After unveiling the new multiplatform Nintendo Account system last October, Nintendo has opened up registration for users this week. In order to create an account, users can head to the new Nintendo Account landing page and sign up using their Nintendo Network ID as well as Facebook, Twitter and Google+ accounts.

The Nintendo Account won’t be fully implemented into Nintendo’s hardware and software until later in the year, but creating an account will allow users to preregister for Miitomo, the company’s first smartphone game/communication app.

Once you’ve created a Nintendo Account, you can sign up for the app at Miitomo.com to be among the first notified when the app launches in March. Those who preregister will also receive Platinum Points for the My Nintendo rewards program launching alongside Miitomo, which is taking the place of the now defunct Club Nintendo.

Miitomo will allow users to make a custom Mii — the characters that debuted on the Wii — by either choosing from a library of facial features or simply taking a picture of their face with the smartphone camera. Once the Mii has been created, it will ask you and other users questions in order to get to know you better.

The app will also allow users to customize their Mii creations with costumes and clothes. These are acquired by spending Miitomo coins, which can be earned by playing or by spending actual money.

The app doesn’t have a release date yet, but preregistration will only last until the app launches — so if you want your Platinum Points, act fast.
