The single biggest thing Microsoft needs to fix with the next Surface Pro

Microsoft Surface Pro 3 Kickstand

Microsoft has been pitching its Surface Pro 3 as “the first tablet that can replace your laptop” and early reviews of the device have generally been very positive about how well the device works both as a laptop and a tablet. However, Business Insider’s review of the Surface Pro 3 makes clear that Microsoft still has some work to do with the device’s kickstand setup to truly make it as comfortable to hold in your lap as a MacBook Air or an Windows ultrabook.

To illustrate the difficulties that the Surface Pro 3 still presents for people who put it in their laps, Business Insider has posted the following gif that shows what happens when you try to cross your legs while the Surface Pro 3 is on top of them:

As you can see, it just really doesn’t work right now, which isn’t really a knock on Microsoft because trying to reconcile a tablet form factor with a laptop form factor is something that hasn’t been done completely successfully yet.

We expect Microsoft will continue to tinker with this design to make it more lap-friendly over the coming year, but looking at this gif has also made us wonder: If Microsoft wants to design something to replace our old laptops, why not try its hand at designing its own touchscreen-equipped ultrabook as well?
