New leak may be our first look at the next-gen iPad mini

The biggest two items on Apple’s fall release schedule are going to be the iPhone 6 and the yet-to-be-seen iWatch, but we shouldn’t forget that the company’s popular tablets are due to get new models as well. MacRumors directs our attention to a new picture published at Taiwanese website Apple.club.tw that shows a mockup of the iPhone 6 sitting on top of what appears to be the next-generation iPad mini and the next-generation iPad Air. MacRumors notes that we really can’t tell very much about the new iPad mini from the leaked picture although it does seemingly show that Apple’s newest mini tablet will indeed have the Touch ID fingerprint scanning system that was first unveiled with the iPhone 5s. Crazy 4-inch iPhone that unfolds into an iPad mini reportedly being tested

Apple may be working on a few wild prototypes, Jefferies analyst Peter Misek wrote in a research note to investors, including a 4-inch OLED iPhone that transforms into an iPad mini. Apparently, Misek got wind of various Apple prototypes from Asian suppliers, although MacRumors suggests the company might keep such prototypes close to the chest, producing them in-house or in very small quantities by certain partners. These are the thinnest and lightest tablets in the world

The advent of media tablets has been a fantastic development for consumers ,who now have a great inexpensive option for mobile devices with big displays. It has also added a nice additional source of revenue for many top consumer electronics companies. Tablets are still stuck in an awkward place for most users, however, since they can’t really replace a laptop computer or a cell phone. As such, these mobile devices had better be as light and portable as possible if we’re going to carry them with us and not leave anything else behind.

With that in mind, CNET has compiled a nice little list of the thinnest and lightest tablets in the world. More →

Apple’s iPhones look great and iPads feel amazing, but are they really high-quality devices?

By on February 12, 2014 at 11:54 AM.

Apple’s iPhones look great and iPads feel amazing, but are they really high-quality devices?

It’s a simple truth: no other mass-market consumer electronics devices on the planet look and feel like Apple’s iPhone handsets and iPad tablets. The company’s designs are gorgeous, the materials it uses are a cut above the rest, and the end results are devices that are sleeker than anything the competition has managed to come up with. Apple gadgets undoubtedly look and feel more premium than anything the competition has come up with, but are they really sturdier and built with more care than rival phones and tablets? More →

iPad Air and Retina iPad mini are both hot sellers

iPad Air and Retina iPad mini are both hot sellers

New research from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) shows that the iPad Air and the Retina iPad mini accounted for 57% of the total number of iPads sold in the U.S. during the holiday quarter, eclipsing other iPad models available from Apple. The iPad Air and Retina iPad mini, which launched only on November 1st, accounted for 41% and 16% of total iPad sales, respectively. The fourth-generation iPad that was available in stores until the iPad Air was launched accounted for 13% of sales, while first-generation iPad mini sales made up 25%. Only 5% of sales were iPad 2 units, a number significantly lower than the 27% registered in the December quarter back in 2012. More →

Retina iPad mini sales looks set to explode in Q1

Apple finally added a Retina display to its popular iPad mini tablet this past November, but severely constrained supply may have left a substantial number of consumers Retinaless this holiday season. According to a new report from Digitimes, however, there will be more than enough to go around next quarter. The site points to data from its own research arm in stating that Apple’s iPad lineup was the best-selling tablet line in the world heading into the holidays, thanks in large part to aggressive Black Friday promotions from a number of retailers. The iPad mini with Retina display, however, wasn’t even available from some retailers. According to Digitimes, any manufacturing issues Apple’s partners were having appear to have been resolved and iPad mini with Retina display shipments are expected to reach between 5 million and 6 million in Q1 2014. The site’s sources believe demand from Asia will heat up during the Lunar New Year holiday and pent-up demand elsewhere will also likely see Apple continue to sell the new iPad mini as quickly as its partners can build it.

Retina iPad mini: The best tablet you can buy, but do you really need one?

Retina iPad mini: The best tablet you can buy, but do you really need one?

Listen, I don’t have the greatest history when it comes to tablet relationships. We have… a checkered past. I was pitched on this fabled third device long ago, but I can’t help but feel that we’ve all been hoodwinked. I’ve found myself maximally productivity on a flash-based laptop, and on the go, with a phone at least keeps me in the game. I’ve been struggling to figure out how a tablet fits into such a workflow for years, and after living for a while without one, I talked myself into giving the whole thing another whirl. More →
