Video game movies almost never work. Whether it’s Super Mario Bros., Doom or even Warcraft, filmmakers are rarely able to translate the interactive journeys that players experience into a linear, two-hour story. So what’s the key to making a successful film series based on a video game franchise?

For Sony Pictures Entertainment, the answer is simple: have a nearly invincible character murder everyone in her path while on the run from zombies.

No one is going to claim that the Resident Evil film series is fine art, but somehow, 15 years later, we’re getting yet another sequel. You can watch the ridiculous, action-packed, zombie-filled trailer for The Final Chapter below:

“Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, Alice (Milla Jovovich) is the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead. Now, she must return to where the nightmare began – The Hive in Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.”

This series has “ended” more than once, but with a title like The Final Chapter, the studio certainly seems to be making a statement about the status of Resident Evil going forward. That’s not to say that we couldn’t get a new series with a new hero in the future, but this is probably the end of Alice’s story.
