Cheap third-party chargers could kill your iPhone

It’s true what they say about getting what you pay for, especially when it comes to electronics. The team of repair specialists at mendmyi in the UK have recently been receiving far more iPhone 5 repairs than they are used to. Every iPhone 5 owner had the same complaint: the device wouldn’t recharge after the battery died. The screen wouldn’t even light back up. More →

You can now get completely free calling, texting and data on your iPhone

We have some good news and we have some bad news. The good news is that FreedomPop, provider of 100% free wireless voice, text and data service now supports Apple’s iPhone 5. The bad news is that the carrier’s free plan is for very, very light users who consume less than 500MB each month, speak in the phone fewer than 200 minutes per month and send and receive less than 500 combined messages.

If you don’t fall into that category, however, you still have some surprisingly affordable options to choose from. More →

Staff sergeant Shaun Frank survived a brutal suicide bombing from just feet away while on tour in Afghanistan, and he has his iPhone 5 to thank. KSL on Tuesday reported on the story of staff sgt. New gadget turns your iPhone into a night vision camera

Apple’s iPhone can do a lot of things, but giving its owner night vision definitely isn’t one of them. In fact, most iPhone models can barely capture a decent photograph in low light, let alone see in a pitch black room. Enter the Flir One iPhone case, which is compatible with either the iPhone 5 or iPhone 5s and features an integrated night vision camera. It isn’t traditional night vision of course, which would be very cost prohibitive. Instead, the Flir One “detects infrared energy (heat) and converts it into an electronic signal, which is then processed to produce a thermal image on your phone screen and perform temperature calculations,” according to Flir’s website. The case will launch this spring and will cost $350.

Your iPhone 5s is a hands-free 360-degree panoramic camera and you didn’t even know it

There are plenty of iOS and Android developers out there who get creative with their apps, but Egos Ventures have taken things to a whole new level. The Atlanta, Georgia-based company bills itself as an “innovation lab” and with apps like Cycloramic, the shoe most certainly fits. The team’s first app makes use of the high-quality camera and the vibrating motor in Apple’s iPhone 5s and iPhone 5 to transform either phone into a hands-free 360-degree panoramic camera or a 360-degree video camera with the touch of a button. iPhone 5s pitted against iPhone 5 in stunning camera showdown

By on October 14, 2013 at 12:45 PM.

It might be more than a year old now, but Apple’s iPhone 5 still has one of the most impressive cameras that has ever been included on a cell phone. In terms of color reproduction and clarity, the iPhone 5 pushed mobile photography to a whole new level. With the iPhone 5s, however, Apple claimed that it made its 8-megapixel camera even more impressive. Early tests suggested that there are indeed some noticeable improvements and an in-depth iPhone 5s camera review came to some pretty impressive conclusions. But we still hadn’t seen a thorough review from a well-respected photographer comparing the iPhone 5s camera to the one on the iPhone 5 — until now. More →

iPhone 5 deemed most hated smartphone, Galaxy S4 is most loved

Apple’s iPhone 5 might be the best-selling smartphone in the world, but a new study suggests it is also the “most hated.” The Daily Mail points us to a study conducted by U.K.-based social media agency We Are Social that analyzed chatter on Twitter, blogs and forums following the launches of the iPhone 5, Galaxy S4, Lumia 920 and BlackBerry Z10. After tracking the responses and comparing each of the four devices, the firm found that 20% of the posts discussing the iPhone 5 were complaints. This compares to 18% of posts that complained about the BlackBerry Z10 and 15% that griped about Nokia’s Lumia 920. Just 11% of posts covering the Galaxy S4 were complaints, leading We Are Social to conclude that Samsung’s flagship phone is the “most loved” handset on the market. More →

Boston University claims Apple stole its semiconductor tech

Apple has been accused of stealing patented technology from Boston University. According to the Boston Herald, BU filed a lawsuit on Tuesday in the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts against the against Apple for allegedly ripping off one of its professor’s patented electronic semiconductor designs. BU claims a “small electronic component” that was invented by computer engineering professor Theodore D. Moustakas and patented in 1997 is being used in the iPhone 5, iPad and MacBook Air. The university says that Apple’s actions have “caused and will continue to cause substantial and irreparable damage to the University.” The Herald notes that BU has filed eight identical claims against smaller vendors in the past year, and has also targeted both Samsung and Amazon.
