Here’s one way the upcoming ‘Galaxy S5 killer’ will follow Samsung’s lead

LG G3 Waterproof and Dustproof

Expected to be one of the main Galaxy S5 competitors (it was even referred to as a “Galaxy S5 killer) alongside the Xperia Z2 and new HTC One model, the LG G3 is apparently going to be waterproof and dustproof, according to ETnews‘ sources. However, it’s not clear what certification the device will have, assuming the report is accurate.

Comparatively, the Galaxy S5 has an IP67 certification, which means it can offer “complete protection against contact (dust tight)” and it can resist immersions in water of up to 1m. As for the Xperia Z2, the phone has IP55 and IP58 certifications, which means it’s dust protected, and can resist water jets and water submersions of up to 3m.

Made popular by Sony’s Xperia Z handset in early 2013 – and by following Sony Android devices – waterproof and dustproof features that were characteristic to rugged handsets in the past appear to be an important differentiator for flagship devices this year.

On top of ETnews’ report, a recent tweet from well-known @evleaks may reveal another G3 detail, the model number of the unreleased smartphone. “LGD850 coming to AT&T,” he wrote on Twitter adding that “D800 was G2, D820 was Nexus 5 and D830 was G Pro 2.” However, the leaker did not say when this unannounced phone would be launched on AT&T, or whether it’s indeed the G3. Recent reports have suggested that LG may be pushing forward the G3’s launch in order to better compete against the Galaxy S5, also launched earlier than anticipated.

LG has recently unveiled the G Pro 2, a new phablet meant to take on the Galaxy Note and other extra-large smartphones.
