Research shows tweeting through text message is a surefire way to get your account hijacked [updated]

You don’t need an Internet-connected smartphone to send out a tweet. In fact, very few people know that tweets can be sent out through a text message. However, users who do tweet from their cellphones via SMS could have their accounts easily hacked. An exploit detailed by researcher Jonathan Rudenberg reveals “Twitter users with SMS enabled are vulnerable to an attack that allows anyone to post to their account” by spoofing the phone number associated with the account. Rudenberg reports that unless a PIN number is set up (not available in the U.S.) to authorize tweets, users are vulnerable. Although the exploit was reported to Twitter’s security team in August, Rudenberg says the social network still hasn’t closed the hole, despite asking him to refrain from publishing his finding. Rudenberg also said in his blog post that he found similar SMS-related exploits with Facebook (FB) and Venmo that have since been patched. More →

Toshiba’s 10-inch Excite 10 SE tablet sells for $349.99, comes with Jelly Bean

While every other company is busy chasing the 7-inch tablet marketToshiba (TOSBF) is keeping its eye on people interested in 10-inch tablets. China goes crazy for iPhone 5: Preorders hit 100,000 units in under 24 hours

China might be totally in love with Android, but that doesn’t mean its people aren’t going crazy for Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 5 that will soon be available there. China Unicom, the country’s second-largest wireless carrier told Sina Tech it’s received over 100,000 preorders in its first day of availability, with the actual product launch happening on December 14th. The iPhone 5 originally launched on September 21 in the U.S. in select countries and managed to top 2 million preorders in its first 24 hours. Flash Storage Limits

Flash memory breakthrough could lead to even more reliable data storage

Flash memory breakthrough could lead to even more reliable data storage

Although NAND flash, the storage that’s found in smartphones, tablets and many computers today, is faster than traditional platter-based hard drives, it does have its limitations as well. For starters, NAND flash storage is usually only good for about 10,000 read/write cycles before it fails. Taiwanese engineers from Macronix plan to announce at the 2012 IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting that it has figured out how to improve NAND flash storage read/write cycles from 10,000 to 100 million cycles using a “self-healing” process that uses a flash chip with “onboard heaters that could anneal small groups of memory cells.” The result is a chip that can be erased and rewritten on over and over, even when it should theoretically break down. As promising as Macronix’s breakthrough could be for the mobile industry, there are no plans for a commercial product to be released any time in the near future.

New power-efficient Intel PC chips could boost battery life for Windows 8 tablets

Intel (INTC) is reportedly planning to make significant changes to its Ivy Bridge processors that could see a new wave of powerful and battery-efficient Windows 8 tablets launch in the near future, according to a report from CNET. By lowering power consumption, PC makers could build tablets or even PC/tablet hybrids that will have batteries that last all-day as opposed to just a few hoursCNET’s report says it’s not clear when Intel plans to push out the more efficient Ivy Bridge processors and that they won’t be available this year. Intel has been criticized in the last several years for its failure to make Medfield-powered smartphones that compete with ARM’s mobile processors. It’s believed Intel’s inability to build capable chips for the mobile market is one contributing reason as to why CEO Paul Otellini is retiring in May 2013.

Is Facebook planning to develop its own games? Revised Zynga terms open the door

As Zynga (ZNGA) continues its free fall into irrelevancy with layoffs and its one-hit social games, the gaming company has revised its contract with Facebook (FB) to free it from being “forced to launch games exclusively on the Facebook platform” and “obligated to use Facebook Credits for Zynga game pages,” according to AllThingsD. The change of terms filed with the SEC also includes a clause that states “Facebook will no longer be prohibited from developing its own games” on March 31, 2013. Could Facebook start developing its own social games? Theoretically, yes. But would Facebook really jeopardize its relationships with game developers who already make games for its social network? Probably not.

