We just got off the phone with our buddy Sean Kovacs, aka the Google Voice king of iOS, and he filled us in on the latest with his app and the development and submission process. If you aren’t aware, (please stop reading this site) Apple removed all Google Voice-related applications over a year ago when it decided that the apps “duplicated” functionality on the phone (phone app). People have been debating the real issue behind Apple’s move since then, but with the recently updated and reasonably straight forward developer guidelines now published, Sean Kovacs is deciding to try his hand again. Samsung Galaxy Tab is Verizon Wireless' tablet

Guess what we have here, folks? Confirmation that the very sexy and very unannounced Samsung tablet device for Verizon Wireless is actually Samsung’s Galaxy Tab tablet. It is currently sitting pretty in Verizon’s internal systems, and a source of ours has sent in proof. Well, now that the mystery surrounding Samsung’s tablet is out, it won’t be long until we get to the bottom of Motorola’s slab device. According to our information, it should up the stakes on Samsung’s unit by running Android 3.0 and offering more screen real estate — 10″ worth.

We have been working this one for a while, and we finally got BlackBerry OS 6 for our BlackBerry 9700. Here’s a short walkthrough video we put together. Comparing BlackBerry 6 on the 9700 to BlackBerry 6 on the 9800, we feel that the 9700 runs it better. It is less complicated to use, more functional (at least for us), and above all, faster. It even boots up in around a minute. For some reason, even though this build is not a final build, the phone feels snappy and doesn’t seem to get bogged down like our BlackBerry Torch did. All the great features of BlackBerry 6 are obviously here — WebKit browser, Universal Search, and more — and it’s nice to be able to pamper your beloved aging 9700 sometimes, isn’t it? More →

The red-headed step child of the BlackBerry device family is launching relatively soon on Sprint (and probably Verizon), and we have got our hands on a nice overview of the product in case you had any unanswered questions. Quick recap? It’s a clamshell QWERTY flip device with a CDMA radio, Wi-Fi, GPS, 5 megapixel camera, 240×320 external display, 360×400 internal display, and optical trackpad for navigation. If you loved the Pearl Flip but hated the SureType keyboard, this might be a nice compromise, though it’s going to have to sit pretty low on the price scale for it to fly.

BlackBerry Bold R020 internal overview, replaces BlackBerry Bold 9700

You’d think that RIM would be replacing highest-end product with a brand new device, right? Well, previous rumors suggested that the BlackBerry Bold 9700 would get nothing more than a simple refresh, and we’re able to confirm those rumors. We have a leaked internal document detailing all sorts of fun stuff. Market positioning, technical overviews, and a bunch more. The big picture view? The BlackBerry Bold R020 (9020? 9750? 9780? We’re just guessing) will be practically identical to the 9700 visually. Internal changes include a 5 megapixel camera sensor, and 512MB of RAM up from 256MB. It will also launch with BlackBerry 6 — obviously. We’d love to say there is more, but there isn’t, so check out the leaked document and let us know your thoughts, ok?

BlackBerry 9670 clamshell coming to Sprint soon, not a Verizon exclusive?

While we had heard that the BlackBerry 9670 — you might remember its first public appearance — was created solely for Verizon Wireless as an exclusive, that all seems to have changed. We have independently confirmed that the BlackBerry 9670 clamshell will be hitting Sprint in the next “couple months.” Additionally, multiple sources have confirmed with us that they are in possession of Sprint-branded BlackBerry 9670 devices. We are not sure on an actual launch date, but we’re thinking it can’t be too far off now that units are in the wild.

Both Verizon Wireless iPhone and next generation iPad about to hit field testing?

One of our Apple sources has just informed us of something very interesting. Way down deep within iOS 4 is a pretty intriguing block of code. Our source says that the code queries the device, and if the device is either a CDMA iPhone or iPad 2, the device will auto-activate, thus bypassing the need for iTunes. We’re told this block of code has appeared every year consecutively before a major iPhone / device release, removed right before launch. This allows the products to be field tested by carriers (or partners) without having to activate the handsets or devices. Whether Apple has done this to make sure AT&T or other carriers looking at activation logs don’t find anything, or just for the sake of simplicity isn’t clear.

Lastly, we’ve been told from a separate source that the platform code of the CDMA iPhone is N92AP (Daring Fireball’s John Gruber has said it was N92), and the platform code for the next-gen iPod touch is N81AP.

Motorola DROID Pro, World Edition and Tablet all found in Verizon Wireless systems

One of our Verizon Wireless sources has done a little digging for us, and we have turned up some awesome information. We exclusively reported that Verizon Wireless is gearing up to launch a barrage of Android handsets and devices, and we are now able to further clarify that report.

The Motorola DROID Pro, the handset with a 4″ display, 1.3GHz CPU, and global roaming capability gets the model number A957, and is set for a November launch. Motorola is also apparently working on a more business-focused version of the DROID 2 with a World Edition global roaming feature, and it looks like that device will launch relatively soon with the model number A956. If that’s not enough, it also appears that the phone will come in two color choices, black and white.

Moving on to the Motorola Android slab device — it’s listed and we’ve found the model designation — MZ600. We aren’t able to definitively confirm at this time whether this is the Motorola tablet (unlikely just yet) or just the slab form factor device we reported on (much more likely). If it’s the slab touch screen Android phone, it should launch with Android 2.2 and also be a World Edition handset. It looks like there are over 170,000 of those devices on order from what we can see.

RIM’s mythical sliding device finally got official after years and years of rumors. It’s being released tomorrow exclusively on AT&T and features the all new BlackBerry 6 operating system. We’re talking multitouch, gestures, redone multimedia applications, and a whole lot more. It packs the best camera of any BlackBerry, a touch screen, full keyboard, and even an optical trackpad to help with navigation. Not to mention it has a web browser that is actually usable, and everything is packed in a pretty tight package. One of our Verizon Wireless guys just shot us over the upcoming Motorola DROID 2′s equipment guide. Not too much new here, but it does detail an online for-sale date of August 11th with in-store availability happening on the 12th. We heard Verizon just went ahead with the DROID 2 press release in addition to confirming the above information on one of their official Twitter accounts — game on, DROIDs!

BlackBerry Torch 9800 hands on… again

Alright guys, we finally have a BlackBerry Torch 9800 in hand, before launch date, and we figured we’d do the second honors on your behalf. We have chimed in with our first-hand impressions of the new BlackBerry, but now that we have a unit in front of us again, here are a couple more quick thoughts:

  • Again, the device is really solid. Construction seems high quality, though there is obviously a “plastic” feel as opposed to something more luxurious. Like metal (aluminum, stainless steel). The rubberized back battery cover, while kind of scares me at first, feels really good when you hold the phone. It’s not overly rubbery, it is something that will probably save many Torch owners from flinging the device out of their palm while carrying it around.
  • The screen is depressing. I personally think at this point in time, there is no excuse. It instantly makes the phone not feel competitive, and doesn’t encourage you to use the phone. In fact, it makes me not even want to use the device. Not sitting next an iPhone 4 and a DROID X — no way.
  • Love the keyboard. I’m already able to bang out my 80 WPM emails (most likely ones yelling at Andrew).
  • Will reserve full thoughts on the OS and UI for our review, but the phone really does feel a bit busy as I mentioned earlier. One of BlackBerry’s strengths has been providing users with that “always connected” feel, but I really think they might have taken it too far with the BlackBerry 6 OS.

While we put together the full review, we have to ask — who’s getting one, and who’s passing?
