Anxious to get that full Start menu back? Well, you may have a while to wait for that but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other good Windows 8.1 updates coming in the near future. Neowin’s sources say that the next major update to Windows 8.1, which will likely be called Windows 8.1 Update 2, is likely coming in either August or September. This lines up with earlier reports we’ve read about the next major Windows update coming in late summer, although it seems that Microsoft has now scrapped its original plans to bring back the Start menu with the next release.

Instead, Start menu fans will have to wait until 2015 when Microsoft takes the wraps off Windows 9, which Neowin’s sources say is still a long way from being finished, although it’s still on track to be ready for its projected release date of April next year. Earlier rumors have suggested that Microsoft will make Windows 9 available as a free upgrade for anyone who already has Windows 8.1, which would make it much more like a major update than a completely new operating system.
