New report raises questions about Apple’s iPhone 5c strategy

The reaction to the iPhone 5c was one of confusion. Rather than capitalizing on the potential for a budget iPhone, Apple released a marginally more affordable, repackaged iPhone 5. The phone’s sales seem to mirror that initial response as AllThingsD shares a report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) which shows iPhone 5s sales have more than doubled sales of the iPhone 5c so far. According to CIRP’s survery, the iPhone 5s made up 64% of iPhone sales in the month of September, the iPhone 5c captured 27%, and the iPhone 4S came in at 9%.

AllThingsD notes that although it launched at the same price, the iPhone 5c is barely outperforming the iPhone 4S once its price was lowered following the release of the iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 also had a bigger share of iPhone sales when it launched, but at that point there was only one new phone available from Apple.

CIRP co-founder Josh Lowitz believes that although the handset’s debut-month sales performance might be lacking, “the 5c will account for a higher percent of total U.S. iPhone sales in the coming months.”
