Google is widely expected to launch two new Nexus handsets this year, including a 5-inch LG Nexus 5 (2015 edition) and a Huawei phablet. Fans of the Nexus line probably expect the phones to launch at some point in the fourth quarter of the year, which is when Google usually releases new Nexus smartphones. But it looks like at least one new Nexus handset might hit store shelves sooner than you think.

The news comes from Geek Snack, which has a source that claims the “joint launch of the new Nexus and Android M is a sure thing.” Additional details about the device were not provided.

Naturally, the idea that a new Nexus handset might launch around the same time that a brand new Android update is ready for commercial rollout wouldn’t be a surprise. However, Android M might be released earlier than previous versions. Instead of a Q4 launch, Android M could be made available to users at some point in the third quarter.

Google recently revealed that it’ll offer developers three preview releases before the final Android M build, with Preview 3 set to be released in late July. With that in mind, the final Android M version could certainly be released by the end of Q3. Assuming Geek Snack’s source is correct, the new Nexus 5 might also start selling around the same time.
