The iPhone 6s might not be the most impressive iPhone upgrade of all time, but 3D Touch is certainly one of the most intriguing additions to ever appear on an Apple device. Reviews on Tuesday pegged it as a revolutionary feature that will change the way we interact with our phones, but what does it actually do?

Having gotten their hands on the iPhone 6s ahead of time, The Verge had the opportunity to discover everything that 3D Touch is going to be capable of when the new phones launch this Friday:

  • Peek and Pop: Unfortunately named though it may be, the ability to “peek” into an email or a webpage without opening it and then “pop” in if you want to send a reply or read more is one of the biggest perks of 3D Touch. The less we have to use the back button, the better off we’ll be.
  • Access Multitasking View: In case you can’t be bothered to double tap the home button, 3D Touch allows you to swipe from the left of the screen while applying pressure to open the multitasking view.
  • Trackpad Keyboard: Look, the stock iPhone keyboard isn’t perfect, but it’s slowly getting better. By pressing down on the keyboard in certain apps, you can turn it into a trackpad in order to more easily select and manipulate text.
  • Live Photos: Tap and hold photos to see then in motion with Live Photos.

These are all the ways you’ll be utilizing 3D Touch over the weekend, but in the coming weeks and months, third-party developers are sure to find fun and interesting ways to implement the technology into their own apps.
