A report emerged last week from a source with a mixed track record stating that Apple’s upcoming new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will do away with the Space Gray color we know and love. In its place, the rumor said Apple’s next-generation iPhones will come in a brand new “Deep Blue” color.

Now, this report seems absolutely ridiculous on its surface. Space Gray is one of the most popular color choices for Apple’s iPhone lineup. It’s nice and sleek when paired with the phone’s black face plate, but it’s also neutral so it’s perfect for people who don’t want a flashy phone. On the other hand, a blue iPhone could be polarizing. If it replaces Space Gray, that could leave many iPhone fans without any choice if they want a dark iPhone, right?

Before you start to panic, take a look at the picture below.

When most people hear “Deep Blue,” they think of a dark navy blue. That’s also what one of our favorite graphic designers Martin Hajek envisioned when he created a series of mockups that show what an iPhone 7 might look like in a dark navy blue color.

Here’s one image from Hajek’s collection:

You can see more images of Hajek’s blue iPhone 7 in this post. Many people would love it, but it looks nothing like what Apple would create if it does indeed release a blue iPhone. For that, we turn to Reddit user “p_giguere1,” who created a simple mockup in a Reddit thread that shows what a Deep Blue iPhone would actually look like.

Here it is (click to enlarge):

That’s an iPhone 6s that the Redditor edited so it has a nice subtle blue tint. If Apple does release a “Deep Blue” iPhone 7, we would bet the bank that it ends up looking almost exactly like that. It’ll be a nice dark gray with a subtle blue tint, definitely not a matte dark blue like the phone we saw in Hajek’s renders.

Of note, there’s no way that Apple would release a phone with plastic antenna lines that are the color shown above. Expect something far less offensive if the rumored Deep Blue iPhone 7 becomes a reality.
