxy S4 helped Samsung outsell Apple for the first time since iPhone 5 debut

The arrival of the Galaxy S4 helped Samsung outsell Apple in the U.S. for the first time since the iPhone 5 launched more than eight months ago. Michael Walkley of Canaccord Genuity notes that Samsung’s flagship device was the top-selling smartphone in May on Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile, and second best-selling handset on AT&T, behind the iPhone 5. The Galaxy S4 wasn’t the only reason Samsung outsold its rivals, however. Lower prices for the Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III gave Samsung the extra boost it needed to become the top-selling vendor in the U.S. last month. More →

Galaxy S4, HTC One can’t take the wind out of iPhone’s sales

Apple hasn’t been getting much love on Wall Street in recent months, but new research suggests Apple’s iPhone line is holding up nicely against recent challengers from Samsung and HTC. Mark Gerber of Boston-based brokerage Detweiler Fenton did some digging and found that sales of Apple’s iPhone in the U.S. are still strong despite the recent launches of Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and the HTC One. What’s more, Gerber says that iPhone 5 sales continue to make up a healthy portion of total iPhone sales, which will certainly come as good news for investors keeping a close watch on Apple’s margins. Apple’s iPhone sales tactics come under fire in Europe

The European Commission is reportedly investigating whether Apple is using “anti-competitive iPhone sales tactics and technical restrictions” to edge out rivals in the European market, according the Financial Times. The probe is said to be focused on Apple’s distribution terms, which may prevent rival smartphone vendors like Samsung from securing a better sales deal. The investigation is the result of an influx of private complaints from mobile operators, however it is still in its preliminary stages. More →
