New leak shows how efficient Samsung has gotten at copying Apple

When Apple unveiled the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus this past September, there were almost no surprises left. The phones’ “boring” new design had leaked months ahead of the event, as it always does, and nearly all of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus’s new features had already been revealed by insiders. We knew about the new cameras, we new about the new components, and of course we knew that the 3.5mm headphone jack would no longer be included on the new iPhones. The biggest surprise ended up being a second new color option for Apple’s 2016 iPhones.

The matte black color that replaced Space Gray had already leaked, and there were murmurs of a possible new deep blue color coming to the iPhone 7. Instead, Apple revealed a stunning new Jet Black color with a glossy, mirror-like finish. The new color is so popular that it’s still next to impossible to walk into a store and buy a Jet Black iPhone 7 Plus. And since it’s so popular, it goes without saying that Samsung was going to do everything in its power to copy it as quickly as possible. More →

Samsung kicks off Android 7.0 beta program for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge

It’s no secret that Android fans have a really hard time running the latest Android version on their non-Nexus devices. Google has not fixed this fragmentation problem, as Android updates are still controlled by device makers and carriers. Not including the Google Pixel, the hottest Android smartphones released this year are still on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. But some companies are already working on Android 7.0 updates, and Samsung just kicked off a Nougat beta program for its Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge flagships.

Galaxy S7 Edge Explosions

Now Galaxy S7 edge phones are exploding, but don’t freak out just yet

Now Galaxy S7 edge phones are exploding, but don’t freak out just yet

Samsung still has a massive Galaxy Note 7 recall to deal with, and that’s the only Samsung smartphone that has been exploding at a much higher rate than what would be statistically acceptable. The fact is that anything packing a battery has a theoretical risk of explosion. If it occurs due to faulty components, as is the case of the Galaxy Note 7, then there’s a real danger that must be addressed. But other Samsung phones are safe, even if there are sporadic reports of non-Note 7 handsets exploding.

Such is the case with the Galaxy S7 edge, a six-months-old phone that’s about as safe as any other phone — at least until Samsung or any other authority says otherwise. More →

Camera shootout pits Google’s Pixel against the iPhone 7 and Galaxy S7 edge

Although the iPhone 7 wasn’t as excited a departure as many smartphone junkies had hoped it might be, reviews proved it was still one of the best phones of the year when it launched in September. The same can’t be said of Google’s Pixel, which was raked over the coals by several prominent publications.

But if you’re more concerned about your smartphone’s camera than you are about hardware design, you might want to give the Pixel a chance.

Galaxy Note 7 vs. Galaxy S7 Recall

Samsung probably regrets skipping the ‘Galaxy Note 6’ name

Samsung probably regrets skipping the ‘Galaxy Note 6’ name

Samsung decided to skip the Galaxy Note 6 name for this year’s new flagship phablet and jump from Note 5 directly to Note 7. The move was supposed to align the numbers of the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy S so that customers wouldn’t be confused. The Galaxy Note 6 product name may have sounded like it’s a year behind the Galaxy S7. But Samsung probably regrets that decision now that the Galaxy Note 7 became the company’s best Android phone but also the worst mobile failure in the company’s history.

Galaxy S7 edge explodes in the Philippines

The Galaxy Note 7 is the only Samsung phone that experienced widespread battery issues that lead to explosions and fires. Samsung had to recall the handset and offer replacements and refunds to affected buyers. Samsung fixed the problem, and successfully replaced hundreds of thousands of units around the world. However, Samsung has to clean up its image as well, and that’s a tough task when other Samsung phones explode.

6 months later, Samsung’s Galaxy S7 edge is still the best Android phone of the year

6 months later, Samsung’s Galaxy S7 edge is still the best Android phone of the year

There is a distinct possibility that when all is said and done in 2016, Samsung’s Galaxy S7 edge will be the hottest smartphone that was released all year. That’s pretty crazy when you stop to consider the fact that the phone was first released all the way back in March of this year; as fast as technology progresses these days, the best phone of 2016 may end up having been unveiled in the second month of 2016 and released in the third month of the year. The Note 7 might have stolen the S7 edge’s crown, but ExplosiveBallOfFireGate squashed any chances it might would have had, for the time being at least.

If you’re in the market for an unlocked flagship smartphone, there simply isn’t a better option on the market right now. And the good news is that you won’t have to pay anything close to the MSRP. More →

Galaxy Note 7 Recall Samsung Explosions

The Galaxy Note 7 recall might just be the beginning for Samsung

The Galaxy Note 7 recall might just be the beginning for Samsung

The Galaxy Note 7 recall is one of Samsung’s biggest mishaps in history. But is it a signal that there might be something wrong with more of Samsung’s smartphone batteries at large? Samsung cited 35 instances of malfunctioning batteries when it officialized the Galaxy Note 7 recall almost two weeks ago.

Since then, we learned that more than 70 Galaxy Note 7 units exploded in the US alone, but that’s not all. We also saw reports of other Samsung smartphones going up in flames.

Galaxy Note 7 to have bigger battery than Note 5 but smaller than Galaxy S7 edge

The Galaxy Note 7 will be unveiled on August 2nd and hit stores in the coming weeks – reports indicate the phone might be available for preorder as soon as Samsung’s Unpacked keynote wraps up. But with a couple of weeks, until the phone become officials, we’re still pounded by a large number of Galaxy Note 7 leaks. The latest one says the phone will have a bigger battery than the Galaxy Note 5, its predecessor. But that’s not necessarily a good thing, given that the phone might have a smaller battery than the Galaxy S7 edge. More →

OnePlus vs. Galaxy S7 edge Speed Test

OnePlus 3 vs. Galaxy S7 edge speed test, round 2: What happens when 6GB of RAM is unleashed?

OnePlus 3 vs. Galaxy S7 edge speed test, round 2: What happens when 6GB of RAM is unleashed?

The OnePlus 3 might be one of the best smartphones you can buy without parting with too much cash, but it’s not necessarily the fastest one. Recent real-life speed tests showed that the OnePlus flagship lags behind the Galaxy S7 edge and the iPhone 6s even though it has an outrageous amount of RAM. The OnePlus 3 packs 6GB of RAM, compared to 4GB for the Galaxy S7 edge and 2GB for the newest iPhone.

OnePlus addressed the RAM management following these tests, saying that the phone doesn’t keep too many apps in memory to conserve battery life. That said, some intrepid hackers came up with an unofficial “fix” for the issue, prompting a second speed test comparison.
