I wouldn’t go so far as to call the first season of Netflix’s Master of None a breakout or surprise hit. After all, Aziz Ansari had already showed off his writing chops on any number of stand-up specials, not to mention the extremely underrated MTV sketch show Human Giant. Still, I don’t think anyone was expecting Master of None to be as good as it was. Equal parts funny and insightful, the show drew incredibly high praise from critics and viewers alike.
As for the motivation behind the show’s creation, Ansari said that he couldn’t rely on Hollywood to deliver a similar type of script or allow him the creative freedom that Netflix gave him.
“Look, if you’re a minority actor, no one would have wrote this show for you,” Aziz said . “No one would have been like, Hey, how about we get Aziz to do this ten-episode show and have play this thoughtful character. At best, they would just write something that’s a character based on the qualities people have seen already, like Tom [Haverford].”
At the end of season 1, we saw Ansari’s character Dev jetting off to Europe. Now, with season 2 set to launch next month, Netflix earlier today released the first trailer for season 2. The season 2 description reads: “After traveling abroad, Dev returns to New York to take on challenges in his personal and family life, a new career opportunity, and a complex, developing relationship with someone very meaningful to him.”
That’s rather vague, but the trailer below does sport some eye-popping visuals. The season 2 premiere is slated to air on May 12.
