Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8.1 mobile operating system will soon offer support for even better hardware, NokiaPowerUser suggests, as evidence in Windows Phone 8.1 GDR 2 apparently indicates that 2K displays and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805 chip may be found inside future high-end handsets. Thus, future Lumia handsets and other Windows Phones may offer the same set of specs expected from upcoming Android flagship handsets.

The publication says that Windows Phone 8.1 currently supports two additional resolutions, including qHD (960 x 540) and FWVGA (854 x 480). When it comes to processors, the software update supports CPUs up to Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processors.

It appears that Windows Phone 8.1 handsets sporting 2K or QHD displays (2560 x 1440) are already in testing, according to recently spotted benchmark results, although it’s not clear when such devices will be launched, or when Microsoft will release the GDR2 update.

As for Android devices, the LG G3 is rumored to sport a 2K display later this year, with Samsung also said to be working on a Galaxy S5 version with a high-resolution display. Existing Android flagship devices already pack the faster and more energy-efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, with Qualcomm having already announced its next-gen flagship Snapdragon CPUs that will bring 64-bit support and even better performance to 2015 high-end handsets.

Windows Phone 8.1 is currently available to developers, and will compatible with all Windows Phone 8.0 devices in the future.