Verizon Samsung Galaxy Camera Release Date

Verizon may soon launch Samsung Galaxy Camera with 4G LTE

Verizon may soon launch Samsung Galaxy Camera with 4G LTE

Samsung’s (005930) ingenious idea to cram Android Jelly Bean into a camera with a 21x optical zoom, 4.8-inch screen and with cellular connectivity is nothing short of impressive. The only bone we have to pick with the Galaxy Camera is that it’s only available on AT&T (T) in the U.S. and it only supports HSPA+ instead of faster 4G LTE networks. A newly discovered FCC filing indicates Verizon (VZ) is already testing a variant of the Galaxy Camera on its 700MHz band that does have 4G LTE, however. Verizon and Samsung haven’t made any official announcements yet, but it’s likely that battery life for the Galaxy Camera will take a hit with LTE turned on. If you’ve had your eye on the Galaxy Camera but can’t live without LTE, it might be best to hold out just a little longer — Verizon’s pricing for the Galaxy Camera will likely be similar to the $499.99 AT&T is selling it for.

Apple iMac Late-2012 Teardown

First Apple iMac teardown reveals Apple’s mastery of component shrinkage

First Apple iMac teardown reveals Apple’s mastery of component shrinkage

Now that Apple’s (AAPL) redesigned iMac is available for purchase, the only logical thing to do is to pull out the suction cups and take the svelte computer apart. Japanese site Kodawarisan took the first shot at opening the new iMacs up and as expected, found the 21.5-inch model to be very light and very thin. One of the reasons why the new iMacs are so thin is because they don’t have optical drives anymore. Another reason discovered by Kodawarisan appears to be the simplified internal design of the iMac’s components. As can be seen in the teardown photos, the new iMacs have fewer serviceable parts thanks to more components such as the RAM being soldered in now. Even with a bulge on the back that tapers to a 5-millimeter thickness at the edges, the new iMac still has room to get even thinner if the teardown images are any indication. A few more teardown images follow below. More →

Nintendo president apologizes for bulky day-one Wii U firmware update

As we noted in our first impressions, Nintendo’s (NTDOY) Wii U is charting new ground with its wireless GamePad and touchscreen controls that engage gamers in the living room like never before. But before you can even set up the Wii U, a mandatory firmware update is required upon power up. Gamers everywhere were frustrated to learn that the firmware update, which is pegged anywhere between 1GB and 5GB, takes hours to download and could even ”brick” new consoles if the power was cut off. In an email conversation with IGN, Nintendo’s global president and CEO Satoru Iwata said was “very sorry” that Wii U owners were experiencing network issues and that other services such as Nintendo TVii weren’t available at launch. Iwata said he believes “users should be able to use all the functions of a console video game machine as soon as they open the box.”  More →

Future iPhones could have true wireless charging with no station required

Future iPhones could have true wireless charging with no station required

Wireless charging is set to take off this year with the likes of  HTC’s (2498) Windows Phone 8XNokia’s (NOK) Lumia 920 and 820 and Google’s (GOOG) Nexus 4. By comparison, Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 5 feels decidedly last-gen without wireless charging or NFC. Apple’s reason for omitting wireless charging is that smartphones still need charging stations/plates plugged into the wall to work. A new Apple patent discovered by AppleInsider suggests the company is investigating a more elegant solution – wireless charging that uses “near-field magnetic resonance” to recharge an iPhone’s battery. The patent details a “virtual charging area” about one meter wide that can be used to provide electricity to devices simply by stepping within a certain radius of a power source. The patent calls the idea a “realistic and practical approach to wireless transferring.”

Microsoft trolls anti-Internet Explorer trolls in new IE10 ad [video]

Having lost its spot for having the world’s most popular Internet browser, Microsoft’s (MSFT) Internet Explorer is now clawing its way back up as Google’s (GOOG) Chrome continues become the browser of choice. In a rather risky move, Microsoft has launched a new video ad featuring an online troll who goes on a rampage attacking Internet Explorer for its dated compatibility. In the words of the online troll “IE SUCKS!!! 4evUR! Srsly!” Microsoft’s admission that previous versions of Internet Explorer have been lackluster is a step in the right direction if it’s to regain lost market share with Internet Explorer 10. The ad doesn’t tout IE 10 as the best browser available, but shows humility; that Microsoft is aware of its past mistakes and is working on improving IE so that it “sucks less.” Microsoft’s IE 10 ad follows below.
