Just a few short months after its launch, Apple Pay is by far the most widely used mobile payment service on the market. It takes a certain kind of brand to turn grocery shopping into an event, but that’s what Apple is trying to do with Apple Pay. Unfortunately, not all users see it that way.

Business Insider shared a recent study by research firm Phoenix Marketing in which many of the consumers who have attempted to use Apple Pay have reported less than satisfactory experiences.

“The demand is there: 59% of Apple Pay users have gone into a store and asked to make a purchase with Apple Pay,” researcher Greg Weed writes. “But so is the disappointment: 47% visited a store that was listed as an Apple Pay merchant only to find out that the specific store they visited did not accept (or were not ready to accept) Apple Pay.”

And those are just the people who have tried and failed to use Apple Pay. There are even more complaints from those who found stores that were using the service.

“Two-out-of-three Apple Pay users have reported a problem at checkout,” wrote Phoenix researcher Leon Majors. “Mostly related to terminals not working or taking too long to make the transaction, inaccurate posting of transactions and the inability of cashiers to help buyers who needed assistance in using Apple Pay.”

Maybe Apple Pay isn’t quite ready for primetime.
