Solid source details Apple’s next-gen iPad Air and Retina iPad mini

Despite the fact that we have seen nothing new from Apple through the first two and a half months of 2014, the company reportedly has a huge year planned that will include the launches of a number of new products beginning late in the second quarter. The third quarter is apparently when the action will really start though, and a new report from one of the most reputable sources in the business seemingly reveals key details about Apple’s next-generation iPad Air and iPad mini tablets. These are the thinnest and lightest tablets in the world

The advent of media tablets has been a fantastic development for consumers ,who now have a great inexpensive option for mobile devices with big displays. It has also added a nice additional source of revenue for many top consumer electronics companies. Tablets are still stuck in an awkward place for most users, however, since they can’t really replace a laptop computer or a cell phone. As such, these mobile devices had better be as light and portable as possible if we’re going to carry them with us and not leave anything else behind.

With that in mind, CNET has compiled a nice little list of the thinnest and lightest tablets in the world. More →

Apple’s iPhones look great and iPads feel amazing, but are they really high-quality devices?

Apple’s iPhones look great and iPads feel amazing, but are they really high-quality devices?

It’s a simple truth: no other mass-market consumer electronics devices on the planet look and feel like Apple’s iPhone handsets and iPad tablets. The company’s designs are gorgeous, the materials it uses are a cut above the rest, and the end results are devices that are sleeker than anything the competition has managed to come up with. Apple gadgets undoubtedly look and feel more premium than anything the competition has come up with, but are they really sturdier and built with more care than rival phones and tablets? More →

iPad Air and Retina iPad mini are both hot sellers

iPad Air and Retina iPad mini are both hot sellers

New research from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) shows that the iPad Air and the Retina iPad mini accounted for 57% of the total number of iPads sold in the U.S. during the holiday quarter, eclipsing other iPad models available from Apple. The iPad Air and Retina iPad mini, which launched only on November 1st, accounted for 41% and 16% of total iPad sales, respectively. The fourth-generation iPad that was available in stores until the iPad Air was launched accounted for 13% of sales, while first-generation iPad mini sales made up 25%. Only 5% of sales were iPad 2 units, a number significantly lower than the 27% registered in the December quarter back in 2012. More →

Retina iPad mini sales looks set to explode in Q1

Apple finally added a Retina display to its popular iPad mini tablet this past November, but severely constrained supply may have left a substantial number of consumers Retinaless this holiday season. According to a new report from Digitimes, however, there will be more than enough to go around next quarter. The site points to data from its own research arm in stating that Apple’s iPad lineup was the best-selling tablet line in the world heading into the holidays, thanks in large part to aggressive Black Friday promotions from a number of retailers. The iPad mini with Retina display, however, wasn’t even available from some retailers. According to Digitimes, any manufacturing issues Apple’s partners were having appear to have been resolved and iPad mini with Retina display shipments are expected to reach between 5 million and 6 million in Q1 2014. The site’s sources believe demand from Asia will heat up during the Lunar New Year holiday and pent-up demand elsewhere will also likely see Apple continue to sell the new iPad mini as quickly as its partners can build it.

Santa may have a Retina iPad mini for you after all

Santa may have an easier time finding the Retina iPad mini in stores this Christmas than initially anticipated, as Apple’s online store has dropped shipping times down to 1 to 3 business days from the earlier 3 to 5 business days estimate, MacRumors reports. The shipping estimate is the same for any Retina iPad mini chosen from the store, regardless of color, connectivity or storage options. Retina iPad mini: The best tablet you can buy, but do you really need one?

Retina iPad mini: The best tablet you can buy, but do you really need one?

Listen, I don’t have the greatest history when it comes to tablet relationships. We have… a checkered past. I was pitched on this fabled third device long ago, but I can’t help but feel that we’ve all been hoodwinked. I’ve found myself maximally productivity on a flash-based laptop, and on the go, with a phone at least keeps me in the game. I’ve been struggling to figure out how a tablet fits into such a workflow for years, and after living for a while without one, I talked myself into giving the whole thing another whirl. More →

iPad Air Mini Sales Japan

Over half of the top 10 tablets in Japan are iPads

Over half of the top 10 tablets in Japan are iPads

There are certain markets around the world where Apple has to compete fiercely with other vendors to retain its position near the top of the heap but Japan does not appear to be one of them. According to Japanese consumer electronics tracking company BCN, iPads currently account for 6 of the top 10 best-selling tablets in Japan. Assorted versions of the iPad Air have reached the No. 1, 5, 9 and 10 sports, while different versions of the iPad mini occupy No. 2 and 8. The ASUS Nexus 7 holds the other four slots. These results aren’t quite as overwhelmingly dominant as Japan’s iPhone sales figures, which puts Apple’s smartphone in 9 of the top 10 slots, but the iPad is unquestionably the most wanted tablet in Japan. Now that Apple’s supply of new devices has started to meet demand, expect a huge holiday season for the pride of Cupertino worldwide.

Walmart reports hot Black Friday tablet sales led by iPad mini

Walmart on Friday announced that its 2013 Black Friday campaign has been a smashing success, with the store delivering “the biggest shopping day of the season,” even though not all its online customers were happy after Walmart’s website experienced some snafus. The retail store revealed that over 1 million customers took advantage of the One-Hour Guarantee promotion offered on 21 products this year, while the company said it processed more than 10 million transactions on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., and its website registered nearly 400 million page views on Thanksgiving Day. In total, more than 22 million customers did their Black Friday shopping at Walmart. More →

Display expert slams Retina iPad mini, says Apple is ‘lagging’ behind

Apple’s decision to give the iPad mini a Retina display is certainly an improvement from the original device’s display but at least one display expert thinks it’s still “lagging” behind both the Google Nexus 7 and the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX. DisplayMate president Raymond Soneira this week knocks Apple for supposed “poor planning” when it comes to the Retina iPad mini’s display, which he says uses outdated technology that has been easily surpassed by its competitors.
