Stephen Hawking is incredibly cool for a whole host of reasons and one of them is his terrific sense of humor. During an appearance at the Sydney Opera House over the weekend, the legendary physicist was asked what his advice would be for any young fans who are still heartbroken because Zayn Malik had left the boy band One Direction last month. Hawking not only delivered a funny and empathetic response but he even found a way to tie it into his primary field of study as well.

“My advice to any heartbroken young girl is to pay close attention to the study of theoretical physics,” Hawking said. “Because one day there may well be proof of multiple universes. It would not be beyond the realms of possibility that somewhere outside of our own universe lies another different universe. And in that universe, Zayn is still in One Direction.”

Of course, the hypothesis that there are multiple universes that exist parallel to ours is supported by big-name physicists such as Hawking and Neil deGrasse Tyson, so Hawking isn’t just being cute here: There may actually be universes where Zayn is still in One Direction or (even better) where One Direction never came into existence at all.
