Hide your wallets: Steam’s Summer Sale has begun

Steam Summer Sale 2014

PC gamers rejoice! It’s that time of the year again — the Steam Summer Sale is upon us, and no one’s bank account is safe. The Summer Sale is famously (or maybe infamously) known as the best time to pick up any of the hit games you missed out on over the past year for unthinkably low prices. Discounts for recently released games start between 15%-25%, but older titles have been discounted up to 80%.

Some of the day one highlights include Far Cry 3, XCOM: Enemy Unknown and The Witcher 2, but be sure to watch out for flash sales, which are typically more heavily discounted than the daily deals.

Along with daily deals and flash sales, Steam users have also traditionally been given the option to vote for one of three games in the Community’s Choice sale. This year, voters will choose between two sets of games rather than individual titles. The first two sets to duke it out are action RPGs and indie games with great soundtracks.

As if the discounts weren’t enough, Valve has also themed the sale as a battle between five teams. Any purchase you make or sale you vote on will count toward your card collection for the Summer Adventure. Spend $10? Get a card. Vote three times? Get a card. Once you’ve collected all 10 cards, you’ll be able to craft the Summer Adventure Badge, which entitles you to the following rewards:

  • 1 in-game item (or 5 for the foil badge)
  • 1 emoticon
  • 1 profile background
  • a chance at a Team Token
  • 10 points (or 100 for the foil badge)

Those points will be distributed to your team, and at the end of every day, 30 players from the winning team will receive three free games from their wishlists. The sale is scheduled to last from June 19th – 30th so if you haven’t already, log on to Steam, join a team and start deciding how much you can feasible spend on discounted video games without being forced to declare bankruptcy.
